Beauty and the market: Actress postcards and their senders in early twentieth century Australia
A hundred years ago the international craze for picture postcards distributed millions of images of popular stage actresses around the world. The cards were bought, sent, and collected by many whose contact with live theatre was sometimes minimal. Veronica Kelly's study of some of these cards sent in Australia indicates the increasing reach of theatrical images and celebrity brought about by the distribution mechanisms of industrial mass modernity. The specific social purposes and contexts of the senders are revealed by cross-reading the images themselves with the private messages on the backs, suggesting that, once outside the industrial framing of theatre or the dramatic one of specific roles, the actress operated as a multiply signifying icon within mass culture – with the desires and consumer power of women major factors in the consumption of the glamour actress card. A study of the typical visual rhetoric of these postcards indicates the authorized modes of femininity being constructed by the major postcard publishers whose products were distributed to theatre fans and non-theatregoers alike through the post. Veronica Kelly is working on a project dealing with commercial managements and stars in early twentieth-century Australian theatre. She teaches in the School of English, Media Studies, and Art History at the University of Queensland, is co-editor of Australasian Drama Studies, and author of databases and articles dealing with colonial and contemporary Australian theatre history and dramatic criticism. Her books include The Theatre of Louis Nowra (1998) and the collection Our Australian Theatre in the 1990s (1998)
Pessimistic View Of The Future Of Genetic Engineering In Veronica Roth’s Divergent Trilogy Novel (2011-2013): A Sociological Approach
This study is about Pessimistic View of the Future of Genetic Engineering in Veronica Roth’s Divergent Trilogy Novel (2011-2013), which is analyzed by using Sociological approach. The objectives of the study are to identify the characteristics of Pessimistic View of the Future of Genetic Engineering, to depict how Pessimistic View of the Future of Genetic Engineering, to reveal why Veronica Roth give concern in futuristic issues. This research belongs to qualitative research. The primary data of this research is Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth, while the secondary data of this research is other sources related to the study, such as: virtual sources and other printed materials that support this research. The researcher draws three conclusions in this research. First, the Pessimistic View of the Future of Genetic Engineering is characterized by such qualities as negative perception, anxiety, sadness, despair, doubtfulness, and low self-esteem. Second, the Pessimistic View of the Future of Genetic Engineering is depicted mainly through the plot illustrating that society cannot develop naturally, society wants equal treatment between genetic damage and genetic pure, society commit revenge to the bureau, and genetic damage is always accused of war, rebellion, or the kind of bad action. Third, the underlying reason of the author to give concern in futuristic issues is that the author wants to raise the awareness of the need for wise usage of science and technology, especially genetic engineering
Memória e invenção em Os anões, de Veronica Stigger
This research aims to analyze the piece of work Os anões (2010) by Veronica Stigger, writer of contemporary brazilian literature, seeking to discuss the relationships between memory and invention that cross the narratives chosen to compose the corpus of the work. Her literary production is offered here as an object of study that challenges the boundaries between literary and non-literary genres, reality and fiction, writing and life, and takes place in a mostly autonomous universe. In this perspective, the texts “Imagem verdadeira”, “200 m²”, “Poet Drummond Flat Service” and “Tatuagem” were chosen, considering procedures linked to memory, writing and fictional autobiography. As a theoretical-methodological foundation, studies of literary theory and criticism were selected, in dialogue with texts dealing with literature, memory and writing in contemporary times, in addition to the critical fortune of the author and the work studied. From that, the frequent dialogical resumption of a vast memory of texts and urban elements in the researched book stands out, as well as the relationship of reciprocity between invention and memory and the exploration of the limits between biography and fiction, in Veronica Stigger's work, as attitudes that reflect the characteristics of the contemporary literature.
Obstacle detection and tracking in an urban environment Using 3D LiDAR and a Mobileye 560
Thesis: M. Eng., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2017.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 40-41).In order to navigate in an urban environment, a vehicle must be able to reliably detect and track dynamic obstacles such as vehicles, pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles. This paper presents a sensor fusion algorithm which combines tracking information from a Mobileye 560 and a Velodyne HDL-64E. The Velodyne tracking module first extracts obstacles by removing the ground plane points and then segmenting the remaining points using Euclidean Cluster Extraction. The Velodyne tracking module then uses the Kuhn-Munkres algorithm to associate Velodyne obstacles of the same type between time steps. The sensor fusion module associates and tracks obstacles from both the Velodyne and Mobileye tracking modules. It is able to reliably associate the same Velodyne and Mobileye obstacle between frames, although the Velodyne tracking module only provides robust tracking in simple scenes such as bridges.by Veronica M. Violence In Divergent Novel By Veronica Roth (2011): Feminist Approach
This study aims to find and explain the types of violence that exist in the novel and reveal how Tris won to turn the world into peace without a faction. This research is a qualitative research. The object of this study was to analyze a novel entitled Divergent written by Veronica Roth in 2011. Data sources were analyzed through sentences related to violence found in the novel. This type of research data using text taken from two sources, namely primary data and secondary data. The author reads the novel carefully and repeatedly through primary data taken from the Divergent novel written by Veronica Roth in 2011. Then secondary data is taken through articles, internet journals related to research, literary books, and literature. The results of this study are two points. First, there are three types of violence in the novel, namely the theory of violence as an actor based on individual or group actions, the theory of structural violence, the theory of violence as a link between actors and structures. Both Tris are able to fight the violence in its path and make Tris survive to win and make the world peaceful
How to be a woman. Models of masochism and sacrifice in young adult fiction
Buffy, Bella, Veronica, Katniss, Clary, Tris and Saba : For two decades post-feminist heroines have faced life-threatening trials as part of their progress to womanhood. In this chapter I consider how young adult popular fictions operate as forms of pedagogy for young women by offering them particular models of maturity and womanhood. I explore the recurrence and reformulation of a persistent pattern of behaviour in which heroines engage in risky and/or masochistic behaviours for which they are emotionally rewarded.. These recurrences function as a form of vicarious experiential learning in which readers and viewers learn that emotional gratification and adult status are conferred through self-harm and self-sacrifice. Popular culture is not a monolithic form and young adult fictions are no exception. An analysis of fictional examples of this behaviour pattern challenges the idea that heroines today are empowered agents as a result of the legacy of feminism. At the same time, the analysis belies any notion that fictions are universally hegemonic and oppressive – fictions can and do disrupt and interrogate this pattern of emotional masochism. Scholars of public pedagogy have explored the complexities, contradictions and subtleties of the pedagogical process. Sandlin O’Malley and Burdick (2011) in their review of public pedagogy literature acknowledge that some scholarship has demonstrated how “the teaching and learning inherent within daily life can be both oppressive and resistant” (p. 144). Jubas and Knutson (2012) also see public pedagogy as an arena where contradictions and tensions are in play. They argue that we can see “New examples of dialectic or tensions … between the authority of the producer and the consumer; between traditional structures which ground identities and help people make sense of cultural texts, and personal agency which frees people to choose and invent identities and meanings” (p. 86). This analysis aims to contribute to understandings of the complexities of public pedagogy by showing how fictions aimed primarily at young women both resist and accommodate patriarchy
A Complementary Economy? National Markets and International Product in Early Australian Theatre Managements
The international circulation of commercial theatre in the early twentieth century was driven not only from the centres of Great Britain and the USA, but by the specific enterprise and habitus of managers in ‘complementary’ production sites such as Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. The activity of this period suggests a de-centred competitive trade in theatrical commodities – whether performers, scripts, or productions – wherein the perceived entertainment preferences and geographies of non-metropolitan centres were formative of international enterprise. The major producers were linked in complex bonds of partnerships, family, or common experience which crossed the globe. The fractures and commonalities displayed in the partnerships of James Cassius Williamson and George Musgrove, which came to dominate and shape the fortunes of the Australian industry for much of the century, indicate the contradictory commercial and artistic pressures bearing upon entrepreneurs seeking to provide high-quality entertainment and form advantageous combinations in competition with other local and international managements. Clarke, Meynell and Gunn mounted just such spirited competition from 1906 to 1911, and their story demonstrates both the opportunities and the centralizing logic bearing upon local managements shopping and dealing in a global market. The author, Veronica Kelly, works at the University of Queensland. She is presently undertaking a study of commercial stars and managements in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Australia, with a focus on the star performer as model of history, gender, and nation
