    Audrey Heumann Regen \u2756 (BardCorps)

    No full text
Audrey Heumann Regen returned to Bard in 2001 for her 45th reunion. Regan was a high achieving high-school student with a nagging case of test anxiety who came to Bard for its unorthodox philosophy and strong arts curriculum. She remembers Buzz Gummere admitting her because of her wide range of interests. Her senior project advisor was Dorothy Dulles Bourne, and her project focused on the educational theories of John Dewey. She recalls a tradition where Eleanor Roosevelt would come to Bard every Christmas season to read Dickens\u27 A Christmas Carol to the students. One year, a fellow student, a polio survivor, wanted to honor Mrs. Roosevelt by opening the door for her. Audrey remembers this as a poignant moment, watching Mrs. Roosevelt give him time because she knew the effort this took. Regen remembers Bard as a much smaller place, with 250 students and only a few established buildings. She describes the quality as ‘homey’ or ‘hamish’ with students congregating at the little coffee shop in Stone Row. It was a very wholesome and healthy isolation, that you could concentrate without a great many distractions, on your studies. At the same time, she describes Bard\u27s reputation during her day as a wild place, with strange clothing, wild behaviors, and a great deal of sexual experimentation. Campus jobs for Audrey included delivering the mail to faculty, and in one instance, tutoring a professor’s child in reading, Erica DeGre (now Rikki Ducornet). Regen also remembers attending a synagogue in Poughkeepsie for Jewish holidays. Students later decided to hold ceremonies for Jewish High Holy Days on campus. She continues to show support for the college saying: “Bard took a chance on me, and I would always be here for Bard.” Audrey H. Regen passed away on May 30, 2017.https://digitalcommons.bard.edu/oral_hist/1031/thumbnail.jp

    No full text
The study developed in these pages proposes two main objectives: on the one hand, to analyze which are the representations of death found in the poetry of the Argentinian writer Jacobo Regen and, on the other hand, to reconstruct and characterize the cultural subject present in the poetic production of this author. For this purpose, we selected a corpus of poems from his two most recognized books, Canción del angel y otros poemas (1971) and El vendedor de tierra (1984). In these books, the idea of death can be traced at the phenotextual level of the poems through phonic, semantic, and also visuographic aspects. We based on previous studies about the discursive analysis of poetic texts (Bossi, 2001; Guzmán, 2013, 1992; García, 2015; Verdugo 1982), and the socio-critical perspective as a research method (Cros, 1997; 2011). This approach allow us to find a heterogeneous cultural subject, traversed by various ideologies that reveal the presence of multiple ways of representing death in the poetry of the studied author. Among these representations of death, we distinguish one that we call «microsemiotics of transit» which is being built throughout his literary production.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Subcutaneous REGEN-COV Antibody Combination to Prevent Covid-19

BACKGROUND REGEN-COV (previously known as REGN-COV2), a combination of the monoclonal antibodies casirivimab and imdevimab, has been shown to markedly reduce the risk of hospitalization or death among high-risk persons with coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). Whether subcutaneous REGEN-COV prevents severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and subsequent Covid-19 in persons at high risk for infection because of household exposure to a person with SARS-CoV-2 infection is unknown. METHODS We randomly assigned, in a 1:1 ratio, participants (=12 years of age) who were enrolled within 96 hours after a household contact received a diagnosis of SARSCoV- 2 infection to receive a total dose of 1200 mg of REGEN-COV or matching placebo administered by means of subcutaneous injection. At the time of randomization, participants were stratified according to the results of the local diagnostic assay for SARS-CoV-2 and according to age. The primary efficacy end point was the development of symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection through day 28 in participants who did not have SARS-CoV-2 infection (as measured by reverse-transcriptase- quantitative polymerase-chain-reaction assay) or previous immunity (seronegativity). RESULTS Symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection developed in 11 of 753 participants in the REGEN-COV group (1.5%) and in 59 of 752 participants in the placebo group (7.8%) (relative risk reduction [1 minus the relative risk], 81.4%; P<0.001). In weeks 2 to 4, a total of 2 of 753 participants in the REGEN-COV group (0.3%) and 27 of 752 participants in the placebo group (3.6%) had symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection (relative risk reduction, 92.6%). REGEN-COV also prevented symptomatic and asymptomatic infections overall (relative risk reduction, 66.4%). Among symptomatic infected participants, the median time to resolution of symptoms was 2 weeks shorter with REGEN-COV than with placebo (1.2 weeks and 3.2 weeks, respectively), and the duration of a high viral load (>104 copies per milliliter) was shorter (0.4 weeks and 1.3 weeks, respectively). No dose-limiting toxic effects of REGEN-COV were noted. CONCLUSIONS Subcutaneous REGEN-COV prevented symptomatic Covid-19 and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in previously uninfected household contacts of infected persons. Among the participants who became infected, REGEN-COV reduced the duration of symptomatic disease and the duration of a high viral load

(orig.)Heavy metal concentrations in the water, sediments and selected aquatic organisms of the Naab, Regen and Vils rivers were analyzed. Water pollution levels were found to be medium to critical but rarely high, but the water quality should be improved in the interest of fisheries and diversity of species. Pollution sources are sewage plants, discharge of liquid effluents and background pollution. a reduction of the direct and indirect discharge of liquid effluents was found to be the most promising option for reducing pollutant concentrationsSIGLEAvailable from TIB Hannover: F00B1095 / FIZ - Fachinformationszzentrum Karlsruhe / TIB - Technische InformationsbibliothekDEGerman

WHICH CAME FIRST? EGGS AND CHICKEN IN BRAZIL: A NEW STUDY

    No full text
Almost 42 years ago, Thurman e Fisher (1988), in a funny paper, using the Granger causality test, concluded, with American data that eggs Granger-cause chicken. In 2011, Shikida, Araujo Jr and Figueiredo (2011) replicated the test to Brazilian quarterly data (1987.I-2011.I) and found bi-causality. This article uses Brazilian monthly data (1987.1-2020.9) under three alternative versions of the Granger test: the classical Granger-causality test, the Toda-Yamamoto version of the same test and the nonlinear Granger-causality proposed by Vinod (2020a). We found evidence that, for Brazil, the bi-causality still prevails for eggs and chicken

PESQUISA, DESENVOLVIMENTO E INOVAÇÃO NO BRASIL: TRAJETÓRIA RECENTE E DESAFIOS

    No full text
The general objective of the study was to analyze the current scenario of research, development, and innovation (RD&I) in Brazil. To achieve this goal, a bibliographic review and a survey of data on RD&I in Brazil and in the world was carried out. The Brazilian postgraduate system is continually expanding, but it has not yet reached a desirable level when compared to developed countries. In order for RD&I in Brazil to continue to grow sustainably, some actions are necessary: seeking solutions to concrete problems in society, building a long-term strategic agenda, increasing the number of master\u27s and doctoral scholarships offered, increased investments in research and development (R&D) made by the public and private sectors and reduction of regional inequalities in the country. The reduction in the amount of resources allocated to R&D may indicate a setback in relation to the advances achieved in previous years, which is very negative for the country\u27s development. Despite these problems, Brazil has positive characteristics in the field of RD&I: growth in the number of master\u27s and doctoral courses, the increases in the granting of stricto sensu postgraduate degrees and in the number of private master\u27s and doctoral degrees and amount of scholarships awarded for engineering studies. In view of what was exposed in the work, it was possible to conclude that Brazil develops actions in favor of improving the innovation system, but needs to make changes in some crucial aspects in order to continue expanding with quality and in a sustainable manner.: O objetivo do estudo foi analisar o cenário atual de pesquisa, desenvolvimento e inovação (PD&I) no Brasil.
