    Data de la huella dactilar

    No full text

    No full text
This research studies the fantastic short story «Pequeñas mujercitas», by Solange Rodríguez Pappe. It argues that the author uses the excess and the supernatural of the fantastic element to highlight and confront gender-based violence in the story, mounting resistance by means of popular literature’s ironic re-writing. This strategy enforces the reader’s active collaboration and prevents systematic gender-based violence from remaining unquestioned. The research main methodological axes are the theory of the fantastic (Tzvetan Todorov, Rosemary Jackson, David Roas) and the tripartite division of violence proposed by Slavoj Žižek. It concludes that Rodríguez Pappe’s strategy illuminates and denounces different aspects of gender-based violence and its roots, opening the box to think other possible orders that may start with creating a community to hold power in concert and embracing sorority as a comforting space. Keywords: Latin American fantastic literature; Solange Rodríguez Pappe; intertextuality; re-writing; gender-based violenceModern and Contemporary Studie

Yvette, Solange et Chantal : Les Québécoises de Mordecai Richler

    No full text
Mordecai Richler is viewed both as the author of polemics that insult French-speaking Quebecers and as one of the most brilliant of Anglo-Montrealer novelists, leading a number of critics to pronounce a divided judgment on him as a writer. In order to go beyond the conventional ideas associated with this dual representation, the author undertakes to analyze Richler’s ambiguous relationship with the Francophone Quebec identity as expressed not in his polemic essays, but in his novels. To carry out this project, the author analyzes the socio-semiotic function of Yvette, Solange and Chantal, three French-speaking female characters from the novels The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1959) and Barney’s Version (1997)

The Politics of Race and Patriarchy in Claire-Solange, âme africaine by Suzanne Lacascade

    No full text
Racial discrimination, colonialism, marginalization, and imperial politics are the components of Martinican author Suzanne Lacascade's 1924 novel, Claire-Solange, âme africaine . This little-known work is shrouded in mystery. Less information is available about the author or under what circumstances she conceptualized and completed her novel. Lacascade probably contributed to various reviews and journals of the first days of the Négritude movement. The novel offers one of the first discourses on race, racial mixing, hierarchy, and colonialism as construed by blacks and whites. The author defies the power of men over women in French society of the early twentieth century. Racialized parameters are synthesized, most significantly, through the protagonist Claire-Solange's views and opinions on, two environments: the first is France, whose language she speaks fluently but in which she feels foreign; and the second African, a mythical place to which she is drawn due to her African ancestry filtered through her island home of Martinique. The author offers her readers a window on the life of a mulatta woman who is caught in the middle of white and black, forced, in the end, to live in a French, beige in-between, forever considered an étrangère because of her color

Parables and Fables for Modern Man, Vol. IV

Encouraged by the success of his 1988 book of the same title (see my 1990 copy published in England), Ribes prepared a few volumes more. Here in the fourth volume, he writes, we will find parables and stories bearing mainly on social and justice values. The more elaborate format of the first volume has been reduced here. Now a story text, regularly shorter here than those there, is followed by a set of discussion questions and perhaps a set of ideas helpful for discussion. There are again thirty stories. The length of the book has been reduced from the 168 pages in Volume 1 to 128 pages here. Among the first five stories, I appreciate Be Kind to the Cows (17), borrowed from Tolstoy. A man fences cattle in and has to supply them with grass and water, which are plentiful outside the fence. Many of the cows die. He is asked why he does not just let them go free outside the fence. His answer: But then I would not be able to milk them!Fourth printingPeter Ribes, S.J

The digital world as an enabler of Englishlanguage teaching

The purpose of this article is to present a critical reflection that exposes both benefits and challenges of the use of technological resources for the teaching of English as a language, focusing specifically on those of a socio-economic nature. This reflection is based not only on the need to qualify all the advantages that are pointed out, but also to delve a little deeper in light of the evident difference in the literature on the relevance given to the benefits, in contrast to that given to the limitations. Without pretending to indicate that the challenges exceed the advantages, less interest is identified in the state of the art in this regard, and especially in the social challenges of the educational context for the application of this type of resources
