    This study aimed to (1) describe the Linggau tribal marriage ceremony, and (2) analyze the local wisdom contained in the Linggau tribal marriage ceremony with a descriptive method based on a qualitative approach. The data source was a traditional marriage ceremony that developed among the Linggau tribe community. Data and information were collected from informants who know the ins and outs of the marriage ceremony of the Linggau tribe, Ona (75 years) who is a traditional figure who resides in the Batu Batu Urip Taba, Lubuk Linggau. Data collection was obtained from the results of listening and taking notes and recording. In addition, unstructured interviews were also used to further explore the traditional ceremonies of the Lubuk Linggau tribe. The method used in this research was the descriptive method

    PLEONASM IN THE TV SERIES THE WALKING DEAD

    This study aimed at finding and identifying the types and functions of pleonasms occurred in the TV series The Walking Dead. The object of this study was the 10 episodes of The Walking Dead from season 7. This is a qualitative descriptive research, since it involves the utterances of characters in the film that need to be summarized and described. The data were collected using the documentation technique. Some steps were taken in the process of collecting and analyzing the data, such as extracting the subtitles, watching the series, converting, printing and reading the subtitles, finding and marking the pleonastic expressions, and identifying the types, the sub-types, and the functions of pleonasms. 165 pleonastic expressions were found in the series. Out of 165.89 (54%) is syntactic pleonasms, and 76 (46%) is semantic pleonasms. A total of 97 (59%) pleonastic expressions function were highly to emphasize or intensify the expressions, which holds the majority

    Abstract: The objectives of this study were to find out derivational morphemes used in the articles of Reuters, their types and patterns. Descriptive approach was used in this study. Greenbaum’s and Fromkin’s theory were used in finding the types and the patterns of derivational morphemes. The result of the study showed that the constructions of verb bases are used to create noun forms especially abstract nouns. There were 235 types of derivational morphemes: 35 (14.89%) were prefixes and 200 (85.10%) were suffixes. Types of prefixes were supportive and opposing, reservative and deprivative, negative, pejorative, place, time, status, number, and miscellaneous prefixes. The types of suffixes were verb, adjective, concrete nouns, abstract nouns, and adverb suffixes. There were 221 patterns of derived words found in the study.   Keywords: Morphology, Derivational Morphemes, and Reuters.   Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan jenis dari morfem derivasional yang digunakan pada artikel koran online Reuter, dan pola mereka. Metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif digunakan pada penilitian ini. Teori Greenbaum dan Fromkin digunakan untuk mengetahui jenis dan pola morfem derivasional. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kata kerja dasar digunakan untuk membentuk kata benda, khususnya nomina abstrak. Ada 235 jenis morfem derivasional yang ditemukan. 35 (14.89%) adalah prefiks dan 200 (85.10%) adalah sufiks. Jenis prefiks mencakup prefiks berlawanan dan suportif, deprivasi dan kebalikan, negatif, pejoratif, kedudukan, waktu, status, angka, campuran. Sedangkan, jenis sufiks mencakup sufiks kata kerja, kata sifat, nomina konkrit, nomina abstrak, dan kata keterangan.     THE CORRELATION BETWEEN WATCHING MOVIE WITH SUBTITLES AND STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY AT UNIVERSITAS BINA DARMA

    The aim of the research was to find out the correlation between watching movies with subtitles and students’ vocabulary mastery as well as to find out students’ perspectives that affect watching movies with subtitles and vocabulary mastery at Universitas Bina Darma. A quantitative method was used in this research. The instruments of the research were the vocabulary test and questionnaire. The samples were 60 students of the Information System Study Program Universitas Bina Darma. The samples were chosen by using the purposive sampling technique. The data were analyzed manually by using Product Moment Formula and recalculated by using Product Moment Formula from SPSS 20 Version (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). The result of the analysis showed that there was a positive medium correlation between watching movies with subtitles and students’ vocabulary mastery

    SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS ON WEIGHT LOSS PRODUCT ADVERTISEMENTS

    The objectives of this study were to find outthe types of semiotic signs, the verbal and visual meanings of these signs, and the relationship among verbal and visual signs used in weight loss product ads. Qualitative method with descriptive approach was used in this study. 10 weight loss product ads were used in this study. There are icons, indexes, and symbols found in this study. There are 10 icons (100%), 7 indexes (70%), and 4 symbols (40%). Peirce’s theory was used in finding the types of semiotics in this study, and Saussure’s theory was used in finding the verbal and visual meanings as well as its relationship among them. The result of the study shows that the verbal and visual signs are used to create clear meanings and both of them have strong relationship in delivering messages of the products.Key words : Semiotic, Weight Loss Product Advertisements, and Verbal and Visual Signs

    Abstract :Oral literature is one of the most important part in the existence of regional literature, including the province of South Sumatra. However, this type of literature began to be less enjoyed because it is considered outdated and not in accordance with the tastes of today\u27s society. Not surprisingly, the number of its lovers began to decrease and leaving only the old people. This research highlights about oral literature Berejung owned by Besemah tribe of Pagaralam, South Sumatera which experienced the same thing. The aim is to see the dynamics of change or transition of the oral literature Berejung from the first to present form of presentation. Sources of data were obtained by using direct observation methods and interviews with related parties, such as speakers and art activists. The results of field research indicate that oral literature Berejung has undergone several transitions from spoken directly through the mouth, followed by the lute and the sole guitar and the last in a musical orchestra

    The aim of this study is to analyze the main character’s mental state in the movie The Uninvited using the theory of psyche and defense mechanism. This study used descriptive method. The first step of analyzing The Uninvited movie was observing the main character’s mental state from the beginning until the end of the story, determining the cause of the main character’s unstable mental state by using Freud’s psyche theory through the character’s dialogues and certain scenes, determining types of defense mechanisms deployed by the main character in the movie, the last is interpreting how the main character’s mental state affects the plot of the movie. The results of this study are the writer found three factors that trigger the unstable mental states; six types of defense mechanism the main character deployed, and the impact of the main character’s mental state

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
