Introduction. Shortly after the discovery of X-rays, their practical application in the clinical practice became the object of interest of many non-medical individuals. One of them was the famous Serbian writer, Branislav Nusic. This paper presents the life and work of Branislav Nusic, as well as his article: ?Roentgen?s Photography? which was published in the journal ?Politics? (July 8, 1906; N? 892, p. 3), under the alias Ben Akiba, in the Cyrillic script. The life and work of Branislav Nusic. Alchiviadi Nu?a, later Branislav Nusic (1864 - 1938) was a great Serbian literate, playwright, journalist, photographer, politician, diplomat, member of the Serbian Royal Academy, President of the Association of Yugoslav Playwrights, manager of the theaters in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Skopje and Sarajevo, and a military volunteer in the Serbian - Bulgarian war (1885). ?Roentgen?s Photography?. The author wrote this text in his own way, the only way he could and knew, vividly and wittily. He knew about the great power and strength of X-ray radiation, and he wrote of his knowledge in this short story. Without Branislav Nusic, the history of Serbian radiology would be poorer for not seeing the X-rays by the eyes of an educated, intelligent and, above all, humorous writer. Conclusion. Branislav Nusic, alongside Nikola Tesla, Mihajlo Pupin Idvorski, Dr. Abraham Vinaver, and all past and present Serbian radiologists, has become an essential and memorable link in the chain of the history of the Serbian radiology.</jats:p

CERN Beamline for Schools 2017 Student Experiment: Search for Isolated Fractionally Charged Particles

    No full text
This article was mainly written by a team of high school students that have won the CERN Beamline for Schools (BL4S) competition in 2017. They had some help from professional scientists, in particular Branislav Ristic. The team had proposed to set up an experiment to search for elementary particles with a fractional electric charge. This paper describes the preparation of their proposal, experimental setup, detectors and data analysis throughout the search for such particles using a 10 GeV c1c^{-1} proton beam with a fixed iron target. It was clear to the team that the chance for finding such particles in a relatively simple experiment was minimal but that by doing this experiment they would learn a lot about experimental physics. Due to large amounts of noise, the result of the experiment is inconclusive. Further experimentation to search for these hypothesized particle is encouraged

Prototype module construction for the high luminosity upgrade of the CMS pixel detector

    No full text
With the planned upgrades of the LHC towards high luminosity operation, the entire CMS silicon tracker will be replaced in order to cope with the resulting elevated pileup and radiation levels. To fulfill these requirements for the CMS pixel detector, a new readout chip was developed by the RD53 collaboration in 65\,nm CMOS technology, featuring a higher readout bandwidth along with increased granularity and radiation tolerance. These chips are operated at high currents rendering the classical parallel powering of individual devices inefficient. A serial powering concept was therefore developed where the input current is shared by a chain of devices. This reduces considerably the power loss in the detector services thus keeping the requirements for powering and cooling at acceptable levels. Based on the availability of the Shunt-LDO, a voltage regulator compatible with the serial powering scheme, on the RD53 chip, a novel module concept was developed. This paper presents the module design and implementation based on the prototype RD53A devices which were evaluated in single operation and as part of a serial powering scheme

Critical regionalism in the work of architect Branislav Mitrovic

    No full text
In the Serbian architecture from the end of the twentieth and at the beginning of the twenty-first century, Branislav Mitrovic (1948) distinguished himself as the most successful author of the whole orientation, as opponent of globalization uniformity and widespread conservatism. Overall, his work links the ideas of late modern and critical regionalism as the direction of the world postmodern architecture. Filled with historical reminiscences and complex meanings, rarely built out of context, it has a signified significance in contemporary post-Yugoslav architecture, derived from universalist sterility. Mitrovic's critical regionalism does not possess the eclectic features of fashionable regionalism, but is based on the selection of the best historical traits of the Balkan-Mediterranean climate and their transfer to modernity. Traditional classical and folklore motifs succesfully revives with new materials, while regulating the spatial matrix on the most functional principles

CMOS pixel development for the ATLAS experiment at HL-LHC

    No full text
To cope with the rate and radiation environment expected at the HL-LHC new approaches are being developed on CMOS pixel detectors, providing charge collection in a depleted layer. They are based on: HV enabling technologies that allow to use high depletion voltages (HV-MAPS), high resistivity wafers for large depletion depths (HR-MAPS); radiation hard processed with multiple nested wells to allow CMOS electronics embedded with sufficient shielding into the sensor substrate and backside processing and thinning for material minimization and backside voltage application. Since 2014, members of more than 20 groups in the ATLAS experiment are actively pursuing CMOS pixel R&D in an ATLAS Demonstrator program pursuing sensor design and characterizations. The goal of this program is to demonstrate that depleted CMOS pixels, with monolithic or hybrid designs, are suited for high rate, fast timing and high radiation operation at LHC. For this a number of technologies have been explored and characterized. In this presentation the challenges for the usage of CMOS pixel detectors at HL-LHC are discussed such as fast read-out and low power consumption designs as well as fine pitch and large pixel matrices. Different designs of CMOS prototypes are presented with emphasis on performance and radiation hardness results, and perspectives of application in the upgrade of the ATLAS tracker will be discussed

While evoking a concise memory of Branislav Dešković (1883 —1937) the great Croatian sculptor of animalistic motifs, and summing up interpretations by earlier authors on the artist's work, this author acquaints us with his interesting discovery on the evident influence that Pierre-Jules Mène (1810 — 1879)t he French sculptor had on this Croatian master. Dešković was undoubtedly inspired in some of his portrayal of dogs by his knowledge of Mène's animal figures, but his scuptural concept was different in essence. The verisme of Mène's interpretation was replaced by a feeling for synthesis of form and »impressionistic« modelation of volume. Dešković's artistic vision was based on momentary impresslon, and a sketchy, free treatment of the surface and a stress on contrasts of light and shadow.L'importante scultore croato della prima metà di questo secolo Branislav Dešković (1883 — 1937) è noto specialmente come animalista e le sue sculture di cani godono anche oggi una grande popolarità.
