Search for new physics in events with same-sign dileptons and jets in pp collisions at ?s = 8 TeV

    No full text
A search for new physics is performed based on events with jets and a pair of isolated, same-sign leptons. The results are obtained using a sample of proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb-1. In order to be sensitive to a wide variety of possible signals beyond the standard model, multiple search regions defined by the missing transverse energy, the hadronic energy, the number of jets and b-quark jets, and the transverse momenta of the leptons in the events are considered. No excess above the standard model background expectation is observed and constraints are set on a number of models for new physics, as well as on the same-sign top-quark pair and quadruple-top-quark production cross sections. Information on event selection efficiencies is also provided, so that the results can be used to confront an even broader class of new physics models. Neutrino Physics

When Kai Zuber’s pioneering text on neutrinos was published in 2003, the author correctly predicted that the field would see tremendous growth in the immediate future. In that book, Professor Zuber provided a comprehensive self-contained examination of neutrinos, covering their research history and theory, as well as their application to particle physics, astrophysics, nuclear physics, and the broad reach of cosmology; but now to be truly comprehensive and accurate, the field’s seminal reference needs to be revised and expanded to include the latest research, conclusions, and implications. Revised as needed to be equal to the research of today, Neutrino Physics, Third Edition delves into neutrino cross-sections, mass measurements, double beta decay, solar neutrinos, neutrinos from supernovae, and high-energy neutrinos, as well as entirely new experimental results in the context of theoretical models. Written to be accessible to graduate students and readers from diverse backgrounds, this edition, like the first, provides both an introduction to the field as well as the information needed by those looking to make their own contributions to it. And like the second edition, it whets the researcher’s appetite, going beyond certainty to pose those questions that still need answers. Features Presents the only single-author comprehensive text on neutrino physics Includes experimental and theoretical particle physics and examines solar neutrinos and astroparticle implications Offers details on new developments and recent experiment

We examine skyrmions driven periodically over random quenched disorder and show that there is a transition from reversible motion to a state in which the skyrmion trajectories are chaotic or irreversible. We find that the characteristic time required for the system to organize into a steady reversible or irreversible state exhibits a power law divergence near a critical ac drive period, with the same exponent as that observed for reversible to irreversible transitions in periodically sheared colloidal systems, suggesting that the transition can be described as an absorbing phase transition in the directed percolation universality class. We compare our results to the behavior of an overdamped system and show that the Magnus term enhances the irreversible behavior by increasing the number of dynamically accessible orbits. We discuss the implications of this work for skyrmion applications involving the long time repeatable dynamics of dense skyrmion arrays. © 2019 The Author(s). 32nd International Physics Congress of Turkish-Physical-Society (TPS) -- SEP 06-09, 2016 -- Bodrum, TURKEYThis study aims to investigate the 10th and 11th grade Physics textbooks in accordance with the 2013 Secondary School Physics Curriculum from the perspective of project-based learning method and to share the results with the physics education public. The research was carried out in the 2015-2016 academic year as part of an undergraduate course taught in physics teaching program at a faculty of education; and 10 senior students of physics teachercandidates participated in the study. The research method is the survey model based on qualitative research approach. Data collection tools consist of the reports written by the participants who examined the curriculum and textbooks for project-based learning problems. According to research findings, most of the educational gains in the 10th and 11th grade physics textbooks were supported with experimental activities; however, project-based assignments are needed.Turkish Phys So

Evolution of the algebraic error in the evaluation processes mathematics and physics in engineering students

    No full text
This research aimed to analyze the evolution of the algebraic error in the evaluation processes of mathematics and physics in engineering students, of the Universidad de Pamplona, Villa del Rosario, Colombia. Theoretically, it was based on a typology of errors. The methodology was descriptive quantitative study. The sample consisted of 77 students from engineering programs. The instruments were a Likert scale and a test of knowledge in mathematics and physics involving algebraic arithmetic operations. The results show that 9 errors were replicated in the students of the three subjects evaluated. The most frequent errors were errors when performing algebraic arithmetic operations followed by incorrect own procedures and invalid inferences and errors in the additive resolution of the potency of an unfinished binomial and procedure. In conclusion, it can be said that the same errors appear in the three subjects although it is believed that with the passing of the semesters and the training of the students they should disappear when they finish their academic program

    The Physics Aviary

Physics teachers and students may want to explore the Physics Aviary, a free resource created by Frank McCulley, a physics teacher at Delsea Regional High School in New Jersey. Launched in 2013, the Physics Aviary offers a wide array of cross-platform teaching and learning aids, including labs, simulation tools, games, and homework problems. To help fellow teachers more easily identify which aids may be most relevant to them, McCulley has also created resource outlines that follow the curricula he uses for his AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, and Honors Physics courses and that link to the Physics Aviary programs that align with the different topics for each course. The site's Search form allows for both simple keyword searches as well as more narrow searches by fields like unit and program type. Repeat visitors may want to begin by checking out the New page to see what has been most recently added or revised. Given the sheer quantity of resources available here, the Physics Aviary is well worth bookmarking and visiting multiple times
