PuMa-II: A wide band pulsar machine for the westerbork synthesis radio telescope
The Pulsar Machine II (PuMa-II) is the new flexible pulsar processing back-end system at the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), specifically designed to take advantage of the upgraded WSRT. The instrument is based on a computer cluster running the Linux operating system, with minimal custom hardware. A maximum of 160 MHz analog bandwidth sampled as 8 x 20 MHz subbands with 8-bit resolution can be recorded on disks attached to separate computer nodes. Processing of the data is done in the additional 32 nodes allowing near real time coherent dedispersion for most pulsars observed at the WSRT. This has doubled the bandwidth for pulsar observations in general, and has enabled the use of coherent dedispersion over a bandwidth 8 times larger than was previously possible at the WSRT. PuMa-II is one of the widest bandwidth coherent dedispersion machines currently in use and has a maximum time resolution of 50 ns. The system is now routinely used for high-precision pulsar timing studies, polarization studies, single pulse work, and a variety of other observational work

MOUNTAIN LION Puma concolor ATTACKS ON A MANED WOLF Chrysocyon brachyurus AND A DOMESTIC DOG IN A FORESTRY SYSTEM
ABSTRACT: Two independent attacks of mountain lions Puma concolor (Linnaeus, 1771) on different canid species are reported in this note. One of the canids was a sub-adult captive maned wolf Chrysocyon brachyurus (Illiger, 1815), revealing skull damaged by canine tooth perforation and several bruises along the body. Examination of the wounds and the killing site provided reasonable details on how the attack was conducted. The mountain lion grabbed the maned wolf from behind with both forepaws, and killed it with a bite at the nape of the neck and at the back of the skull. From the low disturbance of the site, the killing must have been accomplished fast and without much struggle. The second attack was on a domestic dog, in a house yard. It was carried out by a sub-adult, abnormal female mountain lion, which was killed with a club by the property owner while charging. The inability to hunt wild prey, due to physical impairment, was certainly what motivated the mountain lion to attack the domestic dog. The aim of this article is to provide information on mountain lion interactions with non-prey species, and to discuss the implications of the proximity of mountain lions to human dwellings.

Message passing in PUMA
This paper provides an overview of the message passing primitives provided by PUMA (Performance-oriented, User-managed Messaging Architecture). Message passing in PUMA is based on the concept of a portal--an opening in the address space of an application process. Once an application process has established a portal, other processes can write values into the memory associated with the portal using a simple send operation. Because messages are written directly into the address space of the receiving process, there is not need to buffer messages in the PUMA kernel. This simplifies the design of the kernel, increasing its reliability and portability. Moreover, because messages are mapped directly into the address space of the application process, the application can manage the messages that it receives without needing direct support from the kernel
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Multiphysics Computational Fluid-Dynamics (CFD) Modeling of Annular Photocatalytic Reactors by the Discrete Ordinates Method (DOM) and the Six-Flux Model (SFM) and Evaluation of the Contaminant Intrinsic Kinetics Constants
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was used to model an annular photocatalytic reactor by solving the Radiative Transfer Equation (RTE) using the Discrete Ordinates Model (DOM) and the Six-Flux model (SFM) with isotropic scattering. The RTE boundary condition (BC) at the light entrance wall with the SFM was either the irradiance or the fluence rate, calculated using the LSSE, LSDE or ESDE light emission models. The Total Rate of Photon Absorption (TRPA) calculated with the SFM and fluence rate BC was overestimated by 29 - 21 % in comparison to the DOM, when the optical thickness varied between 1.8 and 3.2 %, and was underestimated by 3.1–8.8 % when irradiance was the BC. The intrinsic reaction kinetics constants of 2-hydroxybenzoic acid (2-HBA) determined using the SFM in experimental reactors operated at very high optical thicknesses were 1 % higher and 18 % lower, than the constants determined with DOM, when irradiance or fluence rate, respectively, was used as BC. Overall, the SFM combined with the irradiance BC provides a more accurate evaluation of the LVRPA and intrinsic reaction kinetics constants, with instantaneous solutions, while the DOM computational time > 20 min. This aspect is highly important in solar photocatalytic reactors with fluctuating irradiance
CFD modeling of pharmaceuticals and CECs removal by UV/H2O2 process in helical microcapillary photoreactors and evaluation of OH radical rate constants
Process intensification by tailored secondary flow in helical microcapillary film (MCF) photoreactors was unveiled by computational fluid dynamics, and it was revealed for the removal of six common contaminants of emerging concern CECs (the antiviral Acyclovir, the antiretrovirals Stavudine and Zidovudine, and the biocidal antifungal agents Methylisothiazolinone, Benzisothiazolinone and Isoxazole) in water by UV hydrogen peroxide. The MCF photoreactors consisted of fluoropolymer films containing 10 microchannels with diameter varying from 100 to 1000 μm coiled around a UVC lamp. In contrast to a MCF with straight channels, mixing intensification by secondary flow (Dean vortices) caused by the helical shape of the microcapillary strongly enhanced the radial fluid mixing, further supplementing the transport of the reacting species by Taylor-Aris dispersion. The intensity of the Dean vortices formed was correlated to the Dean (De) and Schmidt (Sc) numbers through a new correlation for the radial Peclet, which established that these become significant when De1.94Sc>67. Thus, the second-order reaction rate constant of the six CECs with OH• radicals (kOH) determined in a helical MCF photoreactor increased (4.4% up to 37.9%) in comparison to those determined assuming a MCF photoreactor with plug flow. In addition, the helical shape of the MCF significantly diminished mass transfer limitations and decreased the CECs Electrical Energy per Order Reduction (EEO), paving the way for scaling-up of helical microcapillary photoreactor technology. This study shows how micromixing can be successfully exploited to design more efficient microcapillary photoreactors
