A intensificação
Assumindo a
The current paradigm of political rhetoric lives an era of affections. In Portugal, the
popularization of the concept “rhetoric of affections” is symptomatic of this reality. The
emotional intensification of political language has not provoked, however, an increase
in scientific research in the Portuguese academic field or a better understanding of the
functioning and rhetorical effectiveness of emotion.
In the Portuguese context, the election of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa as the 20th
President of the Nation, significantly known as the “President of Affections”, is closely
related to the communicative change verified. Assuming Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s
candidacy for the Presidency as a paradigm of a rhetoric of affections, we took the 2016
presidential elections in Portugal as a case study and analyzed the articles published in
the press during that period. We intend to understand how it is built, what
characterizes, when appears, how works, and why the rhetoric of affections of Marcelo
Rebelo de Sousa is effective.
The development of the work is divided into three chapters – 1. Theory and Practice of
a Rhetorical Knowledge, 2. Deconstruction of a Rhetoric of Affections, 3. Theory and
Practice of a Rhetoric of Affections –, each one corresponding to a different
methodology of analysis – biographical, quantitative, and discursive. Throughout these
chapters, we tried to reflect on the emotional, argumentative, and strategic
characteristics of a rhetoric of affections, thus alerting to its obscure complexity and
non-innocence

This contribution recovers the "Exhortaciones a las religiosas" composed by the Poor Clare of Gandía Sister Francisca de Jesús Borja y Enríquez (1498-1557). Our aim is to provide some clues for its understanding, in light of the biographical trajectory of the author and also in light of the influence that the reforming proposals of Saint Colette exercised over her. It is a text that can also be understood in terms of the "writing for government" that was part of the political action deployed by prioresses and abbesses for the management of their communities
