For three days the scholars who spoke at the conference reflected on the meaning and functions, on the cult and ritual practices, on the places that have defined the moments of the celebration over time and on the forms of competitive representation (dances, races, competitions, skill games) or dramatic - of which music and singing were an essential part - which, often intrinsically, accompany them. In his introduction, the author examines the nuances of meaning contained in the term utsava, "feast", "joy" in Sanskrit

Modelling of impulse loading in high-temperature superconductors. Assessment of accuracy and performance of computational techniques.

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to access performance of existing computational techniques to model strongly non-linear field diffusion problems. Design/methodology/approach – Multidimensional application of a finite volume front-fixing method to various front-type problems with moving boundaries and non-linear material properties is discussed. Advantages and implementation problems of the technique are highlighted by comparing the front-fixing method with computations using fixed grids. Particular attention is focused on conservation properties of the algorithm and accurate solutions close to the moving boundaries. The algorithm is tested using analytical solutions of diffusion problems with cylindrical symmetry with both spatial and temporal accuracy analysed. Findings – Several advantages are identified in using a front-fixing method for modelling of impulse phenomena in high-temperature superconductors (HTS), namely high accuracy can be obtained with a small number of grid points, and standard numerical methods for convection problems with diffusion can be utilised. Approximately, first order of spatial accuracy is found for all methods (stationary or mobile grids) for 2D problems with impulse events. Nevertheless, errors resulting from a front-fixing technique are much smaller in comparison with fixed grids. Fractional steps method is proved to be an effective algorithm for solving the equations obtained. A symmetrisation procedure has to be introduced to eliminate a directional bias for a standard asymmetric split in diffusion processes. Originality/value – This paper for the first time compares in detail advantages and implementation complications of a front-fixing method when applied to the front-type field diffusion problems common to HTS. Particular attention is paid to accurate solutions in the region close to the moving front where rapid changes in material properties are responsible for large computational errors. Keywords - Modelling, Numerical analysis, Diffusion, High temperatures, Superconductors Paper type - Research pape

This thesis presents the translation from Russian into Italian of a series of conversations about Digital Humanities and literary studies, taken from the book Sem’ besed o filologii i Digital Humanities written by Igor’ Pil’ščikov, a Russian scholar specialising in Russian literature, poetics, comparative literature, and Digital Humanities currently serving as a Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). We will discuss the main issues raised by the author in the Conversations, such as the impact of Russian Formalism on Digital Humanities in Russia, the similarities between the quantitative formalism of Boris Jarcho and Franco Moretti and the key projects developed in Russian DH, including The Fundamental Digital Library of Russian Literature and Folklore and The Russian Virtual Library. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that Digital Humanities deserve thorough investigation, as they have strong roots in the past but also promising prospects for future research.

The Immortal Host of Prince Igor

The attention of the author of this paper is focused on “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” (Slovo o polku Igoreve), a famous work of Russian literature. Before the revolution the text was included in the school curriculum, and within the period of 1850–1917 its separate editions exceeded 150. The early Soviet period was marked by a brief decline of the popularity of the “Tale”, but since mid-1930s, the number of its separate editions started to grow, and the negative or indifferent comments on Prince Igor Sviatoslavich in Soviet encyclopedias were replaced by the favorable ones. The heroization of its characters during the Great Patriotic War also contributed to the popularity of the “Tale”. After the war, “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” was effectively used again as a symbol of the unity of three brotherly nations — Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian. The celebrations of different anniversaries, such as the 750th anniversary of the “Tale” and 150th anniversary of its first publication were also typical of the Soviet era. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the “Tale” has become an object of rivalry between Russia and Ukraine. Each country claims to be the only true heir of the “Tale”, actively contributing to its popularization via publications, the organization of commemorative events and the introduction of its text into school curriculums. However, further prospects of the “Tale” commemoration-wise are quite obscure — the article argues that the “Tale” (as well as many other literary works) does not constitute an effective tool for building of national past. The article is prepared for publication under the patronage of RNF as part of research project “‘Mobilized Middle Ages’, focused on the medieval images in the discourses of nation and state building in Russia, Central European and Baltic states in the modern and contemporary time”, project No. 16-18-10080

“The Glass Bead Game” with Igor Volgin: A TV Show about Literature in Modern Culture

    No full text
The urgency of the study is determined by the interpretation of TV shows about literature as hybrid forms that appeared during the transition from literature-centrism to media-centrism, solving literature-centric problems via media-centric means. The aim of the work is to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the TV pro- gram about literature “The Glass Bead Game” with Igor Volgin. The work of Pierre Bourdieu “On Television”, and specifically its part devoted to television debates, became the theoretical and methodological basis for the study. Following the algorithm suggested by the sociologist, the author pays attention not only to the content of the TV show, but also to its structural and formal features, including the figure of the presenter, the set of the invited experts, the peculiarities of the script and editing, and the importance of timing on television. The structural, semiotic, discursive and typological approaches are also used to analyze the show. The following conclusions were obtained as a result of the study. “The Glass Bead Game” is a transmedia (multi-platform) project located on four media platforms and reflecting their communicative advantages and disadvantages. From the genre point of view, the program is defined as a TV talk show, which includes conversations about classic literature works and combines the principles of mass production with a high intellectual level of presentation. The participants of the program (Igor Volgin and the experts invited by him) personify a certain audiovisual section of the Russian humanitarian intelligentsia of the last decade. From the content point of view, the talk show is viewed upon as a collection of interpretations of various classic works within the frame of the “traditional” (hermeneutical) research paradigm. From the formal point of view, “The Glass Bead Game” has not only an established structure, but also factors of variability, providing a diversity of issues. The show uses various television means to make it more spectacular and dynamic. The reception of “The Glass Bead Game” is also analyzed on the professional level and in terms of its popularity with a wide audience. The results of the study can be used in courses on contempo- rary literature and media practices
