This doctoral dissertation aims to analyze the works of Caio Fernando Abreu and Joca Reiners Terron in which several sexualities are represented. Based on said assumption, Caio Fernando Abreu's short stories “Meio silêncio”, “Madrugada”, “Aqueles dois”, “Terça-feira gorda”, “Sargento Garcia”, “Dama da noite”, “Uma praiazinha de areia bem clara, ali, na beira da sanga”, “Uma história confusa”, “Angie” and “As quatro irmãs (uma antropologia fake)” were selected for the present study. That choice is justified by the possibility of investigating the manner in which characters that do not fit heteronormativity were developed in texts published by the author from the 1970s to the 1990s. A contemporary work by Joca Reiners Terron was also selected for this research, namely, the novel “Do fundo do poço se vê a lua”, published in 2010. This text serves as a basis for this study to highlight the permanence of the bias of intolerance in the literary field. In this dissertation, the aforementioned theme is investigated through the perspective of Queer Theory applied to a comparison between Caio Fernando Abreu’s and Joca Reiners Terron’s output, emphasizing the way in which lives that are considered deviant are presented via the use of literary devices in the texts that were read. The works of Michel Foucault (2018), Judith Butler (2016), Guacira Lopes Louro (2018a), Berenice Bento (2006), among others, lay the foundations for the discussion of multiple sexualities and how they are perceived by society. Once the history of the literature that addresses said issues is resumed, the power structures that corroborate the maintenance of a center consisting of cisgender, white, heterosexual men who belong to higher social classes are examined as well. In addition, this work also aims to survey – through a review of themes and theoretical elements in the two above-mentioned Brazilian authors’ output – a configuration of the literary panorama including portrayals of plural identities, contributing to the research conducted at the Federal University of Rio Grande's Graduate Program in History of Literature.

Taking into consideration the novel Noite dentro da noite (2017), by Joca Reiners Terron, and its author’s role as the literary organizer of the series Otra Língua – which presents to the Brazilian reader the work of writers from different Latin American countries –, this research intends to focus on the transcontinental fraternity that Terron’s work, as an author and a “curator”, outlines. This is the sense under which Noite dentro da noite, until now the author’s most ambitious novel, is “read”: as if it were the Brazilian portion of an Ibero-American continent literarily forged by the curated collection, a strategy which allows for the reflection on spaces and affections.
The influence of Thomas Pynchon and bovarism on the autofictionality of Noite dentro da noite, by Joca Reiners Terron
The contemporary Brazilian novel Noite dentro da noite: uma autobiografia, by Joca Reiners Terron, is analyzed in light of its departure from the current autofictional trend of literary realism in the country. Its escape, through a plot filled with implausible fantasies, is characterized as bovaristic, since the protagonist is a voracious reader of war stories and travel diaries. However, we come to understand that this bovarism is, above all, authorial – stemming from a literary influence that shapes both the content and the form of the novel: the American author Thomas Pynchon and his 1970s classic, Gravity\u27s Rainbow
A CONSTRUÇÃO DA MEMÓRIA PELO VIÉS DA VIOLÊNCIA EM NOITE DENTRO DA NOITE, DE JOCA REINERS TERRON
This study aims to analyze the construction of memory through the bias of violence in the novel Night within the night (2017), by the contemporary Brazilian writer, poet, prose writer, playwright, graphic designer, reviewer and translator, Joca Reiners Terron. Selected, among many other works by the author, for raising several concerns about individual and/or collective trauma(s) produced in the individual. The novel conceived from the twelfth chapter, 'The Mouse in the Labyrinth', allows us to engender in the universe of memory through the bias of violence. In it we find a combination of memory, politics, adventure and mystery. It begins with the accident of the character "you", in Medianeira, a city in Paraná, however, "most of the story" is set "in Mato Grosso and the Paraguayan Chaco" (TERRON, 2017, p. 379), where the boy grows up in the midst of the violence of a society dominated by the civil-military dictatorship. However, the plot also engenders other paths through fiction, such as the rescue of the ancestors of the Reiners family and those condemned to violence and clandestinity imposed by exceptional political regimes. The history of violence in Brazil, in the period of 1960 and 1970, is rescued by Terron, in an attempt to fill the gaps left unanswered during the "Year of the Great White" – Year erased from the memory of the character "you" from the accident - in the memory of the "unremembered". In the narrative, we were able to prove how the memory of the character(s) was constructed/reconstructed from the concepts of violence, as this is imbricated in the ascension of man as a human being. Thus, if literature is something inherent to man, we soon conclude that violence is present in it as well. In order to reach this purpose, we take as a basis the literary studies of Massaud Moisés, Osman Lins, Gerard Genette, among others, as well as the studies of memory, with Maurice Halbwachs, Zilá Bernd, in addition to using the conceptions of Hannah Arendt, Yves Michaud, about violence, to name some of the theorists listed in this research.
Keywords: Joca Reiners Terron; Autobiography; Authoritarianism; Memory; Violence; Noite dentro da noite.

Modelling the hidden magnetic field of low-mass stars
PL acknowledges support from a Science and Technology Facilities Council studentship. JM, AAV and RF acknowledge support from fellowships of the Alexander von Humboldt foundation, the Royal Astronomical Society and Science and Technology Facilities Council, respectively.Zeeman-Doppler imaging is a spectropolarimetric technique that is used to map the large-scale surface magnetic fields of stars. These maps in turn are used to study the structure of the stars' coronae and winds. This method, however, misses any small-scale magnetic flux whose polarization signatures cancel out. Measurements of Zeeman broadening show that a large percentage of the surface magnetic flux may be neglected in this way. In this paper we assess the impact of this 'missing flux' on the predicted coronal structure and the possible rates of spin-down due to the stellar wind. To do this we create a model for the small-scale field and add this to the Zeeman-Doppler maps of the magnetic fields of a sample of 12 M dwarfs. We extrapolate this combined field and determine the structure of a hydrostatic, isothermal corona. The addition of small-scale surface field produces a carpet of low-lying magnetic loops that covers most of the surface, including the stellar equivalent of solar 'coronal holes' where the large-scale field is opened up by the stellar wind and hence would be X-ray dark. We show that the trend of the X-ray emission measure with rotation rate (the so-called 'activity-rotation relation') is unaffected by the addition of small-scale field, when scaled with respect to the large-scale field of each star. The addition of small-scale field increases the surface flux; however, the large-scale open flux that governs the loss of mass and angular momentum in the wind remains unaffected. We conclude that spin-down times and mass-loss rates calculated from surface magnetograms are unlikely to be significantly influenced by the neglect of small-scale field.Peer reviewe
Intranetbasierte Gruppendiskussionen.
The present thesis pursues the aim of analysing the possibilities of asynchronous internetbased discussion groups for the purpose of evaluation research in the university sector. Concerning this, the author exposes a critical reflection of evaluation research in general and university evaluation in particular. This shows the necessity of alternative meta-theoretical approaches. Subsequent to this, the author proposes an approach based on structuration and discourse theory and the interpretive paradigm to derive principles for designing and evaluating a research method for processoriented university evaluation. An evaluation of the introduced method of intranetbased group discussions indicates a number of positive characteristics for a discourse oriented evaluation practise. The author concludes with three examples of use of intranetbased group discussions

Is This Seat Taken? Behavioural Analysis of the Telethrone: A Novel Situated Telepresence Display
We present research with two novel components; a system which may improve current small group telecommunication, and an experiment to test the efficacy. Telethrone projects a remote user onto a chair, bringing them into your space. The chair acts as a situated display which can support multi party head gaze, eye gaze, and body torque such that each observer knows where the projected user is looking. It is simpler to implement and cheaper than current systems. Our primary contribution is a counterbalanced repeated measures experiment to analyse gaze interactions. We analyse the multiple independent viewpoint support offered by the system to test if it demonstrates advantage over a set-up which shows a single view to both observers; in this results are inconclusive. Self-report questionnaire data suggests that the current implementation still gives the impression of being a display despite its situated nature although participants did feel the remote user was in the space with them. Results from the eye gaze analysis suggest that the remote user is not excluded from three way poker game-play.© 2018, The Author(s), Published by The Eurographics Association. Unpacking the New Complexities of EU–Turkey Relations: Merging Theories, Institutions, and Policies
This chapter presents the rationale, objectives, and structure of this volume and introduces the reader to the new complexities that epitomize EU-Turkey relations. To this end, it provides a set of guiding questions for the volume, offers a systematic overview of the major milestones in the EU-Turkey relationship, and classifies the key determinants of these developments under three categories: multilateral frameworks and external crises, internal EU and Turkish domestic developments, and EU-Turkey bilateral processes. The chapter then introduces the three-dimensional approach of the volume that brings together the analytical lenses of (1) theories and concepts, (2) institutions, and (3) policies based on a comprehensive survey of both key primary sources and academic literature dealing with the relationship. In a final step, the chapter presents the ensuing fifteen contributions to the volume. © The Author(s) 2021
