Abstract : In this study, I present a discussion about poetic rhythm from the workof Rui Pires Cabral. The research corpus is constituted by poemsbelonging to the two versions of the book A super-realidade (1995;2011) and the book Longe da aldeia (2005). The main objective of thisstudy is to understand how the relationship between the poetic subjectand the contemporaneity formally develops in the poetry of this authorwho opts for the use of free verse, which enables different rhythmicreadings of each poem. Therefore, I articulate a brief history about thecontemporary Portuguese poetry, accompanied by a very general look ofsome formal concepts mobilized in such work in order to understandhow the poetic rhythm contributes to materialize this relationship
Jornadas de Física por ocasião da jubilação do Professor Rui Namorado Rosa
Foreword
This book is a tribute to Professor Rui Manuel Vassalo Namorado Rosa at the end of his career as a distinguished Professor of Physics of the University of Évora. Al- though Professor Rui Rosa’s main work has focused on research and academic activi- ties, in particular as Vice-Rector and Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Uni- versity of Évora, his rich curriculum vitae encompasses many other activities ranging from social interventions and citizenship, science communication, and participation in debates of international significance. His ever recognized friendliness and helpful- ness granted him many friends that have beneficiated much from his wise advice, far- sighted views, open-minded judgment, and well-based opinions. His work and com- mitment with the University of Évora has much contributed to research, teaching development, and internationalization of different fields of this University. This is why Professor Rui Rosa, who acts and considers himself as an ordinary man, got the respect and esteem of so many people and deserved the tribute that the Academia has decided to celebrate his retirement.
Professor Rui Rosa graduated in Physics and Chemistry in the University of Lis- bon (1961), got his PhD in Plasma Physics from the University of Oxford (1969). From 1961 to 1983 he did research at the Physics and Nuclear Engineering Labora- tory (LFEN/LNETI) in Lisbon. Since 1983 to June 2010 he was Full Professor of Physics at the University of Évora. His diversified publication list includes the early works on plasma physics, works on conventional energy and renewable energy re- sources and technologies, as well as recent works on energy policy, together with es- says on the educational and social impacts of science and technology.
This book includes three essays, namely on the organizational aspects of science, nuclear energy, and rational thinking, together with the contributed papers by the au- thors that participated in the workshop “Jornadas de Física” held at the University of Évora, on 15-16th June 2010, as a part of the celebration of Professor Rui Rosa’s retirement. CHONDROITIN SULFATE AS A BIOACTIVE MACROMOLECULE FOR ADVANCED BIOLOGICAL APPLICATIONS AND THERAPIES
Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are acidic, highly sulfated, complex, linear, natural heteropolysaccharides
distributed among all organisms and composed of a variable number
of repeating disaccharide units. Each disaccharide consists of one hexosamine, Dgalactosamine
(GalN) or D-glucosamine (GlcN), and one uronic acid, D-glucuronic
acid (GlcA) or L-iduronic acid (IdoA) or neutral hexose, D-galactose (Gal). According
to the type of the monosaccharide units and the glycosidic bonds between them,
GAGs can be divided into four main categories: (1) hyaluronic acid or hyaluronan
(HA); (2) chondroitin sulfate (CS) and dermatan sulfate (DS); (3) heparan sulfate
(HS) and heparin (Hep); and (4) keratan sulfate (KS) (Fig. 5.1). GAGs are present
in all animals and some of them like Hep, CS and DS are extracted from terrestrial
and marine soft tissues and cartilages for therapeutic uses. They are synthesized as
polymers of repeating disaccharides with an N-acetyl-hexosamine (GalNAc or Glc-
NAc) as one of the sugars. The alternating sugar is GlcA with the exception of KS
which contains galactose instead. HA, very peculiar because it is neither sulfated nor
covalently linked to a protein, containing GlcNAc, is not further modified, whereas
the other classes are modified by: (1) the addition of O-sulfate groups on various
hydroxyls (the three classes); (2) 5-epimerization of someGlcA residues to form IdoA
residues (DS, HS, Hep); and (3) removal of acetyl residues from some hexosamine

Ko-Homology and type i string theory
We study the classification of D-branes and RamondRamond fields in Type I string theory by developing a geometric description of KO-homology. We define an analytic version of KO-homology using KK-theory of real C*-algebras, and construct explicitly the isomorphism between geometric and analytic KO-homology. The construction involves recasting the Cln-index theorem and a certain geometric invariant into a homological framework which is used, along with a definition of the real Chern character in KO-homology, to derive cohomological index formulas. We show that this invariant also naturally assigns torsion charges to non-BPS states in Type I string theory, in the construction of classes of D-branes in terms of topological KO-cycles. The formalism naturally captures the coupling of RamondRamond fields to background D-branes which cancel global anomalies in the string theory path integral. We show that this is related to a physical interpretation of bivariant KK-theory in terms of decay processes on spacetime-filling branes. We also provide a construction of the holonomies of RamondRamond fields in Type II string theory in terms of topological K-chains. © 2009 World Scientific Publishing Company.</p

THE CHARACTER AND THE FEAR REPRESENTATION AS MAINSTAYS OF PLOT IN A INSTALAÇÃO DO MEDO, BY RUI ZINK
Abstract: Based on the theoretical reflections by Michel Zéraffa (2010) and Carlos Reis (2014), in the fields of Theory of Novel and Narratology, this article aims at analyzing the building process of A instalação do medo (2012), by the Portuguese novelist Rui Zink. This analysis start from the principle that the novel utilizes flat characters, as understood by E. M. Forster, to build not only the reality in which they are inserted, but also to establish a possible reading of the reality in which the reader belongs, characterizing the metalepsis, as comprehended by the narrative studies theory
Optimizing the human perinatal progenitor cell secretome for future paracrine therapy to counteract cardiac disease with AmnioSMART: an ERA4Health-funded project
The EU-funded Partnership ‘Fostering a European Research Area for Health’ (ERA4Health) is a programme bringing together 33 institutions from different countries, including 17 out of the 27 members of the EU, and 5 Third Countries (from which 3 are associated to Horizon Europe). The main aim of the ERA4health is to regularly sponsor international joint calls for proposals aimed at developing breakthrough collaborative research joint strategies to address current unmet clinical needs and thus reduce disease burden across Europe (source: https:// era4health.eu/at-a-glance). Among the different funding opportunities, the 2023 ERA4Health framework focused on innovative, yet feasible, treatments for cardiovascular disease with specific translational potential, as per the main goal of the call: ‘Research targeting development of innovative therapeutic strategies in cardiovascular disease (CARDINNOV)’
Market Integration in the Golden Periphery - the Lisbon/London Exchange, 1854-1891
The existence of a self-regulating arbitrage mechanism under the gold standard has been traditionally considered as one of its main advantages, and attracted a corresponding research interest. This research is arguably relevant not only to test for the efficiency of the “gold points”, but also to study the evolution of financial integration during the so-called first era of globalization. Our first aim with this paper is to contribute to the enlargement of the scope of the literature by considering the case of Portugal that adhered to the system, in 1854, at a much earlier phase than the majority of countries, thus allowing for a broader perspective on the evolution of the efficiency of the foreign exchange market. As a typical “peripheral” country, Portugal can be used as the starting point for a study of the degree of integration of the periphery within the system. Furthermore, the Portuguese exchange also illustrates the role in practice of large players in sustaining currency stability, over and beyond the atomistic forces of arbitrage and speculation assumed in conventional theoretical frameworks. We also address the question of the credibility of the authorities’ commitment to the standard, through the perspective of the target zone literature.
