Comments. Baker (1898) described Neocoelidia modesta from three females, type locality Chapada, Brazil, collected in June and August. The syntypes were deposited originally in the Herbert H. Smith collection, and now are preserved in the United States National Museum (USNM), Washington, D.C., USA. To avoid future confusion over the identity of this species and the type series, a lectotype is selected. The remaining specimens from the type series are paralectotypes. Coelana modesta can be separated from other species of the genus by the characters of male genitalia, especially the ones given in the diagnosis.Published as part of Marques-Costa, Ana Paula & Cavichioli, Rodney Ramiro, 2007, Revision of Coelana Kramer, 1964 (Hemiptera, Cicadellidae, Neocoelidiinae) and taxonomic notes on the genus, pp. 33-42 in Zootaxa 1547 on pages 38-41, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.17802

Brazil (Amapá *, Bahia *, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Pará, Pernambuco, São Paulo), Peru. Biology. Under laboratory conditions, O. modesta was reared on agar and powdered milk, developing from first instar to adult in 14–17 days (Lopes 1973b). Adults have been collected from human feces, pig and mouse carcasses, chicken viscera and liver, rotten cow liver, cow lung, fish, sardine, rotten banana mixed with brown sugar, and rotten S. comosa (Lopes 1973b; Linhares 1981; Dias et al. 1984c; Mendes & Linhares 1993; Oliveira et al. 2002; Barbosa et al. 2009; Oliveira & Vasconcelos 2010; Rosa et al. 2011; Vasconcelos et al. 2013; Barbosa et al. 2015; Sousa et al. 2015, 2016; Barbosa et al. 2017). Linhares (1981) observed no differences in attractiveness of human feces, chicken viscera and mouse carcasses for O. modesta. This author also observed a lower occurrence in urban areas as opposed to rural and forest areas, indicating a low degree of anthropophily. Sunlight, as opposed to shaded areas, is also mentioned by Linhares (1981) as a preference of this species. This species was collected from chicken liver and was classified as a necrophagous/omnivorous species by Oliveira & Vasconcelos (2010). Adults have also been collected in a zoological garden in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil (Oliveira et al. 2002), in the Brazilian Cerrado (Rosa et al. 2011; Sousa et al. 2016), in a coastline region (Barbosa et al. 2015, 2017), and in urban, rural and forest environments (Linhares 1981; Dias et al. 1984c; Mendes & Linhares 1993; Vasconcelos & Araujo 2012; Vasconcelos et al. 2013). In the Brazilian state of Maranhão, O. modesta was classified as accidental and rare (Sousa et al. 2015). It is also considered an early visitor in forensic entomology (Vasconcelos et al. 2013), and showed a strong preference for preserved beaches according to Barbosa et al. (2017). This publication presents the first attempt at conducting an ethnological research by the graduate student from Merkinė Gymnasium (Varėna district) Modesta Čaplikaitė. In the course of 2018–2019, employing a questionnaire devised with the help of her teacher Rita Černiauskienė, the student recorded detailed accounts from ten women aged between 70 and 83 and living in Merkinė parish (southern Lithuania), regarding the actual means of cosmetics and hygiene and ways of nurturing their beauty that they had used in their youth. The informants answered questions regarding the kinds of cosmetics that they used, the plants that served for making natural means of treatment for face and hair, and the predominant attitude towards female health and beauty in Lithuania during 1930s and 1940s, etc. Various popular beliefs related to this area and fragments of women’s life stories were recorded as well. The author discussed all the collected data in relation to the research works from this field. The publication is based on the study by M. Čaplikaitė under the similar title, which won the first prize in ethnology at the competition for the young philologists of Lithuania in 2019.

Elements of both oral and written musical culture coexist in the symphonic poem Genocidio, by Venezuelan composer Modesta Bor; this fact allows an approach based on the dichotomies power versus resistance associated to the interaction between orality and literacy which characterizes the crash between the media penetration and the sublimation of folklore exposed by the composer. This fact generates a series of cultural dialogues that emphasise colonialism for the first time in the history of music in this country. The discourse is based on a huge “pastiche” with a media moulded intentionality that sustains a nostalgic and struggling relationship between past and present. Bor approaches intertextuality in an explicit way, juxtaposing quotes in an open aesthetic confrontation with which she assumes a political identification against the consumer society and transculturization, exposing a microhistory different from the European canonical tradition. The author of this article considers Genocidio to be the first Venezuelan postmodern musical composition.

"Una modesta Divina Commedia": Dante as anti-model in Cesare Pavese's La luna e i falo'

    No full text
In a 1949 letter, Cesare Pavese describes with great zeal the genesis of a new work — one he compares, albeit with a certain amount of irony, to Dante’s Commedia: Io sono come un pazzo perché ho avuta una grande intuizione — quasi una mirabile visione (naturalmente di stalle, sudore, contadinotti, verderame e letame ecc.) su cui dovrei costruire una modesta Divina Commedia. This embryonic project would quickly become the novel La luna e i falò, completed in less than two months and published shortly before Pavese’s suicide in 1950. On the surface, there would seem little reason to take seriously the analogy drawn by the author between La luna and the Commedia, for the novel in question contains no explicit references to the medieval poet. I shall argue in this essay, however, that the presence of Dante in La luna is both more pervasive and more significant than has previously been suggested. While critics have noted in passing several narrative and structural parallels between the two texts, which I detail in Section II, no attempt has been made to consider their wider significance in our understanding of Pavese’s novel. What follows is a reading of La luna which shows that the Commedia functions not simply as a formal model for Pavese, but, more importantly, as an ideological anti-model, in dialogue with which the author articulates his deeply pessimistic understanding of the human condition.<br/

This proposal addresses the assumptions underlying the “Science Wars” about the purpose of educational research. The author proposes a more modest “Lake Woebegon” approach to school reform that supports long-term professional education, a shift away from “Best Practices” to “Pretty Good Practices,” low fidelity implementation of interventions, and the importance of local context.
