Several studies about Ramos#s sociological thought have been written in Brazil. The purpose of this dissertation is to be an interpretation to clarify some elements that support the Ramos#s coherence of beliefs in time. This coherence exists in all Ramos#s work, since his juvenile papers until his last book. We believe that our interpretation can be help in the understanding of the reach, of the meaning, and of the final aim of his theoretical work or of his concepts, models, and sociological proposals. Also we believe that our interpretation can help in the understanding of his displacement of concepts and filiations with currents of thought. In this dissertation we demonstrated that there is in the Ramos#s works a strong belief in the urgency of a new humanism, and a new human type, starting from which would be possible to theorize about the individual and associated human life, in others words, a humanism which the man was the measure of everything. An example of this is his concern and presupposition that the society should be structured for the man and not the opposite. With this radical humanist point of view, Ramos revised the man presupposition of the social science of his time, denounced the main social obstacles to the humanization process, and proposed a new science of social. In this way, we affirm that the Ramos#s sociological thought is anthrophocentric

Electrohydrodynamics and dielectrophoresis in microsystems: scaling laws

    No full text
The movement and behaviour of particles suspended in aqueous solutions subjected to non-uniform ac electric fields is examined. The ac electric fields induce movement of polarizable particles, a phenomenon known as dielectrophoresis. The high strength electric fields that are often used in separation systems can give rise to fluid motion, which in turn results in a viscous drag on the particle. The electric field generates heat, leading to volume forces in the liquid. Gradients in conductivity and permittivity give rise to electrothermal forces and gradients in mass density to buoyancy. In addition, non-uniform ac electric fields produce forces on the induced charges in the diffuse double layer on the electrodes. This causes a steady fluid motion termed ac electro-osmosis. The effects of Brownian motion are also discussed in this context. The orders of magnitude of the various forces experienced by a particle in a model microelectrode system are estimated. The results are discussed in relation to experiments and the relative influence of each type of force is described

Application of a classification algorithm to the early-stage damage detection of a masonry arch

The early-stage identification of structural damage still represents a relevant challenge in civil engineering. Localized damages if not readily detected can lead to disruption or even collapse, involving hazard to people and economical losses. Although the final goal of the identification is to localize and quantify the damage, a reliable discrimination between normal and abnormal states of the structure in the very early stage of the damage onset is not an easy task. In the field of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) great attention has been paid to the development of damage detection methods based on continuous and automatic registration of the system response to unknown ambient inputs. The numerical algorithms exploited must be: (1) easy to implement and computationally inexpensive, eventually being embedded in the sensors; (2) as much independent on human decision as possible; (3) robust to the many sources of uncertainties affecting the monitoring; (4) able to detect small damage extents in order to provide an early warning; (5) suitable for the application in the case of few and sparse measurements collected only in the normal condition. The performance of a novel version of Negative Selection Algorithm, recently developed by the authors, is here analyzed with attention to these issues. The algorithm is tested against data collected on a segmental masonry arch built in the laboratory of the University of Minho and subject to progressive lateral displacement of one support

G-quartet-dependent recognition between the FMRP RGG box and RNA

    No full text
Fragile-X syndrome, the most common monogenic form of mental retardation, is caused by down-regulation of the expression of Fragile X Mental Retardation Protein (FMRP). FMRP is a multifunctional, multidomain RNA-binding protein that acts as a translational repressor in neuronal cells. Interaction between FMRP and mRNA targets involves an RGG box, a protein motif commonly thought to mediate unspecific interactions with nucleic acids. Instead, FMRP RGG box has been shown to recognize RNA G-quartet structures specifically and to be necessary in neurons for RNP particle formation and dendritic mRNA localization. In the present study, we have characterized structurally three representative RNA targets of FMRP in their unbound form and in complex with the RGG box. We observe a large heterogeneity in the conformation of the RNA targets and in their RGG binding mode, which could be the basis of recognition specificity. We also found that G-quartet formation occurs not only intramolecularly but can also be mediated by RNA dimerization. These findings suggest a potential role of RNA:RNA interactions in protein:RNA complexes and in RNP particle assembly

The dielectrophoretic and travelling wave forces for interdigitated electrode arrays: analytical solution using Fourier series

    No full text
In alternating current electrokinetics, electric fields are used to generate forces on particles. Techniques have been applied for the manipulation of particles and the measurement of their dielectric properties. The fields are typically generated by microelectrode structures fabricated on planar surfaces. One particular design, using interdigitated bar electrodes, is used both in dielectrophoretic field flow fractionation and travelling wave dielectrophoresis. This paper presents a Fourier series analysis of the dielectrophoretic force on a particle generated by this type of electrode array, for both dielectrophoresis and travelling wave dielectrophoresis. Simple expressions are derived for the force at a distance of the order of the electrode spacing from the electrodes. A full analytical expression is given for the dielectrophoretic force in two dimensions. Comparisons are made with previously published experimental observations
