Processing of UV-induced DNA damage in human skin cells
It was the aim of the experimental work presented in this thesis to identify -in
mammalian cells- the lesions responsible for UV-induced biological effects, such as cell-killing, to study the relation between the removal of lesions and the occurrence of repair synthesis of DNA ("unscheduled DNA synthesis") and to investigate the possible role and practical significance of photoreactivation in human
Gledališki eksperiment na Slovenskem (1966–1986) in njegovi odmevi v mladinski dramatiki – Andrej Rozman Roza
In Slovenian (youth) literature, three authors who have worked in the field of drama and/or theatre stand out – namely, Svetlana Makarovič, academically trained actress (Sapramiška), Milan Jesih (Four Plays for Children, adaptations of Andersen’s fairy tales The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Ugly Duckling) and Andrej Rozman Roza. The paper will focus on the latter, who was strongly influenced by the theatre experiment in Slovenia, especially during the formative period of his studies of the Slovenian language (1974–1978). Andrej Rozman Roza (1956) started performing and/or publishing plays in the period 1981– 1990 (Inspector Schwake, 1986; collection of texts Ana Monró Theatre, 1991, etc.). He is known in literary history as a youth poet and is included in Slovenian language curricula (1998, 2011, 2018). However, the definition of a systemic author is more appropriate for him (I. Even Zohar, M. Dović) since of the six functions in the literary system (author, institution, market, repertoire, book, reader) he holds at least three roles (author, “institution”, book [living book], etc.). This paper focuses on adaptations of classics of Slovenian (Cankar, Levstik, Linhart, Prešeren, etc.) or world literature that – regardless of literary genre or type – have become crossover literature in the process of literary reception, especially in picture-book editions (e.g., A Midsummer Night’s Dream which has the international fairy tale type number ATU 899A [Pyramus and Thisbe]). According to B. Kümmerling-Meibauer’s definition of crossover classics or authorship, Rozman is a crossover author. In addition, according to L. Hutcheon’s theory, adaptations are an important part of Rozman’s work and contribute to the updating of classics and modern classics. The paper presents the collection Brvi čez morje (The Footbridge Across the Sea), which contains thirteen plays, three of which are folktale texts – Janko and Metka (Hansel and Gretel) [ATU 327], Obuti maček (Puss in Boots) [ATU 545B], Vžigalnik (The Tinderbox) [ATU 562] – and one which is a fairy tale, Kekec [ATU 1137]). Intertextually, they refer to folktale types.V slovenski (mladinski) književnosti izstopajo trije avtorji, ki so se ukvarjali z dramatiko in/ali gledališčem: to so Svetlana Makarovič, diplomirana igralka (npr. Sapramiška), Milan Jesih (Štiri igre za otroke, priredbe Andersenovih pravljic Cesarjeva nova oblačila in Grdi raček) in Andrej Rozman Roza.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Inhibition of NETs-associated ARG1 enhances the efficacy of anti-cancer immunotherapeutic approaches
Despite the progress in the field of the cancer immunotherapy, the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) remains a huge problem-to-besolved nowadays. Among other key components, infiltrated myeloid cells in the TME can suppress anti-tumor immunity exploiting various mechanisms. L-arginine degradation from the extracellular milieu by arginase 1 (ARG1) is a notorious immunosuppressive mechanism. Although, huge effort has been made for the development of effective chemical inhibitors against ARG1, differences in ARG1 biology among species could restrain the successful translation of experimental model results in the clinical practice. In our study, we have demonstrated that ARG1 is present in neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) released by stimulated polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs), where it is cleaved by the cysteine protease cathepsin S (CTSS). This cleavage generated two truncated forms of lower molecular weight and unleashed ARG1 enzymatic activity at physiological pH. Subsequently, ARG1 enhanced activity resulted in the arrest of T lymphocytes proliferation. We have developed a neutralizing monoclonal antibody against ARG1, which efficiently blocked ARG1 activity, while the commercially available ARG1 inhibitors were unable to restore T cells proliferation when the cleaved forms were present. In patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), neutrophils and CD14+ARG1+ cells released NETs-related ARG1 endowed with increased activity, due to CTSS cleavage, and administration of the ARG1 neutralizing antibody blocked its inhibitory function. ARG1 blockade in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in ex vivo PDAC tumors enhanced the efficacy of immunotherapy through increased activation of T lymphocytes, while combinatory treatment of tumor-bearing humanized mice with adoptive cell therapy (ACT) and ARG1 neutralizing antibody increased T cells infiltration in the tumor tissues and attenuated tumor growth

Square Dancing with the Stars to Enhance Dynamic Hirschman Linkages?
In this Presidential Address, the author takes the reader on a reconnaissance of his life and time as a regional scientist. He points out scenery he found scintillating along the way, hoping that some may pick up the banner and chew on a few of the ideas for a while. He suggests a revisit to Albert O. Hirschman’s notion of key sectors and more empirical analysis related to Marcus Berliant’s and Masahisa Fujita’s notion of knowledge creation and transfer.Presidential Address, San Antonio, Texas, March 29, 2014 (53rd Meetings of the Southern Regional Science Association
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
