Rodney Stark and the Role of Christianity in the Development of the West
The thesis analyzes the contribution of Christianity to the development of Western civilization, taking Rodney Stark’s interpretation as a primary reference. The objective is to investigate how Christian ethics, institutions, and worldview fostered social, cultural, and economic processes that shaped the West, distinguishing it from other civilizations. Through the study of Stark’s works and of other supportive and critical authors, the research reconstructs the historiographical debate on the relationship between religion and modernity. The analysis highlights the role of Christianity in the spread of literacy, the affirmation of scientific rationality, and the rise of university and economic institutions. The conclusion emphasizes that, despite its limits and contradictions, Christianity played a decisive role in the formation of the social and cultural structures that characterize contemporary Western society
Medias used to praise the secularization of modern societies. Now they only deal with the coming back of God. The school which is embodied by American sociologist Rodney Stark analyses the situation in a different way. He follows the lead of Max Weber, and he is the one of the few scientists who dare analyze the religious topic. He is also the man who began important works, such as highlighting that the United States society was not born religious. Unlike English-speaking or Italian people, the French have barely heard about Rodney Stark. The rejection is partly due to criticism of the secularization theory. On the other hand, it is also linked with his using concepts like rational choices, tension and the offer economy

Position of Rodney Stark in contemporary sociology of religion
This paper is focused on Rodney Stark - an influential scholar in contemporary sociology of religion. It describes the development of Stark´s theoretical approach, which proceeded from the collaboration with Ch. Y. Glock to the cooperation with W. S. Bainbridge (aplication of the rational choice theory into a sociology of religion). Basis of the rational choice theory in science of economy and psychology is also pictured. Application of the theory is shown on examples of typology of new religious movements, as well as interpretation of development of Christianity and recent Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Part of this paper is also dealing with issue of Stark´s engagement in question of religiosity of scientist and issue of darwinism. Last part of this paper is dedicated to the description of exchange of views on the theory in specialised publications.Katedra religionistiky a filosofieDokončená práce s úspěšnou obhajobo
A secularização segundo Peter L. Berger e Rodney Stark/William Sims Bainbridge
Berger (chapter 1) affirms in Sacred Canopy the decrease of religion in modernity, whereas Stark/Bainbridge (chapter 2) supports in A theory of religion its increasing or maintenance. However, both theories have problems (chapter 3). Berger is criticized to affirm the equivalence between modernity and secularization, the belief in a previous age of the faith and the necessity of religious monopoly; Stark/Bainbridge are criticized to defend previous power of rational choice theory, a decontextualized universal rationality and an merely economic approach of religious phenomenonCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superio
Notions of magic in Rodney Stark and William Sims Bainbridge’s Theory of Religion
A Theory of Religion, by sociologists Rodney Stark and William Sims Bainbridge, represents a significant theoretical effort in the contemporary sociology of religion. It may also be a good analytical option for understanding general aspects of magic, since, throughout A Theory of Religion, Stark and Bainbridge provide extensive formulations on the subject, making possible - with the proper systematization - a set of statements with a certain autonomy. Thus, this paper seeks to systematize and conduct a critical analysis of Stark and Bainbridge’s notions of magic in A Theory of Religion. It is hoped that this systematization work will facilitate the understanding and eventual use of these notions by academic researchers of magic, a research area with few works of purely theoretical scope since the second half of the twentieth century
The rise of Christianity and cities of God : some critical remarks to the works of Rodney Stark
This article tries to highlight some problematic views connected with Rodney Stark\u27s application of "religious market model" in the context of the late antique world. It seems that: 1) Stark\u27s general assessment about the character of the religious market of the Roman empire is incorrect (the market is pluralistic, but not unregulated); 2) his theory does not cover full spectrum of potential producers of religious product (especially producers of collective goods of non-exclusive character); 3) his theory excludes "firms" belonging to the state and city public cults; 4) his statistical evaluations are based on unknown statistical data; 5) there are some opinions in his narrative that appear to be uncritically favoring Christian attitudes and achievements and denigrating the pagan ones, which does not, in my opinion, meet requirements of scientific objectivity and impartiality
