Efficacy of a map on search, orientation and access behaviour in a hypermedia system

    No full text
Many researchers have proposed hypertext and hypermedia as superior learning environments over traditional linear-based approaches. At the same time, reports of disorientation amongst students working in these environments has become a topic of major concern. The study reported in this paper sets out to investigate the efficacy of the provision of maps on students' ability to search, orientation and access information in a hypertext-based learning task. The domain used required students to learn about the theory of tectonic plates. The results indicate that the greater use of maps led to less relevant searching behaviour and less effective search effort. In conclusion, it is argued that the concept of the spatial metaphor has not served the designers and students of hypertext and hypermedia environments well. Further, it is proposed that designers of non-linear learning environments would be better served by concentrating on the fundamental usability of their systems rather than attempting to introduce navigational aids, which themselves are a symptom of poor design

- O Caçador de Esmeraldas de Osvaldo Oliveira de 1979Abstract: This work is meant to show the study about the trajectory of Alfredo Roberto Alves' movie Fernão Dias, wich was produced in Campinas in 1956. The movie represents the beginning and the end of Campinas' second movié period, comprising besides it own development, other movies and their directors that belong to the same period. The adopted approach is divided in two distinct chapters: 1-The movie Fernão Dias and its own relations: The relations established with Campinas's first movie period in the 1920's. Amilar Alves, who directed João da Matta, produced in Campinas in 1923, was also the author of the play Fernão Dias, which was adapted to be a movie, by his son, Alfredo Roberto Alves. Fernão Dias, its period and influences. The outcoming of São Paulo's movie industry brings up the old desire of establishinf Campinas's movie production back. Other productions movie directors like Antoninho Hossri, Henrique de Oliveira Júnior e Femando Gardel. Is the Salam phase transition relevant to the causal origin of homochirality?

    No full text
From the point of view of (a) chemical evolution and (b) exobiology (the origin of life in the universe), we discuss the possibility that phase transitions of the type postulated by Salam in 1991 to occur in a racemic mixture of amino acids, may play instead the role of an amplification mechanism in the novel context of chirally-pure samples of amino acids. Salam's seminal contribution referred to the role of phase transitions in the induction of the observed homochirality of protein amino acids. This was assumed to occur in a racemic mixture that, as a consequence of the conjectured phase transition, turned homochiral beneath a certain critical temperature, T_c. In the present review we discuss selected theoretical aspects of the question of homochirality. The relevance of starting a new generation of experiments is pointed out, as suggested by the present author in 1991. These experiments should test a form of condensed matter that has so far not been at the forefront of research from the point of view of the phase transitions. We discuss those aspects of the origin of homochirality which are still valid and require verification

Optimal Lojasiewicz-Simon Inequalities and Morse-Bott Yang-Mills Energy Functions

    No full text
For any compact Lie group G, we prove that the Yang–Mills energy function obeys an optimal gradient inequality of Łojasiewicz–Simon type (exponent 1/2) near the critical set of flat connections on a principal G-bundle over a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension d ≥ 2 and so its gradient flow converges at an exponential rate to that critical set. We establish this optimal Łojasiewicz–Simon gradient inequality by three different methods. Our first proof gives the most general result by direct analysis and relies on our extension of a theorem due to Uhlenbeck [86] that gives existence of a flat connection on a principal G-bundle supporting a connection with L^d/2 -small curvature, existence of a Coulomb gauge transformation, and W^1,p Sobolev distance estimates for p > 1. Our second proof proceeds by first establishing an optimal Łojasiewicz–Simon gradient inequality for abstract Morse–Bott functions on Banach manifolds, generalizing an earlier result due to the author and Maridakis [31, Theorem 4]. Our third proof establishes the optimal Łojasiewicz–Simon gradient inequality by direct analysis near a given flat connection that is a regular point of the curvature map. We prove similar results for the self-dual Yang–Mills energy function near regular anti-self-dual connections over closed Riemannian four-manifolds and for the full Yang–Mills energy function over closed Riemannian manifolds of dimension d ≥ 2, when known to be Morse–Bott at a given Yang–Mills connection

Correlation between bispectral index, end-tidal anaesthetic gas concentration and difference in inspired–end-tidal oxygen concentration as measures of anaesthetic depth in paediatric patients posted for short surgical procedures

Background and Aims: Measurement of end-tidal anaesthetic gas concentrations (ETAG) is currently a pragmatic indicator for monitoring anaesthetic depth. We aimed to assess the performance of ETAG for sevoflurane (ETAG-sevo) with bispectral index (BIS) and difference between inspired and end-tidal oxygen concentration (Fi−Et)O2% in measuring anaesthetic depth in toddlers and preschool children. Primary outcome was to correlate BIS with ETAG-sevo. Secondary outcome was to correlate (Fi−Et)O2% with ETAG-sevo and to derive cut-off value of (Fi−Et)O2%which corresponds with light planes of anaesthesia [minimum alveolar concentration (MAC 7 was obtained for (Fi−Et)O2% corresponding to MAC 7 corresponded with light planes of anaesthesia

This article makes a critical reading of Meditação, the work in poetic prose by Maranhão-born poet Gonçalves Dias, published piecemeal in the magazine O Guanabara in the early 1850s. Meditação was relegated by the critics, who concentrated on Gonçalves Dias\u27 poetic production and, to a lesser extent, on his ethnographic production. It is a text in which the author is eloquently critical, in a counter-ideological movement remarkable at the time.

A randomised comparative study of Miller laryngoscope blade versus Oxiport® Miller laryngoscope blade for neonatal and infant intubations

Background and Aims: Neonates and infants are prone to oxygen desaturation during the induction of general anaesthesia. Pharyngeal oxygen insufflation has been shown to delay the onset of desaturation and hypoxaemia during apnoea. We tested the hypothesis that deep laryngeal oxygenation with Oxiport® Miller blade would delay the onset of desaturation compared to laryngoscopy without supplemental oxygen (Miller blade). Methods: One hundred neonates and infants undergoing general anaesthesia with endotracheal intubation for surgery were recruited and randomly assigned to one of the two groups: Miller or Oxiport group (laryngoscopy performed with Miller or Oxiport® blade, respectively). Primary outcome measure was the lowest oxygen saturation (SpO2) attained during intubation. Secondary outcomes were the incidence of severe desaturation (SpO2< 85%), correlation between SpO2and time to intubation in each group. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to measure the correlation between time to intubation and desaturation in each group. P< 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Data from 95 patients were available for the final analysis: Miller group (n = 48) and Oxiport group (n = 47). Mean lowest SpO2was 95.9% ± 5.75% in Miller group and 97.55% ± 2.93% in Oxiport group (P = 0.049). Correlation between time to intubation and SpO2was −0.110; P = 0.459 in Miller group and −0.468; P = 0.001 in Oxiport group. Severe desaturation occurred in 12.5% patients in Miller group and none in Oxiport group. Conclusion: Apnoeic laryngeal oxygen insufflation with Oxiport® laryngoscope blade decreases the incidence of severe desaturation during neonatal and infant intubations

Critical incidents in paediatric anaesthesia: A prospective analysis over a 1 year period

    No full text
Background and Aims: Critical incident reporting helps to identify errors and formulate preventive strategies. Many countries have existing national reporting systems. Such a system is yet to be established in India. We aimed to study the incidence of critical events in the paediatric operation theatre (OT) of our institute. Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study of all children receiving anaesthesia in paediatric OT over a period of 1 year. They were monitored intraoperatively as well as postoperatively, and critical incidents were noted in terms of date and time of incident, location (OT/post-anaesthesia care unit, clinical category, age of patient, degree of patient harm resulting from the incident, description of what happened and duration of surgery. Percentage incidence of critical events was calculated. Results: A total of 1206 children received an anaesthetic during the study. Incidence of critical events was 8.9% (108). Airway and respiratory events were the maximum recorded accounting for 60 (55%) incidents. There were 43 cases of oxygen desaturation out of which 21 were attributable to laryngospasm. Cardiovascular events were 12 (11.1%). Medication-related incidents were 4 (3.8%). Severe harm was reported in ten incidents, and 1 death was reported. A few uncommon incidents like change in voice following use of a cuffed endotracheal tube and post-operative acute renal failure requiring haemodialysis were noted. Conclusion: Incidence of critical incidents was almost one for every ten patients, and the audit helped us establish policy guidelines in our institution
