Human, more Human : Proust reincarnated
International audienceA century after his death, it is time to reassess the figure of Proust as revealed by publications and research devoted to the author of A la recherche du temps perdu. After the structuralist groundswell that accompanied the rise of the writer's reception, Contre Sainte-Beuve appeared as a precursor text of this critical current that distinguishes the text from its author, to the point of having claimed the latter's death. The genetics of texts and, in general, the study and publication of the writer's drafts have initiated a humanisation of the figure of Proust, and this affects not only the person of the author but also his entourage, knowledge of which makes it possible to better understand both the man and the work
International audienceThe genesis of Brassens's songs remains to be seen, as the collection is fragmented and incomplete. The documents that do exist, however, reveal a recurring process that leads the author from a posture based on his personal ethics, to texts that express the songwriter's ethos.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
International audienceThis paper offers a dynamic transcription of the opening lines of Chapter XIV of Jacques Rivière's posthumous novel, Florence. Left unfinished by the sudden death of its author, this novel, published in 1935 by Isabelle Rivière, was a bone of contention between the writer's widow and the team at La NRF, led by Paulhan and Gide. Chapter XIV, the last chapter in its current form, has two versions that take the text in two very different directions. The dynamic transcription of the evolution of Rivière's writing provides a better understanding of the issues at stake. It will be supplemented by a textometric study.
International audienceThis article continues Giono's exploration of literary creation, this time at the beginning and end of his career, and considers the question of landscape writing. He shows that the landscape is always the subject of a rewriting process that tends towards lightening and deletion. However, we move from the landscape character in Colline to the landscape character in Ennemonde. In the last texts, the author deletes images that he loved in his early days and that come back under his pen.
International audienceIn the training of the young Marcel Proust, Taine appears as a master. In his work on Sainte-Beuve, the writer nonetheless questioned the "Botanique morale" to which the philosopher reduced literature, and he also distanced himself from an approach that subordinated creation to psychology and philosophy. For all that, involuntary memory is directly derived from Taine's associationism. In the light of this analysis, Sainte-Beuve appears as the tree of literary criticism that hides the forest of a questioning of the subordination of art to philosophy. The importance of the author of Les Lundis is to be relativised in relation to that of Taine, who was both a victim of rejection and the starting point of a "novel of memory".Dans la formation du jeune Marcel Proust, Taine apparaît comme un maître.
International audienceMarcel Proust impresses, and his omnipresence in recent years doesn't necessarily help us to enter into a work that is said to be difficult, demanding, even austere. The immediate grasp afforded by images dispenses with the deciphering of signs - graphic, then linguistic and semiotic - that reading imposes, and facilitates the discovery of the work and its author. Ever since Stéphane Heuet's masterful adaptation of the first volumes of La Recherche, we've known that Proust lends himself to the visual arts, and the three books featured here show that the graphic novel, the comic strip and even the children's album are a way of approaching the Proustian massif on a gentle slope - with varying joys and perils.
