AN EVALUATION OF THE EFG GROWTH MODEL IN ITS CAPACITY TO PREDICT AMINO ACID REQUIREMENTS IN BROILERS
An experiment imposing the multi continuous phase feeding was carried out to evaluate the EFG
(Emman, Fisher and Gous) Growth Model in its capacity to predict amino acid requirements in broilers.
Birds were fed using blended summit (247.91g/kg CP, 3200 kcal of ME /kg) and dilution (166.26 g/kg
CP, 3200 kcal of ME g/kg ) diets and offered to 2-4 or 8 phases. Two hundred male day-old broiler
chicks of two commercial strains (A=Ingham and B = Steggles) were used. The predicted responses
were greater than the observed both gain (g/d) and feed intake (g/d). The discrepancy between the
observed and predicted gain in the strain A and B birds, showed a different pattern, with a marked
difference during the early growing period, with a degree of convergence in the late growing period for
the strain A but the reverse picture for the strain B. This shows that strain characterization is not
accurate due to an inadequate definition of the genotypes by the model. Non agreement between
predicted and determined gain and feed intakes provided little benefit in moving towards a more
frequent change in diet to accommodate predicted growth-related changes in amino acid requirements.

SYT- ja PYM-matriisien unitaarisista vastineista
Olkoon A = {x1,x2,...,xn} pienimmästä suurimpaan alkioon järjestetty joukko positiivisia kokonaislukuja ja olkoon f aritmeettinen funktio. Joukon A ja aritmeettisen funktion f määräämällä SYT-matriisilla tarkoitetaan matriisia, jonka i. rivin j. alkio on funktion f arvo alkoiden xi ja xj suurimman yhteisen tekijän kohdalla. Vastaavasti määritellään joukon A ja funktion f määräämä PYM-matriisi pienimmän yhteisen monikerran avulla.
Näin ollen yritys muodostaa PYM-matriisille unitaarinen vastine suoraan pienimmän yhteisen unitaarimonikerran avulla on tuomittu epäonnistumaan. SYT-matriisin unitaarinen vastine sen sijaan voidaan määritellä korvaamalla suurin yhteinen tekijä suurimmalla yhteisellä unitaaritekijällä.
Pentti Haukkanen, Pauliina Ilmonen, Ayse Nalli ja Juha Sillanpää esittelevät artikkelissa On unitary analogs of GCD reciprocal LCM matrices kolme erilaista menetelmää kokonaislukujen joukon sekä unitaaritekijärelaation laajentamiseen sellaiseksi, että laajennettu joukko yhdessä laajennetun unitaaritekijärelaation kanssa muodostaa hilan. Tällöin kutakin laajennusta hyödyntäen pystytään muodostamaan SYT- ja PYM-matriiseille tietynlaisia unitaarisia vastineita. Artikkelissa määritetään myös kaavat tiettyjen aritmeettisten funktioiden luokkien määräämien SYT- ja PYM-matriisien unitaaristen vastineiden Hadamardin osamäärän determinantille sekä osoitetaan, että konstruoidut laajennukset eroavat merkittävästi toisistaan tiettyjen ominaisuuksien suhteen. Tässä tutkielmassa perehdytään tämän artikkelin lauseiden todistuksiin, laajennusten konstruktioihin sekä tutustutaan suurimpaan osaan artikkelin ymmärtämiseen tarvittavista esitiedoista
The effect of the subtitling task on vocabulary learning
This paper reports on a quasi-experimental study carried out at the National University of Ireland to investigate the development of subtitling in the foreign-language class. The study uses both qualitative and quantitative methods and focuses on the effects of the subtitling task on incidental vocabulary acquisition. The sixteen students (Level A2 of CEFR) of Italian as a foreign language were assigned either subtitling practice (Experimental Group) or oral comprehension tasks and writing tasks (Control Group). Both groups worked for a total of four hours (1 hour per week). All participants sat a pre-test to ensure the target words were unknown; immediate and delayed post-tests were administered after the experiment. The results are presented and discussed
Contractible Proof Structures
We present an application of a confluent rewriting system, based on local deformation steps (contrac- tions) of special graphs (proof structures), to the proof construction paradigm of the pure multiplicative and additive fragment of linear logic. This system allows to detect, among proof structures, those (correct) ones that correspond to very compact (bipolar and focussing) derivations of the sequent calculus of linear logic. In particular, a correct proof structure, called transitory net, is a proof structure that retracts to a special invariant graph, called normal form (i.e., a set of single nodes)
A proof-theoretic analysis of the classical propositional matrix method
The matrix method, due to Bibel and Andrews, is a proof procedure designed for automated theorem-proving. We show that underlying this method is a fully structured combinatorial model of conventional classical proof theory. © 2012 The Author, 2012. Published by Oxford University Press
A study of the presentation of women in the novels of Barbara Pym
In this dissertation I attempt an evaluation of Barbara Pym as a feminist writer. I study
the central protagonists in Pym's twelve novels in the context of British society in the
1950s, 1960s and 1970s. I have drawn on feminist critical paradigms in my reading of
Pym's novels in order to highlight my insights into her women characters.
Chapter One examines Pym 's use of comedy and subversion in relation to her main
protagonists.
Chapter Two explores the 'Excellent Woman' figure in Pym's fiction and the issue of
spinsterhood.
Chapter Three scrutinises Pym's use of satire and tragedy in relation to her heroines.
Chapter Four investigates the emergence of the 'fallen' and 'formidable' women figures in
Pym's novels, and analyses the ageing spinster figure.
My conclusion is that Barbara Pym is a humanist feminist of some importance, who
succeeds in illuminating her heroines' struggles against patriarchy in the context of a
changing British society.M.A. (English)English Studie
PYM is a non-essential gene in <i>Drosophila</i>.
<p>(A) Schematic diagram showing the genomic organization of <i>pym</i> (<i>wibg</i>, shown in blue) relative to the <i>bgcn</i> gene (show in green) in the right arm of the second chromosome (2R). The centromere is to the left and the telomere is at the right. Open boxes and interconnecting lines represent exons and introns, respectively. The 5′UTRs are shown as filled black boxes. The insertion site of the P-element, <i>P{lacW}wibgSH1616</i> is depicted as a triangle. (B and C) Western blot analysis of <i>Drosophila</i> adult (B) and ovary (C) extracts shows the absence of PYM protein from <i>pym</i> null flies (B, lanes 3 and 4; C, lane 2) as compared to the wild-type (WT; B, lanes 1 and 2; C, lane 1). The antibodies used for staining are indicated on the right of the panel. S = short Oskar, L = long Oskar, KHC = kinesin heavy chain. (D) Fluorescent <i>in situ</i> hybridization coupled with immunostaining of wild-type (WT, upper panel) and <i>pym</i> null (lower panel) egg-chambers during stages 8 and 9 of oogenesis. <i>oskar</i> mRNA is detected with a 3′UTR probe (red) while anti-Oskar staining is shown in greyscale. DAPI is in cyan. Scale bar 25 µm.</p
PYM disassembles EJC from a non-translatable <i>oskar</i> mRNA.
<p>(A–D) Whole mount immunostaining using anti-Staufen antibody (red) of stage 9 <i>oskar</i> RNA null egg-chambers expressing either <i>oskΔi(2,3)-boxB</i> transgene alone (A) or together with the GFP-tagged PYM transgenes (B–D) indicated at the right of the panels. A schematic diagram of the <i>oskΔi(2,3)-boxB</i> RNA is shown at the top of the panel. DAPI is in cyan. Scale bar 25 µm. (E) Western blot analysis of ovarian extract of flies shown in A–D shows the absence of Oskar translation in egg-chambers expressing <i>oskΔi(2,3)-boxB</i> transgene. Antibodies used for protein detection are indicated on the right. An asterisk indicates the short isoform of Oskar protein and the arrow shows endogenous PYM. KHC = kinesin heavy chain.</p
