This work aims to identify, describe, and analyze the cognitive processes that enable us to understand the concepts of love and death in the poem Annabel Lee, written by the American author Edgar Allan Poe. The analysis adopts a qualitative and interpretive approach, guided by the principles of Cognitive Linguistics - specifically, the Conceptual Integration Theory (Fauconnier; Turner, 2002) and the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff; Johnson, 1980). Thus, we demonstrate that Cognitive Linguistics can contribute to the understanding of which cognitive processes are activated during the interpretation of poetic texts. This demonstration also considers the poet’s expressive intentions, as well as our own understanding as human, thinking, and creative beings.

Death, rebirth and considerations of the ‘indigenous’ in Kathleen winter’s Annabel

This article examines Annabel, a novel by Canadian author Kathleen Winter, through a decolonial lens infused with a consideration of Native Canadian survival, resistance, and rebirth. This reading stratagem enables one to understand how the main character, intersex individual Wayne/Annabel, may suggest how principles of Indigenous resistance can aid an understanding of intersex and gendered identities.. Moreover, this paper brings together a focus on perceived cultural death (a strategy employed historically by the Canadian government, as in the case of residential schools, to justify horrendous policies to ‘save’ Indigenous cultures through assimilation) and intersex/gendered ‘death’ (a death enforced by society’s refusal to accept and give life to the latter via recognition and understanding) in order to suggest how rebirth and a denial of death take place through new theoretical examinations. The article departs from previous readings of Annabel, which, to this point, have focused mainly on the novel’s general call for an acceptance of difference and on its possibility of providing ecocritical commentary. Rather, this paper is a call to embrace and create theories that disregard death (that is, the perceived death of both Indigenous nations and individuals whose intersex identity is not given life by those who adhere to ‘normative’ societal identities) and provide new strategies for reading sexual and gendered identities through a lens shaped by a recognition of the continuance of Indigenous life. In particular, the article revisits the principles of rebirth and resistance revealed by the Canadian Native Renaissance of the 1960s and 1970s and blends the latter with a consideration of intersex and gender realities. In doing so, the paper proposes a fresh theoretical outlook and tact for reading intersex and gendered identities through a consideration of Indigeneity

Now well-known in the West due to the development of tourism and prostitution, Thai traditional massage (kannuat phaen boran), far from being an exotic or erotic gadget, plays a specific part, still not much studied, in Thai therapy. Based on the analysis of hand practice as it is taught in the most reputable massage school in Thailand (Wat Pho), this article deals with the process of transmission of the corpus of knowledge related to this therapy, which relies mainly on practical training instead of verbal transmission. This specificity of the teaching process led the author to question the theoretical assumptions which underline the practice, to analyse terminologies used, to (re)define the anatomic concepts which are brought into play in traditional Thai massage - and, in the end, to surmise the reference to a networked anatomy concept in which the abdomen plays the central role. Vallard Annabel. Effects of inulin supplementation on markers of mineral and bone metabolism and the gut microbiota in hemodialysis patients

    No full text
Up to 80% of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have some degree of mineral and bone disorder (MBD), which is associated with higher morbidity and mortality, specifically from cardiovascular causes. Despite the pharmacological treatment for MBD, its prevalence remains high, especially for patients with kidney failure undergoing chronic hemodialysis (HD) treatment. Restriction of dietary phosphorus along with phosphate binders represents an important part of the treatment of MBD. However, due to this restriction along with a potassium-restricted diet, HD patients limit a variety of foods that contain dietary fiber. The supplementation of dietary fiber, specifically fermentable fiber, has been explored in other clinical populations with MBD, such as female adolescents and postmenopausal women. While it is known that this supplementation leads to a higher production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) by the gut microbiota and an effect on the absorption of calcium and magnesium, this mechanism remains unexplored in HD patients. The supplementation of inulin, a fermentable fiber, represents a feasible and low-cost co-adjuvant therapy for the treatment of MBD in HD patients. Therefore, the objective of this dissertation is to examine the effects of the supplementation of inulin on bone and mineral metabolism and the gut microbiota in HD patients.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2019-05-01The student, Annabel Biruete, accepted the attached license on 2017-04-15 at 17:02.The student, Annabel Biruete, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2017-04-15 at 18:09.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2017-04-18 at 09:45.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #10781 on 2017-08-10 at 14:30:50Made available in DSpace on 2017-08-10T19:51:58Z (GMT).
