Pope Francis: Builder of Bridges
Before he was Pope Francis, Jorge Bergolio lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As a young boy he loved playing soccer and praying with his grandmother. Eventually, Jorge became a priest and hosted movies and soccer games for the poor children in his city. After becoming a bishop, he was chosen to be the next pope. He took on the name of Pope Francis and immediately began serving the people. Another word for pope is “pontiff” which means someone who builds bridges between people. Pope Francis strives to do just that! He wants to serve people of every religion and social class because he believes that everyone can be good
Pope Francis and the Unity of the Church in Mission
The author begins with a personal testimony of his thirteen-year relationship with Cardinal Bergoglio in Argentina prior to his becoming Pope Francis. He presents the cardinal’s growing relationship with the evangelical community as well as the joint projects they carried out in their city. The author then speaks about his discernment of the signs of the times that Evangelicals can see in Pope Francis: the power of love, a Christian witness of life, the value of Christian poverty, and a leadership of service. He concludes with what he feels called to by the example of Pope Francis: preaching with passion, living the word of God, loving more radically, and returning to the simplicity of the Gospel life
Making of Pope Francis
Jorge Mario Bergoglio known as Pope Francis today is a unique gift to God. He stepped in at a moment when the Church was feeling very low with a dwindling self-esteem, fragile and defenseless, her moral authority challenged from within and out. He was chosen by God to guide his Church as a sacrament of God’s mercy and forgiving love and to rejuvenate the Church to be powerful witness of God’s kingdom. A brief life sketch of Pope Francis and an analysis of the events and experiences that molded and formed Pope Francis, a leader of unprecedented courage and qualities would show that this person is gifted to the Church by the Lord to renew the Church and re-awaken its mission to be the light and the salt of the earth. His self-awareness of his weaknesses and strengths, his complete trust in the providential care of the Lord and renewing power of the Spirit, his lived experience of Ignatian spirituality help him to guide the Church through dialogue, discernment and de-centralization. Pope Francis has brought in revolutionary change in Church, attitudes, approach and style in relating with those within the Church as well as outside the Church. In spite of considerable resistance, such attitudinal and stylistic changes have evoked greater confidence, hope and enthusiasm in the ordinary believers and a greater acceptance of Pope’s spiritual and moral leadership by the entire world
