Archaelogical perspectives of the derelict churchyard of Westerhus at Frösön in Jämtland, Sweden By Lars Redin The excavation of the churchyard of Westerhus Church in Jämtland, Sweden, which was undertaken in the early 1950s, created the basis of epoch-making research into humane osteology (see for instance N.-G. Gejvall, 1960). The carefully stored and well-preserved skeleton material has made it possible to study the composition and life conditions of the population concerned. Unfortunately, the archaeological documentation has not enabled a corresponding research into the morphology of the grave material or the stratigraphical details, which could have thrown light on the relationship between the graves and the excavated church ruin. This has meant a considerable deficiency of the Westerhus material regarding source value and applicability, when compared with data from other excavated churchyards in Scandinavia. The present article attempts at compensating for this limitation. Using 71 photos kept in the cardboard boxes containing the skeleton material at the Statens Historiska Museum in Stockholm, a study in burial custom was undertaken. Creating a typological chronology concerning part of the grave material using a previously developed method was possible (see L. Redin 1976 and J. Kieffer-Olsen 1993 ). From the arm positions of the dead, a division into four types A, B, C, and D was possible. 14C dating of samples led to the conclusion that the churchyard was used for c.200 years, from the early 12th century until c.1300. A more thorough test of the 14C datings as compared the datings suggested by the arm positions is nescesary. The author rejects the theory that the stone church had a wooden predecessor. An appendix (by O. Kyhlberg and U. Strucke) discusses the possibilities and problems concerning the use of 14C dating

Vitflow: A platform to visualize tourists flows in a rich interactive map-based interface

In this paper, we describe ViTFlow, a platform to visualize tourists flows, integrating different data sources into a rich interactive map-based visualization. The data are collected using low-cost routers, enabling wi-fi passive tracking, and sensors, detecting environmental conditions, spread over the Madeira Islands. Different types of data can be visualized in the map-based interface, including spatio-Temporal mobility data (i.e., movements between places and common paths taken by tourists), airplane and cruise ship traffic, weather information, and official events. We designed the interface with the aim of providing citizens and tourists with a public display to facilitate a dialog between the different communities, exploiting synergies to promote the sustainability of the archipelago

Introduction: Heart failure is a problem facing the world, more than 20 million suffer from heart failure. Heart failure is often associated with high frequency of hospitalization and long length of stay. The Redin Scoring is an easy, simple tool for short- and long-term risk stratification to assess the severity of heart failure. This study intends to use the Redin Score as a predictor of rehospitalization for 30 days postadmission in patients with congestive heart failure at RSUP Haji Adam Malik Medan. Objective: To determine the Redin score can be used as a predictor of rehospitalization for 30 days post-hospitalization in patients with congestive heart failure at RSUP Haji Adam Malik Medan. Methods: This study is a cohort study with a consecutive sampling technique. The study was conducted on heart failure patients who were treated at the H. Adam Malik General Hospital Medan from March 2020 to September 2020 or until the number of samples was met. The outcome that was monitored was the incidence of posthospitalization rehospitalization within 30 days. Results: From 53 patients with heart failure, it was found that the proportion of patients with high risk REDIN score who underwent rehospitalization for 30 days was 42.8%, while the proportion of patients with low risk REDIN score who experienced rehospitalization for 30 days was 2%. The first study conducted by Álvarez-García regarding the use of the Redin Score as a prediction of rehospitalization of heart failure patients had a C-statistic value of 0.72 for 1 month rehospitalization. Conclusion: The REDIN score is a simple risk stratification for predicting rehospitalization within 1 month of post-admission in patients with heart failure.Latar Belakang : Gagal jantung merupakan masalah yang dihadapi dunia, lebih dari 20 juta menderita gagal jantung. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Ophthalmology. 2005 Feb;112(2):208-18; discussion 219. Mitomycin C modulation of corneal wound healing after photorefractive keratectomy in highly myopic eyes. Gambato C, Ghirlando A, Moretto E, Busato F, Midena E. SourceRefractive Surgery Service and Antimetabolite Therapy Research Unit, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Padova, Padova, Italy. Abstract PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of topical mitomycin C in corneal wound healing (CWH) after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in highly myopic eyes. DESIGN: Prospective, double-masked, randomized clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-two eyes of 36 patients affected by high (>7 diopters) myopia. METHODS: In each patient, one eye was randomly assigned to PRK with intraoperative topical 0.02% mitomycin C application, and the fellow eye was treated with a placebo. Postoperatively, mitomycin C-treated eyes received artificial tears (3 times daily, tapered in 3 months), whereas the fellow eye was treated with fluorometholone sodium 2% and artificial tears (3 times daily, tapered in 3 months). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity, manifest refraction, and biomicroscopy. Contrast sensitivity was determined using the Pelli-Robson chart. Corneal confocal microscopy documented CWH. RESULTS: Mean follow-up was 18 months (range, 12-36). No side effects or toxic effects were documented. At 12-month follow-up examination, UCVAs (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution) were 0.4+/-0.48 and 0.5+/-0.53 (P = .03) in mitomycin C-treated eyes and corticosteroid-treated eyes, respectively. At 1 year, corneal haze developed in 20% of corticosteroid-treated eyes, versus 0% of mitomycin C-treated eyes. At 12, 24, and 36 months, corneal confocal microscopy showed activated keratocytes and extracellular matrix significantly more evident in untreated eyes (Ps = 0.004, 0.024, and 0.046, respectively). CONCLUSION: Topical intraoperative application of 0.02% mitomycin C can reduce haze formation in highly myopic eyes undergoing PRK. Comment in Ophthalmology. 2006 Feb;113(2):357; author reply 357-8

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Mitochondrial DNA Repair in Neurodegenerative Diseases and Ageing

No full text
Mitochondria are the only organelles, along with the nucleus, that have their own DNA. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is a double-stranded circular molecule of ~16.5 kbp that can exist in multiple copies within the organelle. Both strands are translated and encode for 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNAs, and 13 proteins. mtDNA molecules are anchored to the inner mitochondrial membrane and, in association with proteins, form a structure called nucleoid, which exerts a structural and protective function. Indeed, mitochondria have evolved mechanisms necessary to protect their DNA from chemical and physical lesions such as DNA repair pathways similar to those present in the nucleus. However, there are mitochondria-specific mechanisms such as rapid mtDNA turnover, fission, fusion, and mitophagy. Nevertheless, mtDNA mutations may be abundant in somatic tissue due mainly to the proximity of the mtDNA to the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) system and, consequently, to the reactive oxygen species (ROS) formed during ATP production. In this review, we summarise the most common types of mtDNA lesions and mitochondria repair mechanisms. The second part of the review focuses on the physiological role of mtDNA damage in ageing and the effect of mtDNA mutations in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Considering the central role of mitochondria in maintaining cellular homeostasis, the analysis of mitochondrial function is a central point for developing personalised medicine

A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams

No full text
We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles. Topic alignment between two texts is found to increase author verification precision, and an authors writing style is found to change over time, but not more significantly after 3 years than after 1 year.Information ArchitectureWISElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

A 0.12mm2 Wien-Bridge Temperature Sensor with 0.1°C (3σ) Inaccuracy from -40°C to 180°C

No full text
Resistor-based temperature sensors can achieve much higher resolution and energy efficiency than conventional BJT-based sensors [1], but they typically occupy more area (> 0.25 mm 2 ) and have lower operating temperatures (le 125 {circ} {C}) [2]-[4]. This work describes a 0.12mm 2 resistor-based sensor that uses a Wien-bridge (WB) filter to achieve 0.1 {circ} {C} (3 sigma) inaccuracy from - 40 {circ} {C} to 180 {circ} {C}. Compared to a state-of-the-art WB sensor [4], it occupies 6 × less area and achieves comparable relative accuracy over a 76% wider operating range.
