This study#s objective was to evaluate the effect of weight loss over the ingestion of energy, vitamin C, carotene and vitamin E (diet / blood), blood concentration of reduced glutathione (GSH), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), catalase (CAT) and myeloperoxidasis (MPO) in patients submitted to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Methods: This was a prospective controlled single-blind study composed by a Control Group (CG) and a Surgery Group (SG), both with 5 men and 31 women, mean ages of 38.7±9.4 and 39.6±9.2 years, mean Body Mass Index (BMI) values of 22.2±2.1 and 47.6±9.1 kg/m2, respectively. The CG group was evaluated once and the SG group was evaluated in basal, 3rd, 6th, and 12th days post-surgery. After surgery, the SG group received daily supplementation of vitamin C (60mg), -carotene (3000ìg) and vitamin E (30mg). Results: Compared with basal period, weight loss in SG on the 12th month was of 35.8±1.0% (P0.001) and TG (r=0.260; P=0.002), and the TBARS with vitamin C (r=- 0.532; P0,001) e TG (r=0,260; P=0,002) e o TBARS com vitamina C (r=-0,532; P<0,001). Conclusao: Apos 12 meses, GG apresentou atenuacao do estresse oxidativo e da inflamacao com diminuicao do TBARS e de NOx

No full textThe gastric emptying of liquid test meals is dependent on resistance to flow at the pylorus and on pressure gradients between the duodenum and the body of the stomach. In the present study, we investigated the role and subtypes of muscarinic receptors during gastric emptying of various liquid test meals in conscious rats with gastric fistula after Roux-en-Y antrectomy. In the control rats with gastric fistula but with intact reflex pathways and pylorus, the non-selective muscarinic antagonist atropine (7 mg/kg i.p.) and Mi-selective pirenzepine (7 mg/kg i.p.), acting possibly on M1 receptors, delayed saline emptying by suppressing cholinergic tone and thus relaxing the body of the stomach and contracting the pyloric sphincter. On the other hand, in Roux-rats saline and hyperosmolal saline emptying were not significantly affected, while the inhibitory effect of HCl was completely reversed. Furthermore, peptone-induced delay of gastric emptying in control rats was also reduced in Roux-rats. Pirenzepine abolished the facilitating effects of Roux-en-Y operation on acid and peptone emptying and M2-selective antagonist AF DX-116 (7 mg/kg i.p.) did not have any inhibitory effect in this regard. In conclusion, Roux-en-Y gastrectomy without vagotomy does not slow gastric emptying of liquids, and it reverses the inhibitory effects of peptone and acid through an atropine- and pirenzepine-sensitive pathway
Simple risk model predicts incidence of atrial fibrillation in a racially and geographically diverse population: the CHARGE-AF consortium

For the full list of authors, see article.BACKGROUND: Tools for the prediction of atrial fibrillation (AF) may identify high-risk individuals more likely to benefit from preventive interventions and serve as a benchmark to test novel putative risk factors. METHODS AND RESULTS: Individual-level data from 3 large cohorts in the United States (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities [ARIC] study, the Cardiovascular Health Study [CHS], and the Framingham Heart Study [FHS]), including 18 556 men and women aged 46 to 94 years (19% African Americans, 81% whites) were pooled to derive predictive models for AF using clinical variables. Validation of the derived models was performed in 7672 participants from the Age, Gene and Environment-Reykjavik study (AGES) and the Rotterdam Study (RS). The analysis included 1186 incident AF cases in the derivation cohorts and 585 in the validation cohorts. A simple 5-year predictive model including the variables age, race, height, weight, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, current smoking, use of antihypertensive medication, diabetes, and history of myocardial infarction and heart failure had good discrimination (C-statistic, 0.765; 95% CI, 0.748 to 0.781). Addition of variables from the electrocardiogram did not improve the overall model discrimination (C-statistic, 0.767; 95% CI, 0.750 to 0.783; categorical net reclassification improvement, -0.0032; 95% CI, -0.0178 to 0.0113). In the validation cohorts, discrimination was acceptable (AGES C-statistic, 0.664; 95% CI, 0.632 to 0.697 and RS C-statistic, 0.705; 95% CI, 0.664 to 0.747) and calibration was adequate. CONCLUSION: A risk model including variables readily available in primary care settings adequately predicted AF in diverse populations from the United States and Europe
