In sports, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) affected variables such as training, recovery or athletes’ sleep quality, uncertainty about the future generating distress and anxiety in athletes. There are two cognitive purpose of the current study: knowledge about the subjectively experienced stress in martial arts athletes from selected Europe Union countries during the 4th wave of the pandemic; and knowledge of the likely of using coping strategies, and if so, with what frequenc

Study Regarding Communication and Styles of Approaching Conflict in Athletes

    No full text
AbstractThe purpose of this study is to investigate the assertive, aggressive, manipulative and nonassertive communication styles and the five styles of approaching conflict: gain-loss, loss-leave, loss-stay, compromise and the gain-gain style, in athletes and non-practitioners. The analysis of data highlights significant differences under a statistical report for the aggressive communication style and for the gain-loss style used to solve conflicts. The 36 subjects who practice sports in which the report between the athletes is with direct contact – karate, kempo, taekwondo, handball, football – have shown an aggressive attitude and a gain-loss approach of solving conflicts, compared with the 36 non-practitioners

Background: Individual differences in personality and resilience are related to a variety of social behaviors. The current study sought to answer the question of whether BMW drivers exhibit different personality profiles and resilience levels compared with drivers of other car brands. Participants and procedure: An international study was carried out in India, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Spain on a sample of 448 athletes using the 20-item Mini-IPIP and the Resilience Scale. The results of BMW drivers (n = 91) were compared with the results of drivers of other German car brands (n = 357). Results: BMW drivers were characterized by higher neuroticism compared with drivers of other German car brands. They also showed higher resiliency, both in terms of total score and scores on the subscales of: personal coping competences and tolerance of negative emotions, tolerance of failures and perceiving life as a challenge, and optimistic attitude towards life and capacity for self-mobilization in difficult situations. The greatest difference was observed for the factor of tolerance of failures and perceiving life as a challenge. Using the Dwass-Steel-Critchlow-Fligner (DSCF) pairwise comparison test, gender differences between athletes (as BMW drivers and drivers of other German car brands, respectively) were discussed. Additionally, the results of the main logistic regression analyses emphasized that neuroticism represents a better predictor of BMW preference in the case of athletes (as drivers) than the scores obtained for resilience. Conclusions: BMW drivers differed from drivers of other German car brands only with regard to neuroticism. A higher level of neuroticism can affect mental health and the overall quality of life in athletes; aggression and distress management are essential. Athletes (as BMW drivers) also showed differences in resiliency levels. Understanding the mechanisms of behavior among BMW drivers is possible through considering their personality and individual differences

Intersegmental and Eye-hand Coordination in Elite Junior Tennis Players

AbstractThe purpose of this study consists of analyzing the existing correlations between the eye-hand coordination, intersegmental coordination and sports performance. The TUD and RCMV tests, included into the PSISELTEVA battery, developed by RQ Plus, evaluates the intersegmental and the eye-hand coordination, expressed through some psychomotor-related parameters. The subjects who took part in this study are 12 elite junior tennis players. Using the Spearman correlation there have been important relations highlighted between the resistance to disruptive factors when performing intersegmental movements, the eye-hand coordination under fast speed conditions and the sports performance, expressed through the ranking position (the official ranking system)

AbstractThe purpose of this study consists of analyzing the existing correlations between the topographical memory, the concentration of attention under slow and fast speed conditions and the sports performance of the top junior female tennis players. The MT and TAC computerized tests, included into the PSISELTEVA battery, developed by RQ Plus, evaluates the topographical memory and the concentration of attention, expressed through specific parameters. The subjects who took part in this study are 8 junior female tennis players, taking part of the elite of the Romanian and of the European players. Using the Spearman correlation there have been important relations highlighted between the topographical memory coefficient, the concentration of attention under fast speed conditions and the sports performance, expressed through the ranking position (the official ranking system)

Resilience and Subjectively Experienced Stress Among Paramedics Prior to and During the COVID-19 Pandemic

IntroductionParamedics play a vital role in the healthcare system by providing professional support in situations of direct threat to patient health and life. They experience numerous difficulties during their work, which result in occupational stress. During the COVID-19 pandemic, their work has become even more demanding. The aim of the current study was to examine the role of resilience in the subjective experience of stress among paramedics during the COVID-19 pandemic.Materials and methodsThe study was carried out in two phases, in October-November 2019 (N = 75) and in May-June 2020 (N = 84), using the Sense of Stress Questionnaire (Skala Poczucia Stresu) and the Resilience Scale (Skala Pomiaru Prężności).ResultsParamedics exhibited higher intrapsychic stress before the COVID-19 pandemic. Tolerance of failure and treating life as a challenge were higher during the pandemic, in contrast to optimism and the ability to mobilize in difficult situations. Paramedics who were in contact with patients with COVID-19 experienced higher stress. Perseverance and determination, openness to new experiences and sense of humor, as well as competences and tolerance of negative emotions were revealed to play a key part in mitigating subjectively experienced stress.ConclusionParamedics’ subjectively experienced stress was lower during the COVID-19 pandemic. Paramedics who were in direct contact with patients with COVID-19 experienced higher stress. They had sufficient psychological resources, in the form of resilience (perseverance and determination, openness to new experiences, sense of humor, and competences and tolerance of negative emotions), which allowed them to cope with the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic

The quality of life of individuals, groups and communities depends on many factors, starting with what each person and family undertake, continuing with the interventions at the community level and ending with the public policy measures. Purpose: This study makes a quantitative and qualitative analysis of overall quality of life as perceived by young people who practice sports, and it also highlights the differences in perception of the quality of life among youth, according to gender and the sport practiced (individual or team sport), for the 16 life domains. Methods: The participants were 69 athletes. Quality of life has been measured using the Quality of Life Inventory (QoLI) for Romania, developed by Michael B. Frisch. Results: After processing the data, it has been found that the highest weighted satisfaction is obtained for Goals and Values, Play, Health and Self-Esteem, and the lowest satisfaction is recorded for Children, Money, Community and Neighborhood. Statistical processing also reveals an average overall quality of life for the study participants, regardless of gender and the practiced sport. Conclusions: It has been concluded that the influence of practicing individual sports on the overall quality of life for the participants in the study is at a higher level than in team sports.</jats:p
