This paper aims to identify Dostoevskian themes and references in the novel Maudit soit Dostoïevski by the Afghan writer Atiq Rahimi. The novel is set in Afghanistan, materially and culturally destroyed by the civil war broken out after the withdrawal of the Soviet army. The plot and plurality of voices embodied by the main character (and narrator) present interesting references and quotations from Crime and Punishment in Rahimi’s novel
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
A escritura visual de Atiq Rahimi: entre guerras e corpos
In 2000, the first work of fiction by Atiq Rahimi, Terre et cendres was published; in 2011, Maudit soit Dostoïevski. In the first stage, the wandering of an old man and his grandson for Afghan lands devastated by the war against the Soviets; in the second, another wandering, that of a young Afghan man by a Kabul immersed in civil war after the withdrawal of Soviet troops. The objective here is to enunciate some notes on a dry, rough, stripped writing, which is made visual along with the displacement of subjects immersed in the horrors of wars.
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
High-Efficiency SiGe-BiCMOS E-Band Power Amplifiers Exploiting Current Clamping in the Common-Base Stage
This paper proposes high-efficiency E-band power amplifiers (PAs) in SiGe-BiCMOS based on a common-base output stage. A comparison between common-emitter and commonbase configurations proves the latter yields higher output power, enhanced linear range, and robustness against self-heating issues. Furthermore, the base-emitter junction of the BJT in common base can be exploited to implement the current-mode version of the well-known diode voltage clamper, so that the dc current tracks the signal current. This yields an improvement of efficiency, particularly in power back-off. Two PA designs are described: a single-path, two-stage amplifier and a second version delivering higher output power with transformer-based power combining at minimal efficiency degradation. At 80 GHz, the two PAs deliver 18- and 20.5-dBm OP1 dB and 19- and 21.5-dBm Psat. The PAE at OP1 dB is 22% and 20%; at 6-dB back-off, it is still 8.5% and 7.2%, respectively. The prototypes demonstrate two-three times higher PAE compared to previously reported silicon PAs with similar output power at the E-band
The Evolution of EU Asylum Policy. ZEI Discussion Papers C. 142, 2005
[From the Introduction]. The Single European Act (SEA) began a process that has evolved into a truly borderless Europe for some years. While it is now much easier for citizens to move freely in this new area, it became necessary to find an effective way to keep third country nationals out. What had began as a patchwork of intergovernmental agreements has gradually evolved into a Europe-wide asylum acquis, recently culminating in a May 2004 breakthrough where ministers forged the basis of a Europe-wide common asylum policy. The development of the asylum acquis, however, took place alongside a considerable shift in the perception of asylum seekers in Europe. Those who were once seen in the post-war era as victims and even heroes have now become largely a security problem on the same levels as illegal migrants. Since the 1970s, there has been a drive towards the politicization of all migrants as a challenge to the protection of national identity and welfare provisions. This view is an outgrowth of the efforts of, inter alia, police, customs agents, social movements, and radical parties of the right. This paper will trace the development of asylum policy with regard to the European integration process and its transformation from a national concern to a European one. An examination of the forces behind the current shape of EU asylum policy will then be discussed, followed by an examination of asylum policy transfer during enlargement and some recommendations
Author, publisher and bookseller : a tripartite synergy in Nigerian book industry
This work is about the roles of Author, Publisher and Bookseller in Book development in
Nigeria. The paper started by delving into the history of Book Publishing in Nigeria after
which it proceeded by defining who an author, a publisher, and a bookseller is and
expatiated on the indispensable roles of these key actors in Nigerian Book Industry and in
the emerging Information Society. Furthermore, the various constraints to book
development were identified while the paper advised on how the Book Industry can be
further promoted in Nigeria. However, the paper concluded and made recommendations
on how the Book sector can help in enhancing scholarship in the country
