Nostra Aetate and the Future of Catholic-Jewish Relations

    No full text
In 1965, the Catholic Church embarked on one of the most remarkable religious transformations in human history when its Second Vatican Council retracted the accusation of deicide, God-murder, against the Jewish people. In the aftermath, leaders of the Church committed themselves to establishing good relations with the Jewish people and to disseminating the Council\u27s teachings. This lecture will explore how this work has become increasingly complex in recent years, and will consider the future of Catholic-Jewish relations, and Christian-Jewish relations more broadly

Educating Hearts and Minds: Integrating Historical Empathy in Catholic Schools’ Social Studies Curriculum

    No full text
This paper addresses why and how Catholic school teachers can effectively build historical empathy in a social studies classroom by integrating the Catholic faith. Historical empathy, which emphasizes understanding the perspectives, experiences, and contexts of people from the past, is widely recognized as a critical component of effective history education. However, while significant research explores how and why to cultivate historical empathy, there is a notable gap in the literature regarding its application in Catholic classrooms. This study bridges that gap by combining a theological and pedagogical framework with insights from a case study conducted in a Catholic social studies classroom. The case study demonstrates how integrating Church teachings—particularly those emphasizing Catholic social teaching, virtues, and Catholic exemplars—can enhance students\u27 historical empathy. Through practical, faith-integrated strategies and lesson ideas, this research aims to empower Catholic educators and supporters to engage students more deeply with history and develop critical thinking skills while fulfilling the goals and mission of Catholic education

Spiritual Grounding in Sacred Soil: The Picuris/Peñasco Valley as a Model for Catholic Unity Across Cultures

    No full text
This thesis examines the Picuris/Peñasco Valley of Northern New Mexico as a unique case study for understanding Catholic unity amidst cultural plurality and historical tension. The study investigates how the confluence of Picuris Pueblo (Tiwa) Indigenous spirituality and Hispano/Spanish Colonial Catholic traditions has forged a profoundly localized and resilient faith community. Drawing upon historical analysis of colonial resistance, cultural anthropology, and theological reflection, this work argues that the concept of sacred land (sacred soil) functions as the central unifying principle. It reveals how the shared commitment to the land facilitated a process of religious and cultural syncretism, creating a form of Catholicism that is deeply rooted in place and transcends rigid cultural boundaries. The thesis concludes by proposing the Picuris/Peñasco Valley model as a vital paradigm for the contemporary Church, demonstrating how respect for distinct cultural narratives and geographical rootedness can lead to an authentic, enduring, and inclusive expression of faith

Islamic Lessons for the Catholic Church: How an Old Rival Can Become a New Friend

    No full text
While the Catholic Church in the West has experienced a wave of disaffiliation over the past few decades, Islam has grown significantly. This growth is due not only to immigration and demographics, but also to conversions. What can the Catholic Church learn from the success of Islam? In this 2025 Killeen lecture I will present elements of Islamic theology that animate the spiritual life of many Muslims: the mystery of God, the life of the believer as a “test,” the tension between divine mercy and justice, and the fervor for faith proclamation, known as dawah. Together these elements might serve Catholics today as lessons which, in a distinctive way, might be brought back into the life of the Catholic Church. Thereby, I propose, an old rival of the Church might become a new friend
