Illusion / anti-illusion: the music of Steve Reich in context, 1965-1968
This dissertation situates the work of Steve Reich during the mid-to-late 1960s in its intricate socio-cultural context. Exploring biographical, hermeneutic, aesthetic, and political implications, it attempts to shed light on the composer’s early years. The historical narrative concentrates on the period between the first instantiation of the phase-shifting technique in 'It’s Gonna Rain, or, Meet Brother Walter in Union Square after Listening to Terry Riley' (1965) and the theoretical treatise ‘Music as a Gradual Process’ (1968). It reaches back, however, to the cultural nexus of San Francisco and ahead to the mercurial gallery scene in New York. In addition, modal compositions from 1966 and 1967 are subject to detailed analyses which question the boundary between ‘impersonal’ process and composerly intervention.
Chapter 1 deals with Reich’s relationship to Process art and Minimalism(s), paying particular attention to where he presented his work and with whom he was associated. Chapter 2 traces his involvement with the San Francisco Tape Music Center, the San Francisco Mime Troupe, and the filmmaker Robert Nelson; problematic issues surrounding race and representation are also considered. Chapter 3 critiques two transitional works: 'Melodica' and 'Reed Phase', the latter representing a striking omission from the accepted Reich canon. Chapter 4 is concerned with the relationship between musical teleology and consumer desire in post-war ‘affluent society’, building on the work of Robert Fink. The conclusion proposes that broader social contradictions of the 1960s can be detected in Reich’s music

Confronting the Medusa with Athena’s Shield: Empowering Social Workers with a Transformative Role in the Migration Field
Along with existing challenges, there are new ones leading social workers to become involved in increasingly international intervention processes. This has led to the development of the concept of International Social Work (Hugman, Moosa-Mitha & Moyo, 2010; Cox & Pawar, 2006; Dominelli, 2010), which provides a good opportunity to both depart from old patterns of administering aid (Healy 2008) and to embody a perception of itself as a transformative actor (Wintergerst 2017, p. 236). Assuming that it is true that the presence of different cultures acts as a catalyst in the processes of change in society, then this is equally valid for the development of this profession (Di Rosa, 2021). A profound behavioural change cannot be accomplished simply through “more” techniques, more competencies, but needs to move up on the scale into actually transforming beliefs and constructing identity (Dilts, Hallbom & Smith, 2012; Ramanathan & Link, 1999). However, there is still a long way to go within educational systems and outside, in society, to transform our systems accordingly. In this paper, we share our insights, gained through intercultural participatory exchange formats (Reich & Di Rosa, 2022), to foster our vision, in which we suggest transforming our educational systems so that we can truly embrace differences in programmes, supporting authentic self-realisation and collective empowerment, whilst working towards co-creating sustainable futures
Historical representation in the age of lost innocence: a study of Bernardo Bertolucci's and Gilbert Adair's adaptations of The Holy Innocents
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura CorrespondenteThis research discusses the representation of French youth's culture in the late 60's in a postmodern context of critical debates, through a comparative analysis between Gilbert Adair's novel The Holy Innocents (1988), its filmic adaptation The Dreamers (2003) by Bernardo Bertolucci and Adair's second version of his novels The Dreamers (2004). Through the theoretical framework of Fredric Jameson's interpretation of art as a capital product and Linda Hutcheon's concept of historiographical metafiction, the analysis shall demonstrate that these texts represent the historical context of the May 68 uprise through a combination of nostalgia and irony. This combination results in a postmodern contradiction which indicates a need to revise history from a contemporary perspective in which longing and distance are two main issues. In this sense, historical representation becomes more than a view of the past, it is also a reflection on the postmodern context.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
