Evaluation of Marker Tracking Using Mono and Stereo Vision in Microsoft HoloLens for Surgical Navigation
Optical-based navigation systems are widely used in surgical interventions. However, despite their great utility and accuracy, they are expensive and require time and effort to setup for surgeries. Moreover, traditional navigation systems use 2D screens to display instrument positions causing the surgeons to look away from the operative field. Head mounted displays such as the Microsoft HoloLens may provide an attractive alternative for surgical navigation that also permits augmented reality visualization. The HoloLens is equipped with multiple sensors for tracking and scene understanding. Mono and stereo-vision in the HoloLens have been both reported to be used for marker tracking, but no extensive evaluation on accuracy has been done to compare the two approaches. The objective of our work is to investigate the tracking performance of various camera setups in the HoloLens, and to study the effect of the marker size, marker distance from camera, and camera resolution on marker locating accuracy. We also investigate the speed and stability of marker pose for each camera setup. The tracking approaches are evaluated using ArUco markers. Our results show that mono-vision is more accurate in marker locating than stereo-vision when high resolution is used. However, this comes at the expense of higher frame processing time. Alternatively, we propose a combined low-resolution mono-stereo tracking setup that outperforms each tracking approach individually and is comparable to high resolution mono tracking, with a mean translational error of 1.8 ± 0.6mm for 10cm marker size at 50cm distance. We further discuss our findings and their implications for navigation in surgical interventions. ImPhys/Computational ImagingImPhys/Medical Imagin

On the Concept of Mono-Philosophical investigation on the Mono=mana theory-
AbstractThis thesis aims at clarifying the concept of Mono in Japanese, following the previous studies conducted by the same author. He takes up the newly publicized idea of Mono by NAKANISHI Susumu, that Mono is considered equivalent with mana, a proto-religious concept widely prevalent in the indigenous faith system around the South Pacific region. He expounds NAKANISHI's idea with the additional comments on the concept of mana and the related studies, and makes clear the explanatory inadequacy of the Mono=mana theory. He then introduces the phenomenological conception on space with the notion of omote(front)and ura(back)to make up for the defect of the former studies and constitute a totally consistent theory.10KJ00007759439departmental bulletin pape

Selective mono-acylation of 1,2-and 1,3-diols using (α,α-difluoroalkyl)amines
In the reaction of N,N-diethyl-α,α-difluorobenzylamine (DFBA) with 1,2- or 1,3-diols, selective mono-benzoylation occurs to afford mono-esters of the diols in good yield. The reaction is completed under mild conditions in a short reaction time. Further, prim-, sec-, and tert-diols and catechol can be converted to the corresponding mono-benzoates. DFBA is used for the protection of the hydroxy group in sugars. The selective mono-nicotinylation, formylation and pivaloylation of diols are also performed by using the corresponding difluoroalkylamines
Streamlining plagiarism detection: The role of electronic assessment management
This paper considers the problem of managing the workload implications of plagiarism detection as part of the larger issue of assessment management and within a holistic approach to educational integrity. It looks specifically at the potential for Electronic Assessment Management (EAM) to provide some of the solutions to this problem. It draws on the work of Mantz Yorke whose research into assessment management calls for the establishment of appropriate structures and mechanisms which support systems that achieve the dual imperatives of efficiency and effectiveness. This paper considers the workload issues related to plagiarism detection under these dual imperatives, looking first at the issue of effectiveness and then turning to consider the issue of efficiency. Finally, it argues for why and how these issues should be taken into account in the procurement of digital plagiarism detection software and how the use of these tools should fit within a rigorous and consistent holistic approach to educational integrity
Public-Private Places: Exploring All-Gender Washroom Use at Langara College
This study has explored the value of all-gender washrooms, as “public-private” spaces, to the promotion—and expansion—of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) at snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ Langara College. It also has a secondary aim: to identify the benefits of private spaces like single-stall washrooms in public settings such as a fast-growing post-secondary campus. Such insight has become potentially more relevant as public health constraints under COVID-19 have radically altered access to and uses of public facilities such as restrooms
The effect of mono- versus multi-segment musculoskeletal models of the foot on simulated triceps surae lengths in pathological and healthy gait
Background: Estimating muscle-tendon complex (MTC) lengths is important for planning of soft tissue surgery and evaluating outcomes, e.g. in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Conventional musculoskeletal models often represent the foot as one rigid segment, called a mono-segment foot model (mono-SFM). However, a multi-segment foot model (multi-SFM) might provide better estimates of triceps surae MTC lengths, especially in patients with foot deformities. Research question: What is the effect of a mono- versus a multi-SFM on simulated ankle angles and triceps surae MTC lengths during gait in typically developing subjects and in children with CP with equinus, cavovarus or planovalgus foot deformities? Methods: 50 subjects were included, 10 non-affected adults, 10 typically developing children, and 30 children with spastic CP and foot deformities. During walking trials, marker trajectories were collected for two marker models, including a mono- and multi-segment foot; respectively Newington gait model and Oxford foot model. Two musculoskeletal lower body models were constructed in OpenSim with either a mono- or multi-SFM based on the corresponding marker models. Normalized triceps surae MTC lengths (soleus, gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis) and ankle angles were calculated and compared between models using statistical parametric mapping RM-ANOVAs. Root mean square error values between simulated MTC lengths were compared using Wilcoxon signed-rank and rank-sum tests. Results: Mono-SFM simulated significantly more ankle dorsiflexion (7.5 ± 1.2°) and longer triceps surae lengths (difference; soleus:2.6 ± 0.29 %, gastrocnemius medialis:1.7 ± 0.2 %, gastrocnemius lateralis:1.8 ± 0.2%) than a multi-SFM. Differences between models were larger in children with CP compared to typically developing children and larger in the stance compared to the swing phase of gait. Largest differences were found in children with CP presenting with planovalgus (4.8 %) or cavovarus (3.8 %) foot deformities. Significance: It is advisable to use a multi-SFM in musculoskeletal models when simulating triceps surae MTC lengths, especially in individuals with planovalgus or cavovarus foot deformities.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Biomechatronics & Human-Machine Contro
The Essential Concept of Mono in Japanese Language
Abstract In this paper, the author gives a detailed explanation to the concept of mono in Japanese language to clarify its essential significance. The notion covers so broad a conceptualized area; for instance, it means a particular thing, things in general, personal feeling, sacred things, the mysterious, the uncanny, the eerie and the unearthly, and so on. It seems there are such various meanings in the notion that it is difficult to see the abstract concept of mono, which should be highly comprehensive and essential. In the author's view, the hyper-categorial, abstract meaning can be made clear if we take the following two points into consideration; one is the diachronic notion of mono, and the other is the one within the phenomenological lived space of subjectivity. The abstract concept of mono is characterized as and , and the concept would have various meanings in the context of the phenomenological lived space, which is perceptually signified in the directions by the subject based upon the subject's body as center. When a Japanese speaker captures it in "front", it would mean an objective, definitely discreet thing. When they capture it in "back", it would signify a mysterious, horrible thing. "Side" is related to personal feeling/mood, and "above" is to the holy. The author also introduces other Japanese notions of omote, ura and kage, and clarifies why mono is captured as specific objective reality in "front", although its abstract concept is and .6KJ00007248399departmental bulletin pape
