Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2002.Includes bibliographical references (p. 169-174).This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections. Many optimization problems arising in various applications require minimization of an objective cost function that is convex but not differentiable. Such a minimization arises, for example, in model construction, system identification, neural networks, pattern classification, and various assignment, scheduling, and allocation problems. To solve convex but not differentiable problems, we have to employ special methods that can work in the absence of differentiability, while taking the advantage of convexity and possibly other special structures that our minimization problem may possess. In this thesis, we propose and analyze some new methods that can solve convex (not necessarily differentiable) problems. In particular, we consider two classes of methods: incremental and variable metric.by Angelia Nedić.Ph.D

Effect of Titanium Dioxide Addition to Heat Polymerized Acrylic Resin Denture Base on Surface Rougness and Color Stability

    No full text
Heat polymerized acrylic resin is a material that is often used as a denture base material in dentistry because it has the advantages of good aesthetics, small dimensional changes, non-toxicity, easy to obtain, easy to process, and relatively cheap price. However, besides that, heat polymerized acrylic resin also has disadvantages which have low mechanical and physical properties, so efforts are needed by adding a reinforcing material in the form of titanium dioxide (TiO2). The addition of titanium dioxide can improve the physical and mechanical properties, but the effect on other properties such as surface roughness and color stability of the heat polymerized acrylic resin denture base is not known. The design of this study was a experiment laboratory with a post test only control group design. The sample in this study was heat polymerized acrylic resin denture base with 4 groups is the group without the addition of titanium dioxide and the group with the addition of titanium dioxide with a concentration of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%. The sample size to be used for surface roughness testing according to ADA specifications No.12,1999 is 65 mm x 10 mm x 2.5 mm. The sample size to be used for color stability testing according to ADA Specification No.12,1999 is 35 mm x 15 mm x 0.5 mm. Testing of sample surface roughness was measured using a surface roughness tester while testing the color stability of samples was measured using a portable colorimeter CS-10. The average surface roughness value of the group without the addition of titanium dioxide and the group with the addition of titanium dioxide with concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% were 0.192 μm, 0.187 μm, 0.156 μm, 0.119 μm while the average values the average color stability of the group without the addition of titanium dioxide and the group with the addition of titanium dioxide with concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% were 0 ΔE, 27.71 ΔE, 30.98 ΔE, 35, 41 ΔE. Data were analyzed using an independent T-test, and all group data obtained a p-value <0.05. This shows that there is a significant effect without and with the addition of titanium dioxide with a concentration of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% on the heat polymerized acrylic resin denture base on surface roughness and color stability. The conclusion of this study is the addition of titanium dioxide with concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% can affect surface roughness and color stability because it can decrease surface roughness to acceptable clinical limit values, but still consider the effect on color stability because it has exceeded the accepted clinical limit value, so the color denture base heat polymerized acrylic resin is unaesthetic.111 PagesSkripsi Sarjan

Generation z in Indonesia has a high interest in joining online communities or groups. Through online communities, Generation Z can interact via digital media or directly with people who have similar interests. So, it will be easier for them to show their identity. However, there are several irresponsible parties who take advantage of Generation Z's enthusiasm by exploiting their creative ideas. In this way, there is a potential that the identity that one wants to show and develop cannot be achieved. Therefore, it is important for a community to support generation z in forming the identity that its members want. This research aims to analyze the communication identity of Generation Z who are members of the Novo Club online community. The research method used is a qualitative approach using interviews and observation as data collection methods. The research results show that the communication identity that Novo Club members want to show is very diverse, including being an innovator, and in accordance with the positive characteristics of Generation Z. They show their identity through social media or in person, through their style of speaking and dressing

The purpose of this research was to determine whether a relationship existed between an individual's attributional style and the presence of depression. Attributions! style was measured across three dimensions: (1) internal verses external causality, (2) stable verses temporary causality, and (3) global verses domain specific causality. In addition to the Attributional Style Questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory and the Generalized Contentment Scale were given to 65 participants, 30 depressed and 35 nondepressed. This research found support for depressed individual's possessing a different attributional style from nondepressed subjects when they perceived themselves to have no control over the stressful life events

Under flooded paddy conditions, arsenic becomes plant-available as iron-reducing conditions ensue, while oxic conditions lead to increased plant availability of Cd in acidic soils. Because Cd enters rice through Mn transporters, we hypothesized that irrigation resulting in intermediate redox could simultaneously limit both As and Cd in rice grain due to As retention in soil and Mn competition for Cd uptake. In a 2 year field study, we used 6 irrigation managements that varied in extent and frequency of inundation, and we observed strong effects of irrigation management on porewater chemistry, soil redox potentials, plant As and Cd concentrations, plant nutrient concentrations, and methane emissions. Plant As decreased with drier irrigation management, but in the grain this effect was stronger for organic As than for inorganic As. Grain organic As, but not inorganic As, was strongly and positively correlated with cumulative methane emissions. Conversely, plant Cd increased under more aerobic irrigation management and grain Cd was negatively correlated with porewater Mn. A hazard index approach showed that in the tested soil with low levels of As and Cd (5.4 and 0.072 mg/kg, respectively), irrigation management could not simultaneously decrease grain As and Cd. Many soil properties, such as reducible As, available Cd, soil pH, available S, and soil organic matter should be considered when attempting to optimize irrigation management when the goal is decreasing the risk of As and Cd in rice grain. This work was funded by the National Science Foundation (grant #1930806)

A Distributed Augmented Lagrangian Method over Stochastic Networks for Economic Dispatch of Large-Scale Energy Systems

    No full text
In this paper, we propose a distributed model predictive control (MPC) scheme for economic dispatch of energy systems with a large number of active components. The scheme uses a distributed optimization algorithm that works over random communication networks and asynchronous updates, implying the resiliency of the proposed scheme with respect to communication problems, such as link failures, data packet drops, and delays. The distributed optimization algorithm is based on the augmented Lagrangian approach, where the dual of the considered convex economic dispatch problem is solved. Furthermore, in order to improve the convergence speed of the algorithm, we adapt Nesterov's accelerated gradient method and apply the warm start method to initialize the variables. We show through numerical simulations of a well-known case study the performance of the proposed scheme.Accepted Author ManuscriptTeam Bart De Schutte
