Water table depth modulates productivity and biomass across Amazonian forests.
Water availability is the major driver of tropical forest structure and dynamics. Most research has focused on the impacts of climatic water availability, whereas remarkably little is known about the influence of water table depth and excess soil water on forest processes. Nevertheless, given that plants take up water from the soil, the impacts of climatic water supply on plants are likely to be modulated by soil water conditio
Inheritance of seed size in watermelon populations.
Seed sizeis an important agronomic trait and is applicable todifferent abilities. Small seeds guarantee the greater use of the pulp, while larger seeds facilitate sowing. However, there is little work on the genetic control of this characteristicin watermelon. The objective of this work was to study the seed size inheritance in watermelon populations by crossing contrasting genotypes, seeking to gain information to provide technical support during the selection of seed size for the development of new watermelon genotypes. The seed lengths of six populations, P1, P2, F1,F2,BC1and BC2, were measured using the GENES software segregating and nonsegregating generations procedure. This trait is controlled by two genes with incomplete dominance. In addition, depending on the populations studied, inheritance for the characteristicin question may behave differently. Nevertheless, the selection of superior individuals within populations can be performed based on this phenotype, which allows the exploitation of these individuals within breeding programs to develop lines or hybrids
Political Accidents in Zimbabwe
On 16 August 2011 Zimbabwe awoke to the news that retired General Solomon Mujuru, aka Rex Nhongo (his war alias), the former deputy commander of ZANLA (Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army) and independent Zimbabwe’s first black army commander, husband of the (then) vice-president, Joice Mujuru, longterm confidante of (then) president Robert Mugabe, and widely regarded as ‘kingmaker’ with the Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (ZANU PF), had died in a mysterious fire at his farm in Beatrice, 60 km south west of Harare. Just four days later, on 20 August, amid public statements of grief from across the political spectrum, and growing speculation about the cause of his death, Mujuru’s remains were buried at the National Heroes Acre in Harare at a huge state funeral attended by tens of thousands of people. After the ‘inexplicable, horrendous fire accident’ – as Mugabe then described it – there was only a ‘small pile of charred bones and ash’ to be buried, and workers reportedly needed ‘shovels to scrape his remains off the floor’. ‘Burnt beyond recognition’, unconfirmed reports suggested dental records were needed to confirm his identity; and (unusually for state funerals in Zimbabwe) the ‘coffin remained sealed’. Nevertheless, the closed casket did little to contain the plethora of rumours that emerged in the months that followed, which remain unresolved, despite police investigations and an official inquest
Antibacterial, cytotoxic and healing activity in vitro of endophytic fungi isolated from medicinal plants: Mimosa Tenuiflora (Willd.) Poir., Poincianella Pyramidalis Tul. and Acrocomia Aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd. Ex Mart.
Endophytic microorganisms inhabit the interior of plant tissues and live in mutuality with the host plant, and represent a rich and little studied source of new biologically active natural compounds. The present study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial, cytotoxic and healing activities of endophytic fungi isolated from the plant species Acrocomia aculeata, Poincianella pyramidalis and Mimosa tenuiflora. It was a basic in vitro experimental research with a quantitative approach. Initially, the fungi isolates were evaluated in culture and microscopy, and the extracts were obtained from three endophytic fungi Penicillium sp. (isolated from Poincianella pyramidalis), Rhizoctonia sp. (Mimosa tenuiflora isolate) and a fungi isolated from Acrocomia aculeata that was not identified. Minimal Inhibitory Concentration of extracts against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria was determined by the Broth Microdilution Method, in addition to cytotoxic activity by Methyltetrazolium (MTT) colorimetric method with J774 macrophages and 3T3 fibroblasts and in vitro healing activity of Scratch Assay. In the antibacterial assay, extracts of Penicillium sp. and Rhizoctonia sp. showed no activity against the bacteria tested, while the extract of the fungus isolated from A. aculeata presented antibacterial activity against S. epidermidis and S. aureus. Regarding cytotoxic activity, the extracts tested were nontoxic at all concentrations in front of J774 macrophages, but in 3T3 fibroblasts Penicillium sp. and unidentified fungus isolated from A. aculeata were toxic at concentrations of 100 and 50 μg/mL, Rhizoctonia sp. showed no toxicity at any of the concentrations tested. As for in vitro healing activity, the extracts presented positive healing activity with a migration rate similar to the control. It was concluded that medicinal plants A. aculeata, P. pyramidalis and M. tenuiflora, harbor endophytic fungi with different pharmacological potentials, are Penicillium sp., Rhizoctonia sp. and an unidentified fungus isolated from A. aculeata, which requires the application of molecular techniques for its identification, and the latter has activity against S. epidermidis and S. aureus, as well as in vitro healing activity. The data obtained encourage further studies to determine the substances that contribute to evidenced activities in the present study, aiming at a possible therapeutic application.
Multiple roles of motor imagery during action observation
Over the last 20 years, the topics of action observation (AO) and motor imagery (MI) have been largely studied in isolation from each other, despite the early integrative account by Jeannerod (1994, 2001). Recent neuroimaging studies demonstrate enhanced cortical activity when AO and MI are performed concurrently (“AO+MI”), compared to either AO or MI performed in isolation. These results indicate the potentially beneficial effects of AO+MI, and they also demonstrate that the underlying neurocognitive processes are partly shared. We separately review the evidence for MI and AO as forms of motor simulation, and present two quantitative literature analyses that indeed indicate rather little overlap between the two bodies of research. We then propose a spectrum of concurrent AO+MI states, from congruent AO+MI where the contents of AO and MI widely overlap, over coordinative AO+MI, where observed and imagined action are different but can be coordinated with each other, to cases of conflicting AO+MI. We believe that an integrative account of AO and MI is theoretically attractive, that it should generate novel experimental approaches, and that it can also stimulate a wide range of applications in sport, occupational therapy, and neurorehabilitation
Agronomic characteristics and post-harvest longevity of ornamental sunflower inflorescences
O cultivar S. Supreme mostrou a maior longevidade pós-colheita (15,9 dias), seguido do Sunbright (14,35 dias) e V. Choice (11,8 dias). In recent years the demand for cut ornamental sunflower has increased but little information is available on the cultivation and post harvesting of its inflorescences, whose longevity is variable and dependent on the cultivar. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate agronomic characteristics of three ornamental sunflower cultivars and the efficiency of the use of preservative solutions on the longevity of ornamental sunflower flower stems. Sunbright, Sunbright Supreme and Vincents Choice hybrids were used for the experiments. The first experiment realized in randomized block design, consisted of the evaluation of agronomic characteristics of the three sunflower cultivars. The second experiment realized in completely randomized design, consisted of using different sucrose concentrations (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12%) to evaluate their effect on the postharvest longevity of the three cultivars. The third experiment realized in completely randomized design, consisted in evaluating different preservative solutions (Control, Flower® 2 mL L -1 , Crystal Clear® 10 g L -1 , Aluminum Sulphate 0.5 g L -1 , Gibberellic Acid (GA 3 ) 20 mg L -1 and Sodium Hypochlorite 100 mg L -1 ) on postharvest longevity of cultivars, using a ornamental sunflower senescence scale. The lowest cultivation cycle (53 days) and larger stem (12.8 mm) and inflorescence (13 cm) diameters were observed on V. Choice cultivar. Sunbright presented higher fresh and dry mass production. Sucrose doses were not efficient at increasing the postharvest longevity of the three ornamental sunflower cultivars. S. Supreme cultivar showed the highest postharvest longevity (15.9 days), followed by Sunbright (14.35 days) and V. Choice (11.8 days). Preservative solutions significantly affected longevity of V. Choice floral stems with a 3.5-day-increment in postharvest longevity with GA 3 solution. There was an increase of 2.5 days in postharvest life of Sunbright cultivar submitted to Sodium Hypochlorite compared to the control. Solutions of GA 3 , Sodium Hypochlorite and Aluminum Sulphate proved to be efficient alternative to commercial solutions for the cultivars tested. Cultivars used showed adequate agronomic characteristics for using as a cut flower. GA 3 in pulsing solution showed potential for using in V. Choice cultivar.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológic
Genetic diversity of macauba from natural populations of Brazil.
The macauba has been identified as the most promising native species for the production of vegetable oil and biomass. Several studies confirm its potential for numerous purposes (liquid and solid biofuels, food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals), but this Brazilian biodiversity resource has been little explored, and work aimed at their domestication and genetic improvement are relatively recent. This study consisted of a multivariate approach to levels of trans fatty acids, oil yield and physical characteristics found in fruits of macauba of natural populations. The objective was to quantify the genetic variability among 35 genotypes of natural populations of macauba from 16 locations in different regions of Brazil. Euclidean Distance measurements were estimated and the cluster analysis obtained by the UPGMA method considering separately the fatty acid profile, and traits related to physical part and the fruits oil content
