Le firme di Bonvesin da la Riva

    No full text
Bonvesin da la Riva signed all three of his Latin works known to us by inserting his own name in the text: Carmina de mensium and Vita scolastica, in verse, and the De magnalibus Mediolani, in prose. Similarly he signed ten of his writings in the vernacular. This attitude seems contradictory: on the one hand it shows the authorial awareness of B., on the other it contrasts with the humility of his "order" (the third order of the Humiliati) and with the humility of B., wich is shown clearly by his writings and his actions. But the contradiction is only apparent and melts with the use of the interpretatio nominis of the name Bonvesin (= Bonus Vicinus = Good neighbor); this interpretation makes this name to be almost a title for works written for the goodness of the civil society

    Individual Freedom: A Pluralist Account

The paper proposes a pluralist analysis of the idea of freedom that seeks to account for its complexity. The starting point is dissatisfaction with attempts to demonstrate the superiority of one specification of the concept of freedom – negative, positive, republican, etc. – over others. According to the author, each of these specifications captures an aspect of freedom but does not exhaust its meaning. The author distinguishes six dimensions of freedom: freedom as non-subordination, freedom as permission, freedom as non-prevention, freedom of choice, freedom as non-subjection, and freedom as self-determination. According to the author, the six dimensions of freedom are not entirely reducible to one another. Only a concept of freedom that embraces them all can do justice to the idea and value of freedom

Personal experience in positive psychology may offer a new focus for a growing discipline

    No full text
Comments on the original article by McNulty and Fincham (see record 2011-15476-001). The authors indicated the need to think beyond positive psychology. In particular, they argued that positive psychology needs "to move beyond labeling psychological traits and processes as positive." In general, the current author agrees with the two authors on the need for a "situated" positive psychology that is able to address the context in which we spend our lives. However, their suggestions have a critical flaw: They do not clearly distinguish between psychology and positive psychology. The current author lists a number of suggestions on ways to overcome this issue with a different approach. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)

    No full text
Riva Kastoryano analyses how immigrant populations organise and how they express their collective identity. The author thereby questions national political traditions with regards to the construction of a new form of political action: Europe. The author offers an analysis of the Europeanization of political action for these immigrant populations by observing the constitution of transnational networks. This article shows how this Europeanization being encouraged by supranational institutions produces effects within each Nation-State. The author pertinently questions the idea of citizen allegiances by giving a problematic to the notion of citizenship through the sociology of these networks transcending national frontiers.

    No full text
The paper explores the relation between multiculturalism and egalitarianism of opportunities, focusing on claims by minorities resulting from migrations. After considering some convergences between multiculturalism and egalitarianism of opportunities, the paper addresses their possible tensions. Firstly, egalitarianism of opportunities could require public agencies to promote the overcoming of certain traditional beliefs, what can contrast with the aim of preserving cultural traditions. Secondly, the politics of identity could undermine the solidarity among people that is a precondition for those policies needed to promote equality of opportunities. The author claims that in so far as multiculturalism and egalitarianism of opportunities are incompatible, multiculturalism should be rejected
