The general theme of Rose's book, the history of German rural Jews and their fight for equal civil rights, is reflected in the biographies of individual family members. The story traces the history of Emily C. Rose's ancestors, who emigrated to the United States in the middle of the 19th century. She describes the life of simple people in the villages and small towns in rural Wuerttemberg between 1730 and 1880. One of her ancestors, Moises Kaz saved the imperial city of Rottweil from Napoleon's army.Reviews in German with English translations of Emily C. Emily Brontë : the mind of a visionary

    No full text
Bibliography: leaves 216-226.This dissertation is an investigation of the visionary and philosophical aspects of Emily Brontë's works. The first five chapters deal with the visionary process such as visions, spirit guides, dreams, imagination, encounters with the darker side of the self and a union with the divine. There is considerable evidence of these mystical avenues in both her poetry and in Wuthering Heights which have been explored. It is shown how Emily Brontë's mysticism is a direct result of personal experiences which augment her reputation as one of the leading mystics in the world of literature. There are however tensions in her works, such as the cynicism of her own intellect in accepting the visionary experiences as authentic and periods of suffering when her faith is tested. These tensions have been considered within the context of her mystical encounters and philosophy. The remaining four chapters deal with the philosophy of Emily Brontë per se. Her beliefs in respect of heaven and hell, mercy and justice, power and survival, and pantheism are considered in depth. It is argued that she is an unorthodox thinker who does not believe in an eternal hell and that she has drawn inspiration for this idea from Frederick Maurice and Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is also shown how issues of power have been of interest to her from a young age and how this needs to be integrated within her philosophy. To the writer power needs to be tempered by compassion if it is to be of use to society or the individual. Her pantheistic spirit is also investigated and related to the mystical ideas

Abstract: This dissertation, from the perspective theoretical and practical of Augusto de Campos about the poetry translation, analyzes seven of his translations of the North-American poet Emily Dickinson, published in the book "Emily Dickinson: não sou ninguém", in 2008. This work contains three chapters; the first presents the main elements that constitute the Dickinson's poetry, as well as the Brazilian translations of her poems. It has, as theoretical support, author slike: Gilbert and Gubar (1984), Donoghue (1969) Sewall (1963) and Daghlian(1987). The second chapter aims to approach the main remarks of Augusto, highlighting his activity as poet and as translator, aiming to understand his practice of translation. The third chapter analyses the Augusto's translations of seven poems of Dickinson and try to identify the relationship between the theory and the practice of the translator. This discursive, besides the formal and syntactic field focuses on the semantic field of the poems, without any kind of prescriptive judgment

Analysis of the Changing Portraits in "A Rose for Emily"

In his renowned short story, A Rose for Emily, the master artist William Faulkner verbally paints the portraits of a tragic woman, Miss Emily. Throughout this story, Faulkner creates numerous figurative portraits of Emily, and makes her physical appearance change dramatically. The description of Emily’s changing physical appearance in different periods enables the readers to watch how Emily transforms from a slender lady to an old gloomy “bloated” one, and from an obedient, genteel young girl to a murderer and corpse keeper. This paper just aims to unveil Emily’s interior complexity and internal changes through the analysis of her external changes and at the same time attempts to explore the causes for her changes. Scaled experimental models of gravitational collapse: analysis of structures formed during creation and retreat of erosional scarps

    No full text
This thesis presents the results of scaled experimental models of gravitational collapse, the non-catastrophic failure of an oversteepened cliff. The main modeling material is wet clay, which simulates typical lithified, upper-crustal rocks; the nature-to-model scaling factor for size is ~105. Silicone polymer in one model simulates a highly ductile layer (e.g., salt). In all models, scarp creation involves gradual downcutting along a vertical surface. In the standard model (6 cm of clay with a density of 1.60 g/cm3), faults lengthen and link to form a main normal fault that dips towards and strikes parallel to the erosional scarp; the zone of deformation is narrow. Cross sections of the standard model show that the main fault is listric, most minor faults are listric and dip toward the erosional scarp, shallow layers dip toward the scarp whereas deep layers dip away from the scarp, and the base of the scarp bows out. Fault-heave analyses show that differential iii extension (increasing with depth and with proximity to the erosional scarp) accounts for these features. Geometric models of listric faults do not incorporate differential extension, and thus do not predict the layer geometries observed in the standard model. Models with stronger (denser) clay require taller scarp heights to initiate gravitational collapse. In the model with silicone polymer, deformation (conjugate faults and grabens) is distributed over a larger area compared to the standard model. Faults that form during scarp retreat (lateral removal of clay) evolve similarly to faults formed during scarp creation. A preliminary model with a curved erosional scarp yields a deformation zone that closely parallels the scarp. The Statfjord field (Norway), the Sirikit field (Thailand), and the Fairy Dell sea cliffs (Dorset, England) share some similarities with the standard model: listric faults that strike parallel to and dip towards the erosional scarp and layers rotated away from the erosional scarp; however, they do not have layers rotated toward the erosional scarp. Deformation in Canyonlands National Park is similar to that in the model with silicone polymer: conjugate faults and grabens are related to flow of a ductile unit toward the erosional scarp.M.S.includes bibliographical referencesIncludes abstractby Emily Rose Poorvi

This thesis analyzes the aspect of the development of schizophrenia on the main character from the short story of "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner 1930. The writer uses psychoanalysis approach in analyzing the main character named Miss Emily. This research is conducted by using qualitative descriptive method, which is a study that explains about the development of schizophrenia on Miss Emily. Some theories are used to support this research which are positive symptoms of schizophrenia, negative symptoms of schizophrenia, DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder- fifth edition) and defense mechanism. The result of this study reveals that the development of schizophrenia influences Miss Emily’s character. The schizophrenia symptoms that Miss Emily suffered in the earlier stage include delusion, social withdrawal and lacks of insight. Schizophrenia symptoms that exist on Miss Emily in the development stage consist of persistence delusion, social withdrawal, avolition and alogia. Schizophrenia symptoms which appear on Miss Emily in the final stage consist of avolition and lacks of insight. Miss Emily employs some defense mechanism to overcome her anxiety due to schizophrenia. Thus, Miss Emily dies as she surrenders with schizophrenia disease. It then can be concluded that the development of schizophrenia influences Miss Emily’s character.                ABSTRAK   Lubis, Sri. 2018. Memorialising the (Un)Dead Jewish Other in Poland: Spectrality, Embodiment and Polish Holocaust Horror in Władysław Pasikowski’s Aftermath (2012)

    No full text
This article analyses the function and symbolic currency of Poland’s recent literary and artistic motif of the returning Jew, which brings the nation’s Jewish Holocaust victims back to their homes as ghosts, spectres and reanimated corpses. It explores the ability of this trope—the defining feature of what I call ‘Polish Holocaust horror’—to cultivate the memory of complicitous and collaborative Polish behaviour during the Holocaust years, and to promote renewed Polish-Jewish relations based upon a working-through of this difficult history. In the article I explore Władysław Pasikowski’s 2012 film Aftermath as a self-reflexive product of this experimental genre, which has been considered ethically ambiguous for its necropolitical treatment of Jews and politically controversial for its depiction of Poles as perpetrators. My analysis examines haunting as central to these popular cultural constructions of Holocaust memory—a device that has been used within the genre to mourn but also expel guilt for the previously forgotten or supressed dispossession and murder of Jews by some of their Polish neighbours
