Shubnikov—de Haas oscillations, peaks and different temperature regimes of the diagonal conductivity in the integer quantum Hall conductor
No full textA theory for the Shubnikov—de Haas oscillations in the diagonal conductivity σxx of a 2D conductor is developed for the case when electron states within the broaden Landau levels are localized except the narrow stripe in the center. The standard Shubnikov—de Haas oscillations take place only in the low-field region which at higher magnetic fields crosses over into peaks. In the limit Ωτ >> 1 peaks in the σxx became sharp and between them σxx → 0 (Ω is the cyclotron frequency, τ is the electron scattering time). The conductivity peaks display different temperature behavior with the decrease of temperature, T: a thermal activation regime, σxx exp(-Δ/T), which holds at higher temperatures, crosses over into the variable-range-hopping regime at lower temperatures with σxx 1/T exp(-√(Т₀/Т) (the prefactor 1/T is absent in the conductance).The work was supported by INTAS, project

Ontwerp van een beslissingsmethodiek voor de inzet van noodoverloopgebieden langs de Waal
No full textIn verkennende studies die in het kader van het project 'Ruimte voor de Rivier' zijn uitgevoerd, wordt gesuggereerd dat er bepaalde gebieden in Nederland 'aangewezen' moeten worden, die in geval van nood (bij een afvoer boven de 16000 m3/s) gevuld kunnen worden met overtollig rivierwater. Deze gebieden worden noodoverloopgebieden genoemd. Door het water op te vangen in noodoverloopgebieden kan bij extreem hoge afvoeren meer controle op de overstromingen uitgeoefend worden. Omdat zulke extreem hoge waterstanden nog nooit zijn voorgekomen is het moeilijk na te gaan wat er precies gaat gebeuren. Wel kunnen tegenwoordig met behulp van ontwikkelde software (SOBEK) voor rivierdynamische problemen simulaties gedaan worden die de werkelijkheid vereenvoudigd nabootsen. Het blijft echter erg moeilijk de juiste beslissingen te nemen, bijvoorbeeld ten aanzien van de aanwijzing van gebieden, die als overlaatgebied moeten worden ingezet. Voor de politieke discussie die dit onderwerp veroorzaakt is tijdens hoogwater geen tijd meer. De probleemstelling van het afstudeeronderzoek is als volgt gedefinieerd: 'In de Wet op de Waterkering is de overstromingskans van de Rfjntakken vastgesteld op 1/1250 per jaar. In het project 'Ruimte voor de Rivier' resulteert dit in een maatgevende piekafvoer van 16000 m3/s bij Lobith. Hierop wordt het Nederlandse Rijntakkensysteem aangepast zodat in 2015 deze piekafvoer veilig kan worden afgevoerd. Voor nog hogere afvoeren kunnen noodoverloopgebieden dienst doen als binnendijkse bergingsgebieden, zodat er een gecontroleerde overstroming ontstaat en waterstanden benedenstrooms van deze gebieden worden gereduceerd. Het is nu echter nog zeer moeilijk om in geval van extreme afvoeren de juiste beslissingen te nemen bfj de inzet van noodoverloopgebieden. r De doelstelling van het afstudeeronderzoek is de volgende: 'Het ontwerpen van een beslissingsmethodiek voor de inzet van noodoverloopgebieden tijdens extreem hoogwatersituaties op de Waal.' In de methodiek is het gewenst dat een willekeurige afvoergolf opgegeven kan worden die bij Lobith Nederland binnenkomt. No full textActieve magnetische lagering (AML) is het in positie houden van een roterende spindel. In deze thesis wordt het ontwerp van enkele onderdelen van een vereenvoudigde AML-opstelling uiteen gezet. Het verschil met een conventionele AML-opstelling is dat de spindel slechts in tweedimensionale richting wordt gestabiliseerd en deze niet roteert. De onderdelen van de opstelling die aan bod komen, zijn de dimensionering van de elektromagneten, het ontwerp van de spindel en het ontwerp van het frame van de opstelling. Inzichten worden verkregen op het gebied van magnetische velden om verdere theorie omtrent elektromagneten uit te werken. Een regelsysteem met sensoren zorgt voor de aansturing van de twee elektromagneten. De elektromagneten moeten in staat zijn de spindel op een vaste positie te houden. Non-linear Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the self-heating regime
No full textWe demonstrate a non-linear measurement scheme of the Shubnikov-de Haas effect based on Joule self-heating that builds on ideas of the 3 ?-method used in thin films. While the temperature dependence of the resistance, R(T), of clean metals at low temperatures saturates, a significant temperature dependence, dR/dT, appears at high fields due to Landau quantization. We experimentally demonstrate this effect in the semi-metal CoSi, resolving well quantum oscillations at low magnetic fields in the non-linear channel, which appear as 3rd harmonics of the current drive frequency. To ensure the dominant self-heating originates in the crystal, not at the contacts, we fabricate crystalline microbars using focused ion beam machining. These oscillations in non-linear channel encode the ratio between the dR/dT and the thermal conductivity of the material, rendering it an interesting probe in situations of the broken Wiedemann-Franz law. Our results present a quantitative methodology that is particularly suited to investigate the electronic structure of micro- and nano-materials at intermediate temperatures. (C) 2021 Author(s).QMA
