Energy consumption and thermal comfort in university campus: a benchmarking proposal

    No full text
Benchmarking is a tool used for comparing energy consumption between a group of similar buildings or the same building over time. It is applicable for increasing transparency regarding energy management and the development of policies for energy efficiency. However, in buildings with predominance of natural ventilation, as Brazilian Public Universities, the EUI evaluation may not be sufficient to indicate the efficiency of the buildings in use, given that there is the possibility of occurrence of thermal discomfort. Therefore, the goal of this thesis is to develop an internal benchmarking system of university campus buildings based on electricity consumption and thermal comfort. The buildings of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, in Belo Horizonte, were used as a case study. EUI was considered as the metric for energy consumption analysis. The Percentage Occupied of Hours in Comfort (POHC) and the Degrees of Heat (DHH) were used as metrics related to thermal comfort. A EUI database of 110 buildings was built and focus was directed to 27 buildings of Academic Units, for which architectural characteristics were also raised. The thermal comfort of naturally ventilated classroom environments was analyzed from the development of archetypes and parametric computer simulations of 55 thousand scenarios with the EnergyPlus software. The method of this work, of interdisciplinary character, included the elaboration of four predictive equations via multiple regression models: two equations for the prediction of EUI and two related to thermal comfort, being one for POHC and one for DHH. The equations for EUI were divided for buildings with or without laboratories with high density of installed power. The thermal comfort equations consider the classrooms. A benchmarking was proposed with the classification of buildings on the scale from A to E both for EUI and for thermal comfort. The benchmarking classification was integrated by a matrix which generated classifications in levels “Good”, “Medium”, “Poor” and “Very poor”. The developed equations presented R² from 0.93 to 0.97. It was found that 29% of the analyzed buildings are in the diagnostic zone "Good", 53% in "Medium" and 18% in "Poor". No Academic Unit was classified as “Very poor”. It is expected that this diagnosis can be used to support the prioritization of retrofit measures. Author considers that for buildings of hybrid conditioning or with natural ventilation it is essential to include the indication of thermal comfort in a benchmarking process.

Multidrug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa survey in a stream receiving effluents from ineffective wastewater hospital plants

    No full text
Background: Multi-drug resistant forms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDRPA) are a major source of nosocomial infections and when discharged into streams and rivers from hospital wastewater treatment plants (HWWTP) they are known to be able to persist for extended periods. In the city of Manaus (Western Brazilian Amazon), the effluent of three HWWTPs feed into the urban Mindu stream which crosses the city from its rainforest source before draining into the Rio Negro. The stream is routinely used by Manaus residents for bathing and cleaning (of clothes as well as domestic utensils) and, during periods of flooding, can contaminate wells used for drinking water. Results: 16S rRNA metagenomic sequence analysis of 293 cloned PCR fragments, detected an abundance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) at the stream's Rio Negro drainage site, but failed to detect it at the stream's source. An array of antimicrobial resistance profiles and resistance to all 14 tested antimicrobials was detected among P. aeruginosa cultures prepared from wastewater samples taken from water entering and being discharged from a Manaus HWWTP. Just one P. aeruginosa antimicrobial resistance profile, however, was detected from cultures made from Mindu stream isolates. Comparisons made between P. aeruginosa isolates' genomic DNA restriction enzyme digest fingerprints, failed to determine if any of the P. aeruginosa found in the Mindu stream were of HWWTP origin, but suggested that Mindu stream P. aeruginosa are from diverse origins. Culturing experiments also showed that P. aeruginosa biofilm formation and the extent of biofilm formation produced were both significantly higher in multi drug resistant forms of P. aeruginosa. Conclusions: Our results show that a diverse range of MDRPA are being discharged in an urban stream from a HWWTP in Manaus and that P. aeruginosa strains with ampicillin and amikacin can persist well within it. © 2016 The Author(s)

How "Chicagoan" are Gary Becker's Economic Models of Marriage?

    No full text
This paper describes Gary Becker’s theoretical models of marriage. At the micro-level, these are all rational choice models. At the market level, Becker offers two major types of models: partial equilibrium models based on Price Theory as taught by Marshall and Friedman and optimal sorting models based on optimal assignment models. The paper examines some of the possible intellectual influences on Becker’s theory of marriage, compares Becker’s research on marriage with that of some scholars interested in intra-marriage distribution, and documents that Becker’s students at Chicago were more interested in Becker’s Friedmanian models of marriage than in his optimal assignment models.

This thesis tries to configure the space occupied by literature in Revista USP magazine, starting from the reflection about the art produced in the 80's and 90's. The popular music, the theater and the movies are submitted to an evaluation of their recent creations while the literature does not receive the same kind of critical approach. Investigating motivations and consequences of this attitude is the main proposition of this research, which intends to develop the following hypothesis: a great amount of texts published in Revista USP composes a mosaic, in which the reflection about Brazilian literature configures itself through the constitution of a monumental axle, formed by Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas, written by Machado de Assis and Grande sertão: veredas, by João Guimarães Rosa. These books mark and support the limits of the canon proposed by the magazine, which considers Guimarães Rosa's narrative as the last sign of creativity in Brazilian literature. Although, it's possible to perceive some shadows that disturb the clearness of this axle. The first one is Grande sertão: veredas seen as a "neobarroco" text, and the second is an anthology of Brazilian poetry published at Universidad de México magazine

Age And Origin Of The Neoproterozoic Brauna Kimberlites: Melt Generation Within The Metasomatized Base Of The São Francisco Craton, Brazil

    No full text
The diamondiferous Brauna kimberlite field is situated in the northeast part of the São Francisco craton, Bahia State, Brazil, and ongoing exploration revealed three complex pipe-like bodies and nineteen dykes oriented along a N30W trend. Uranium-Pb perovskite age determinations of hypabyssal kimberlite material yielded a high-precision emplacement age of 642. ±. 6. Ma (2-sigma uncertainty). This age provides the first evidence for Neoproterozoic kimberlite magmatism in Brazil, and the Brauna kimberlites thus represent the oldest known primary source of diamonds in the São Francisco craton.Primary kimberlite mineralogy at Brauna comprises olivine, spinel, ilmenite, phlogopite, perovskite, apatite, as well as late-stage serpentine and carbonate. Furthermore, abundant olivine, Cr-diopside, and pyrope garnet xenocrysts are present. The most common xenoliths are wall-rock granodiorites, mantle eclogites and peridotites. The Brauna kimberlites do not fit into the classic subdivision of kimberlites and orangeites (formerly Group-II kimberlites) based on South African type occurrences. Their geochemical and isotopic signatures, with negative initial εNd values of -5.8 to -8.1 and variably enriched 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7045-0.7063), suggest that Brauna kimberlite magmas were derived from a mantle source region that was strongly metasomatized prior to kimberlite magmatism at ~642Ma. In particular, the incompatible element distribution suggests that Brauna kimberlite magmas originate from the metasomatized base of the São Francisco craton, with only minor input from the convecting upper mantle. The Brauna kimberlites mineralogically and geochemically resemble the slightly older "anomalous" mica kimberlites from Guaniamo in Venezuela (712±6Ma). This may suggest that both mica-rich kimberlite occurrences formed from similarly enriched subcratonic mantle lithosphere during Late Neoproterozoic extensional tectonics related to the breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.3531935Araújo, A.L.N., Carlson, R.W., Gaspar, J.C., Bizzi, L.A., Petrology of kamafugites and kimberlites from the Alto Paranaíba Alkaline Province, Minas Gerais, Brazil (2001) Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology, 142, pp. 163-177Barbosa, J.S.F., Sabaté, P., Archean and Paleoproterozoic crust of the São Francisco Craton, Bahia, Brazil: geodynamic features (2004) Precambrian Research, 133, pp. 1-27Bardet, M.G., Géologie du diamant (1977) Memoires Du BRGM, p. 177Beard, A.D., Downes, H., Hegner, E., Sablukov, S.M., Geochemistry and mineralogy of kimberlites from the Arkhangelsk Region, NW Russia: evidence for transitional kimberlite magma types (2000) Lithos, 51, pp. 47-73Becker, M., Le Roex, A.P., Geochemistry of South African on- and off craton, group I and group II kimberlites: petrogenesis and source region evolution (2006) Journal of Petrology, 47, pp. 673-703Becker, M., Le Roex, A.P., Geochemistry and petrogenesis of South African transitional kimberlites located on and off the Kaapvaal Craton (2007) South African Journal of Geology, 110, pp. 631-646Beyer, C., Berndt, J., Tappe, S., Klemme, S., Trace element partitioning between perovskite and kimberlite to carbonatite melt: New experimental constraints (2013) Chemical Geology, 353, pp. 133-140. , (this issue)Bizzi, L.A., Smith, C.R., Meyer, H.O.A., Armstrong, R., de Wit, M.J., Mesozoic kimberlites and related rocks in southwestern São Francisco craton, Brazil: a case for local mantle reservoirs and their interaction (1993) Special Publication 2/91, pp. 156-171. , H.O.A.
