The Effects of Stock Repurchases on Rival Firms.
This paper investigates the stock price behavior of rival firms in the same industry as firms announcing stock repurchase tender offers. Using a sample of 134 repurchase announcements, the author finds that rival firms on average realize insignificant announcement-period abnormal returns. Negative rival stock price performance is detected over longer intervals surrounding the announcement period and for a subset of announcements which ex ante were identified as most likely to affect rivals. This evidence, however, is statistically weak and does little to alter the overall conclusion that the information in repurchase announcements is primarily firm-specific. Male guppies change courtship behaviour in response to their own quality relative to that of a rival male
Compared with female mate choice, male mate choice has been an important but minor topic in the past two decades. In the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, a male approaching a female abandons his courtship when a rival male appears next to the focal female; however, the effect of the relative quality of the males on this behavioural change is unknown. We show here that male guppies abandon their approach to a female only when the rival male is phenotypically superior. Both natural and artificially induced brightly coloured males continued to approach a female even when the rival male was brightly coloured, but both natural and induced dull-coloured males abandoned their approach to a female when the rival was brightly coloured. Males decided their behaviours on the basis of their own appearance, not on their genotypes, because artificially induced brightly and dull- coloured brothers differed in their behaviour. Our results show that male mate choice behaviour is finely tuned to maximize the probability of acceptance by the approached female. (C) 2016 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. The Mahalanobis distance based rival penalized competitive learning algorithm
The rival penalized competitive learning (RPCL) algorithm has been developed to make the clustering analysis on a set of sample data in which the number of clusters is unknown, and recent theoretical analysis shows that it can be constructed by minimizing a special kind of cost function on the sample data. In this paper, we use the Mahalanobis distance instead of the Euclidean distance in the cost function computation and propose the Mahalanobis distance based rival penalized competitive learning (MDRPCL) algorithm. It is demonstrated by the experiments that the MDRPCL algorithm can be successful to determine the number of elliptical clusters in a data set and lead to a good classification result.Computer Science, Artificial IntelligenceComputer Science, Theory & MethodsSCI(E)EICPCI-S(ISTP)
Cosmological constraints with clustering-based redshifts
We demonstrate that observations lacking reliable redshift information, such as photometric and radio continuum surveys, can produce robust measurements of cosmological parameters when empowered by clustering-based redshift estimation. This method infers the redshift distribution based on the spatial clustering of sources, using cross-correlation with a reference data set with known redshifts. Applying this method to the existing Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometric galaxies, and projecting to future radio continuum surveys, we show that sources can be efficiently divided into several redshift bins, increasing their ability to constrain cosmological parameters. We forecast constraints on the dark-energy equation of state and on local non-Gaussianity parameters. We explore several pertinent issues, including the tradeoff between including more sources and minimizing the overlap between bins, the shot-noise limitations on binning and the predicted performance of the method at high redshifts, and most importantly pay special attention to possible degeneracies with the galaxy bias. Remarkably, we find that once this technique is implemented, constraints on dynamical dark energy from the SDSS imaging catalogue can be competitive with, or better than, those from the spectroscopic BOSS survey and even future planned experiments. Further, constraints on primordial non- Gaussianity from future large-sky radio-continuum surveys can outperform those from the Planck cosmic microwave background experiment and rival those from future spectroscopic galaxy surveys. The application of this method thus holds tremendous promise for cosmology

Dalam skripsi ini, penulis membahas jenis kepribadian narsisistik, konflik – konflik yang dihadapi. dengan orang – orang disekitarnya maupun dengan dirinya sendiri, serta berakhirnya obsesi untuk pengendalian dari tokoh bernama Eve Blackwell dalam novel berjudul Master of the Game karya Sidney Sheldon. Keinginan si tokoh untuk memenangkan perhatian sang nenek dari saudari kembarnya berkembang menjadi keinginan akan kepuasan lahir dan batin dengan mengendalikan orang – orang disekitarnya termasuk dalam hubungan seks. Tujuan penulisan skripsi ini adalah untuk memaparkan usaha – usaha Eve Blackwell, dalam novel Master of the Game karya Sidney Sheldon, untuk mengendalikan orang – orang disekitarnya, konflik – konflik yang dihadapinya dan juga akhir dari obsesi akan kendalinya.
Untuk menganalisis tokoh ini, penulis menggunakan metode pendekatan struktural dan psikologis dengan menggabungkan teori narsisisme dari Joanna M. Ashmun dan teori obsesi dari S. Rachman. Penulis mengumpulkan data – data yang dibutuhkan dengan menggunakan metode penelitian pustaka.
Setelah melakukan analisis yang ditunjang oleh data - data, kita dapat mengetahui bahwa orang berkepribadian narsisistik seperti tokoh Eve Blackwell , yang kekuatan utamanya ada pada parasnya yang cantik, dapat menghalalkan segala cara untuk mewujudkan keinginannya. Namun dalam usaha – usahanya tersebut muncul berbagai bentuk perlawanan yang akan berujung pada konflik, baik internal maupun eksternal. Di bagian akhir analisis, kita juga dapat mengetahui bahwa dominasi orang berkepribadian narsisistik dapat dihentikan oleh kemunculan orang yang tepat seperti Keith Webster, yang berprofesi sebagai dokter operasi plastik, di waktu yang tepat

The Periodogram of fractional processes.
We analyse asymptotic properties of the discrete Fourier transform and the periodogram of time series obtained through (truncated) linear filtering of stationary processes. The class of filters contains the fractional differencing operator and its coefficients decay at an algebraic rate, implying long-range-dependent properties for the filtered processes when the degree of integration α is positive. These include fractional time series which are nonstationary for any value of the memory parameter (α ≠ 0) and possibly nonstationary trending (α ≥ 0.5). We consider both fractional differencing or integration of weakly dependent and long-memory stationary time series. The results obtained for the moments of the Fourier transform and the periodogram at Fourier frequencies in a degenerating band around the origin are weaker compared with the stationary nontruncated case for α > 0, but sufficient for the analysis of parametric and semiparametric memory estimates. They are applied to the study of the properties of the log-periodogram regression estimate of the memory parameter α for Gaussian processes, for which asymptotic normality could not be showed using previous results. STRAIGHT LINE DETECTION VIA RIVAL PENALIZED COMPETITIVE LEARNING
In this paper, rival penalized competitive learning (RPCL) algorithms are adopted to solve the straight line detection problem. In order to improve the performance of the distance sensitive RPCL (DSRPCL) algorithm on straight line detection, the cost function is modified.
