Com esse conjunto de procedimentos, buscam-se os subsídios para que se possa fazer emergir as diferenças e os pontos de convergência, bem como a força do mito na aproximação entre as culturas aqui convocadasThis doctoral dissertation is based on the concept of Faustic tissue, formulated by Jerusa Pires Ferreira, and traces a cartography of the trajectory of the mythical figure of Faust, including its incorporations and translations into the most different languages, especially in literature, theater, music and cinema. We discuss precursors of Faust, such as Cyprian of Antioch, and the mutations of Faust from his historical figure to the consolidation of the myth in his pact with Mephistopheles. We also debate the first narratives, oral and written, going through tragedy, redemption and salvation, up to the insertion of Goethe's Faust in modernity and its incorporations and translations in an incessant process and in new languages. Then, this cartography detects reverberations in the translations of the Faustic in Latin America and North America. To this end, we evoke concepts from Lotman’s cultural semiotics and those of transcreation and transluciferation elaborated by Haroldo de Campos, among others. The objective is to identify and highlight possible cultural and mythical intersections between the Faustic figures of Latin America and North America, in a section highlighted throughout the work, which brings African crossroads myths into dialogue. The methodology is qualitative, with procedures for surveying, selecting, analyzing, comparing and intertwining bibliographic material, including fictional, documentary, literary, cinematographic and musical, always taking into account the specificities of each language. With this set of procedures, Search resources that allow the emergence of differences and points of convergence, as well as the strength of the myth in bringing together the cultures mentioned hereCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – CAPE
From Rossellini to Rossellini: two overlapping processes of creation
The Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossellini was, of all neorealist filmmakers, which brought to the fiction cinema the documentary aesthetics to its greatest radicality. In his “war trilogy”, consisting of Rome, open city, Paisà and Germany, year zero, this documentary aesthetics largely derives from the use of non-professional actors, recruited in the local population, and filming on location. In the trilogy and in several of his films, earlier and later, his younger brother, the composer Renzo Rossellini, signs the soundtracks. In this article, we will discuss their processes of creation and the aesthetic options of one and the other, in order to show how often they seem to clash or at least overlap. Taking as object the work developed by both in Germany, year zero, we will present as a starting point a graphic – elaborated by us – in which we will relate fifty-five film sequences to the respective soundtrack, as a means of demonstrating our thesis.
Body and affect in Germany year zero, by Roberto Rossellini: interweaving cartographies
The piece integrates the so called “trilogy of war”, preceded by Rome, open city (1945) and Paisà (1946). In contrast to the previous productions, this film has received much less attention from the audience and the critics. Based on specialized literature and film analysis, we provide an aesthetic cartography and an ethical cartography to the wanders and meetings of the protagonist, Edmund, a twelve year-old boy who struggles to survive among the rubbles of a Berlin devastated by war, until his unexpected suicide. The film’s aesthetic cartography is revealed in the course of the horizontality of the sequence planes (but also in moments of verticality), in the first planes, in the use of lights and shadows, in the mise-en-scène, in the constant wander of the protagonist, in the use of optic and sound images, which, according to Deleuze, is placed among the neorealist legacy, and in the casting direction that highlights a notorious expressionlessness. The affect cartography, or ethical cartography, arises as an interweaving that merges the aesthetic aspects whilst evoking Spinozism concepts that underlies the idea of ethics as “mode of being”. Through the understanding of Edmund’s body as a speech and based on the assembly of the aforementioned cartographies, the goal is to investigate what that body communicates. Our study aims at defining and exploring aspects attached to the body-time-space relationship, as well as evoking an ethical sense from Spinoza’s point of view. What does Edmund’s body tell us? Our hypothesis is that the “speech” of his body is even more eloquent when it is not saying: Edmund’s body does not act; it reacts instead. Consequently, at certain moments, we have the impression of staring at an expressionless look, such as an automaton’s. As a foreign in his own country, Edmund is nowhere, in a non-childhood. Hence his vulnerability to everything he sees and listens. It’s a saturated, drifted body, which finds place neither among adults or younger and older children. Just before meeting death, this body finally gives itself to games, amusements, and a placeless childhood. As a secondary objective, we tried to make arise from this interweaving, even though its end of apparent hopelessness, what Rossellini claimed to be his intention: bequeath to the cinema an art workpiece of deep love to life as potency and invention of other worldsCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPE
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
