    AbstractIn this work, we consider the inverse scattering problem for a class of one dimensional Dirac operators on the semi-infinite interval with the boundary condition depending polynomially on a spectral parameter. The scattering data of the given problem is defined and its properties are examined. The main equation is derived, its solvability is proved and it is shown that the potential is uniquely recovered in terms of the scattering data. A generalization of the Marchenko method is given for a class of Dirac operator

    On the positive semi-infinite interval, we obtained a generalization of the Marchenko method for a Dirac equation system with a discontinuous coefficient and a quadratic polynomial on a spectral parameter in the boundary condition. In this connection, we use an new integral representation of the Jost solution of equation systems, which does not have a triangular form. The scattering function of the problem is defined, and its properties are examined. The Marchenko-type main equation is obtained, and it is shown that the potential is uniquely recovered in terms the scattering function

    AbstractOur recent molecular studies revealed two divergent PEP-carboxylase (PEPC [Ppc]) encoding genes in the green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, CrPpc1 and CrPpc2, which are coordinately responsive to changes in inorganic-N and -C supply at the transcript level [Mamedov, T.G., Moellering, E.R. and Chollet, R. (2005) Identification and expression analysis of two inorganic C- and N-responsive genes encoding novel and distinct molecular forms of eukaryotic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase in the green microalga C. reinhardtii, Plant J. 42, 832–843]. Here, we report the distribution of these two encoded catalytic subunits in the minor Class-1 and predominant Class-2 PEPC enzyme-forms, the latter of which is a novel high-molecular-mass, hetero-oligomeric complex containing both CrPpc1 (p109) and CrPpc2 (p131) polypeptides. The Class-1 enzyme, however, is a typical PEPC homotetramer comprised solely of p109. We also document that the amount of both CrPpc1/2 catalytic subunits is up-/down-regulated by varying levels of NH4+ supplied to the culture medium

    Optically addressable, integrative composite polymer microcapsules

    PhDThe development of remotely addressable tools to encapsulate, store and deliver active materials to living cells is a particularly challenging topic of material science. As drug delivery agents, microcontainers not only require high mechanical stability or to be delivered at target cells, but they should also possess efficient remotely addressable release mechanisms. Light responsive polyelectrolyte capsules are well suited for such purposes. Capsules are constructed using the Layer‐by‐Layer technique where oppositely charged polymers are alternatively deposited on a sacrificial template. The interest for such microcapsules lays in their versatile composition and stimuli‐responsive properties, which can be altered to suit specific needs. The primary aim of this work was to develop polymeric capsules with efficient optically addressable release mechanisms. Previous work on this topic revealed severe flaws in biological environments, especially with regards to the high energy requirements necessary for laser‐induced release and in the very limited knowledge of the fate of microcapsules in living cells. These issues were addressed by developing alternative types of light‐responsive capsules and gaining better understanding of existing ones. Three types of materials were used to sensitize microcapsules to the near‐UV, visible and near‐IR spectral regions: (1) azobenzene‐substituted polymers, (2) gold nanoparticles and (3) photocatalytic porphyrinoid dyes. Various methods were used for the characterization of microcapsules, including laser scanning confocal microscopy, colloidal probe and standard atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy, fluorescence spectrophotometry, UV‐visible spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Shells were probed for their mechanical stability as well as encapsulation and release behavior based on parameters such as: assembly strategies, shell deformability, permeability, thermal response and response to laser irradiation. This thesis begins with a brief introduction followed by an extensive literature review summarizing the various topics relevant to the work. The materials and methods used in the investigations are catalogued in Chapter 3 . Chapter 4 presents the destructive effects of pulsed UV lasing on polymeric microcapsules and introduces azobenzene‐functionalized capsules with the ability to encapsulate macromolecules by exposure to continuous wave UV light. Chapter 5 looks at the mechanical properties of capsules functionalized with gold nanoparticles as well as their remote release capabilities under near‐IR irradiation. While most of these studies were conducted ex vivo, Chapter 5 concludes with a summary of studies performed in vitro, which demonstrates that it is not only possible to release substances in living cells by light but that the latter also survive in the process. Finally, in Chapter 6, the assembly and light induced destabilization of microcapsules containing porphyrinoid dyes is presented

    ALTICORE: an initiative for coastal altimetry

    ALTICORE (value-added ALTImetry for COastal REgions) is an international initiative whose main objective is to encourage the operational use of altimetry over coastal areas, by improving the quality and availability of coastal altimetry data. The ALTICORE proposal has recently been submitted for funding to the INTAS scheme (www.intas.be) by a consortium of partners from Italy, France, UK, Russia and Azerbaijan. ALTICORE is also meant as a contribution to the ongoing International Altimeter Service effort. In this work we will describe the anticipated project stages, namely: 1) improvement of the most widely distributed, 1 Hz, data by analyzing the corrective terms and providing the best solutions, including those derived from appropriate local modelling; 2) development of a set of algorithms to automate quality control and gap-filling functions for the coastal regions; 3) development of testing strategies to ensure a thorough validation of the data. The improved products will be delivered to ALTICORE users via Grid-compliant technology; this makes it easier to integrate the local data holdings, allows access from a range of services, e.g. directly into model assimilation or GIS systems and should therefore facilitate a widespread and complete assessment of the 1Hz data performance and limitations. We will also outline the design and implementation of the Grid-compliant system for efficient access to distributed archives of data; this consists of regional data centres, each having primary responsibility for regional archives, local corrections and quality control, and operating a set of web-services allowing access to the full functionality of data extraction. We will conclude by discussing a follow-on phase of the project; this will investigate further improvements on the processing strategy, including the use of higher frequency (10 or 20 Hz) data. Phenomena happen at smaller spatial scales near the coast, so this approach is necessary to match the required resolution. The whole project will hopefully promote the 15-year sea surface height from altimetry to the rank of operational record for the coastal areas
