Abstract: In this paper I offer a reply to Lombardi Vallauri’s (2008) paper, published in this journal, where the author presents a series of arguments against the hypothesis of linguistic nativism. The author considers his arguments to be devastating, however no specific reply against his paper was offered. His arguments were of seven kinds: (i) intuitive, (ii) evolutionary, (iii) genetic, (iv) scholastic, (v) legal-sportive, (vi) linguistic and (vii) pragmatic. In this paper, I analyze his argument (i) to (v). Against his position, I argue that the facts presented cannot be considered as evidence against nativism. Moreover, some of them can be seen as evidence for natisvism. Keywords: linguistic nativism; universal grammar; faculty of language
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Anaphoric negation in Brazilian Portuguese: sentential negation, emphatic negation and constituent negation
In this Dissertation, I analyze a set of phenomena related to the expression of negation in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). I deal with four main themes: (i) distribution of negative markers in different syntactic contexts, (ii) forms of encoding emphatic negation and (iii) constituent negations, (iv) and negative scope ambiguity in sentences with verbal adjuncts. These phenomena have two properties in common: (a) differently from what is normally expected in BP, the negative marker não is not placed at the left, but at the right of the negated constituent, in a configuration like [X(P) Neg]; (b) the marker has an anaphoric requirement and is acceptable only in contexts where the negated constituent has been previously introduced in the discourse or in the communicative context. The main hypothesis is that the linear order and the anaphoric requirement are the result of a syntactic property: these markers are generated in the CP and therefore are insensitive to properties encoded in the CPsystem. Throughout the thesis, I show how this sensitivity appear in different phenomena. As for item (i), I show that post-VP não shows a set of restrictions with discursive, illocutionary and syntactic properties of the sentences it occurs. I argue against proposals that analyze post- VP não as a verbal adjunct or the head of the sentential polarity category (PolP). I defend that post-VP não heads a functional category associated with confirmation and rejection of previous propositions and functions as English particles like yes and no rather than as internal markers as not. As for item (ii), I argue that post-VP não is not a form of emphasis or reinforcement of a weakened preverbal marker (in Jespersens 1917 sense). I propose that the negative quantifier nada, in non-argumental positions, is the marker responsible for emphatic negation and exclamative (or metalinguistic) negation in BP. As for item (iii), BP constituent negation behaves like sentential negation in allowing the configuration [X Neg], with the negative marker at the right of non-clausal phrases like DPs, APs, PPs and AdvPs. I show that [X Neg] is available only in contexts where negated XP occurs isolated or in a peripheral position of the sentence and is banned in medial positions. I argue then that [X Neg] in constituents negation also involves the category where post-VP não and non-argumental nada are generated, with the non-clausal constituent appearing in its specifier. As for item (iv), I examine the interpretation of negation over with verbal adjuncts in sentences with pre-verbal markers (which show scope ambiguity) and in sentences with both preverbal and post-VP markers (which show no scope ambiguity). I argue against Huang 1982 and Johnstons 1994 analyses, based on differences in c-command relations, and assume Hornstein & Nunes (2008) proposal on adjunction and labeling. I propose that the presence or absence of label in adjunctions affects scope relations in making verbal adjunct visible or invisible to negative marker
AMBIGUITY, NEGATION, AND C-COMMAND
In this paper, I analyze negative scope ambiguity in sentences with cause, temporal and purpose adjuncts, in which negation can take scope either over the predicate or over the adjunct. I discuss Huang (1982), Takubo (1985) and Johnston’s (1994) analyses, which propose that the ambiguity is derived from different c-command relations between negation and adjunct, due to an optionality of adjunction to VP or IP. Against this view, I show a set of facts which are problematic for any analysis based only in c-command, i.e., several syntactic contexts where negation should c-command the adjunct, but where the ambiguity surprisingly still holds. Based on this, I argue that c-command is a necessary, but not sufficient condition to establish negative scope. And I suggest that the availability of predicate negation and adjunct negation results from an optionality of the operation of Labeling in adjunction, according Hornstein and Nunes (2008)
Perfil da negação pós-verbal entre jovens sulistas: dados do ALiB / Post-Verbal Negation in Young Southern Speakers: Data from ALiB
Abstract: This paper combines syntactic-pragmatic concerns and dialectal issues. It describes sentential negation in southern Brazil, in comparison with properties identified in Northeast/Southeast dialects and in Portugal (CAVALCANTE, 2007, 2012). Previous literature on the phenomenon considered (i) sentences with [neg VP neg] and [VP neg] as innovations in Brazilian Portuguese (BP), originating from linguistic contact (FONSECA, 2011; CARENO; PETTER, 1994; LUCCHESI, 2001), absent in European Portuguese (EP); (ii) and [VP neg] as a northeastern peculiarity, absent in the south/southeast Brazil. However, later works attested (a) post-verbal negatives in EP, although with different values (MARTINS, 2010; CAVALCANTE, 2012, p. 57-60; LAMBERTI, 2014); (b) and [not VP not] in the south/southeast; (c) and [VP not] in the southeast (CAMARGOS, 2000; ALKMIM, 1999; 2002). Conversely, the distribution and value of [VP neg] in the southern region are not clear: this structure seems to be absent in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) (GOLDNADEL et al., 2013), but at least partially present in Paraná (PR) and Santa Catarina (SC) (FONSECA, 2009). This paper aims to map these structures in the ALiB’s surveys applied in southern region syntactic isoglosses and to describe the discursive functions and the syntactic-semantic types that they codify, in order to test the following hypotheses: (i) [VP neg] is absent in RS; (ii) but present in parts of SC and PR; (iii) when it occurs, the [neg VP neg] has an emphatic value as in EP or only an anaphoric one, as in the northeast and southeast states (CAVALCANTE, 2012, p. 28-133); (iv) the post-verbal negative marker is restricted only to declarative matrix sentences as in EP or occurs in other sentential/illocutionary types..Keywords: sentential negation; southern dialect; syntax; semantics; dialectology
