Comparison of ovarian cycles of Hungarian riverine fish species representing different spawning strategies

    No full text
Investigations on the ovarian cycle of fish species that inhabit Hungarian rivers are necessitated by both environmental and economic reasons. The objective of our research was to explore new fundamental knowledge concerning the ovarian cycle of the white bream (Blicca bjoerkna, Linnaeus, 1758), barbel (Barbus barbus, Linnaeus, 1758), orfe (Leuciscus idus, Linnaeus, 1758) and nase (Chondrostoma nasus, Linnaeus, 1758). Histological investigation of ovaries and determination of proportions of oocytes in different stages of development is an appropriate method for the description of spawning characteristics of these species. Our results show that the GSI value for all four investigated species starts to increase at the end of summer and reaches its maximum before spawning. In the barbel and white bream, the presence of oocytes in the stage of cortical alveoli and the heterogeneous size of oocytes in the stage of vitellogenesis in the pre-spawning period indicate that barbel and white bream are multiple spawners. In contrast, in the orfe and nase, the absence of oocytes in the stage of cortical alveoli and the homogeneous size of cells in the stage of vitellogenesis indicate that orfe and nase are single spawners

Research into sports participation has increasingly pointed to inherent biological mechanisms as influential factors alongside psychosocial and environmental elements. The dopaminergic D2 receptor is a strong candidate gene for physical activity behaviour, given its role in locomotor control and reward mechanisms. Hence, this study aimed to analyse the association of the DRD2 gene Tag1B rs1079597 polymorphism with personality traits in elite athletes. The study group consisted of 395 volunteers. Of these, 163 were professional athletes (22.56±5.9; M = 114, F = 49), and 232 were controls (22.07±4.3; M = 150, F = 82). The MINI-International Neuropsychiatric Interview and the NEO Five-Factor Inventory were administered in both groups. Genotyping was performed using the real-time PCR method. Statistical analysis was performed: genotypes and alleles frequencies were compared using the chi-square test and the relations between DRD2 Tag1B rs1079597 variants, professional athletes and control participants and the NEO Five-Factor Inventory were analysed with the factorial ANOVA. Statistically significant differences were found in the frequency of DRD2 Tag1B rs1079597 genotypes and alleles in the group of professional athletes group compared to the control group. The GG genotype and G allele were significantly more frequent in the group of professional athletes (G/G 0.79 vs G/G 0.66; A/A 0.04 vs A/A 0.03; A/G 0.17 vs A/G 0.31, p = 0.0056; G 0.87 vs. G 0.81; A 0.13 vs. A 0.19, p = 0.0281) compared to the control group. The professional athletes’ participants, compared to the controls, obtained significantly higher scores in the assessment of NEO-FFI Extraversion (p = 0.0369) and Conscientiousness (p < 0.0001) scales. Additionally, there was a statistically significant effect of DRD2 rs1079597 genotype association with being a professional athlete on the Openness scale (F2.3389 = 3.07; p = 0.0475; η2 = 0.015) and on the Conscientiousness scale (F2.3389 = 3.23; p = 0.0406; η2 = 0.016). This study highlights the significant associations between the DRD2 Taq1B polymorphicsite and personality traitsin a group of professional athletes. It also demonstratesthe association of Taq1B polymorphism and professional sportsmanship with personality traits measured by NEO-FFI. The results suggest that genetic factors and professional sportsmanship both shape an athlete’s personality traits

Introduction: This study investigates an association between the human dopamine receptor 2 gene DRD2 Taq1D rs1800498 polymorphism and personality traits among athletes, exploring the genetic underpinnings of sports performance and psychological characteristics. It aims to understand how genetic factors related to dopamine reception influence athletic predispositions and behaviors. Materials and Methods: An association study was conducted with 391 male participants, comparing 159 sports subjects with 232 non-trained controls. Personality traits were assessed using the NEO Five-Factor Inventory, while the DRD2 Taq1D rs1800498 polymorphism was genotyped through real-time PCR. Results: Significant differences in the DRD2 Taq1D rs1800498 genotype and allele frequencies were found between athletes and controls, with athletes displaying higher scores in extraversion and conscientiousness on the NEO-FFI scales. These findings suggest a genetic influence on certain personality traits relevant to sports performance. Conclusions: The study supports the notion that genetic factors, specifically the DRD2 Taq1D rs1800498 polymorphism, are associated with personality traits that may influence athletic performance. This insight contributes to the field of psychogenetics in sports, offering a deeper understanding of how genetics and personality interact to shape athletic capabilities

The post-war displacement of populations, the origin of which is commonly associated with the Yalta Conference, included around six million people on the Polish side alone (in a soulless approximation), which, at the time, constituted nearly a third of the entire population of the country. These figures speak for themselves: it is one of the largest collective experiences of Polish society after World War II and, as such, it should be ascribed a foundational character. In this book, Kinga Siewior assigns herself the task of verifying whether it is also one of the most significant post-war experiences of Polish society and whether it was/is/could be considered in the light of this foundationality. The author is interested in the issue of how post-war migrations of Polish population to the West were represented in recent decades, and how they are portrayed today, as well as what their place and role in the construction of Polish collective identity was considered to be in the past, and how it is seen nowadays. To word it differently: in this book, the author poses the question of whether Polish society can be regarded as a (post)migrational society

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest określenie celu, jakiemu służyły genealogie w żywotach świętych władczyń. W centrum analizy znajduje się Żywot św. Kingi, córki króla Węgier Beli IV i żony księcia krakowskiego Bolesława Wstydliwego, zmarłej w 1292 r. Autor korzysta także z innych źródeł hagiograficznych pochodzących z całego średniowiecza i z różnych krajów Europy. Genealogie te służyły wykazaniu, że zadatki na świętość bohaterka utworu odziedziczyła po przodkach. The present article seeks to define the purpose of the genealogies included in the lives of saintly female rulers. The analysis centres around the Life of Saint Kinga, who died in 1292; she was the daughter of King Bela IV of Hungary and wife of Prince Bolesław V the Chaste of Cracow. The author also uses other hagiographic sources from the entire period of the Middle Ages and various parts of Europe. These genealogies were to demonstrate that the protagonist of the text inherited her potential to be a saint from her ancestors

The post-war displacement of populations, the origin of which is commonly associated with the Yalta Conference, included around six million people on the Polish side alone (in a soulless approximation), which, at the time, constituted nearly a third of the entire population of the country. It can be effective as a preventive treatment for migraine, it has also found use in the maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder and acute mania,it is sometimes used in the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia, in the treatment of schizophrenia borderline personality disorder and acquired brain injury, this drug is used off-label. Its overdose can be fatal. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Patient information was collected from hospital records available in the clinical toxicology department. In addition, we conducted a literature review on sodium valproate treatment, its toxicity, side effects and pharmacokinetics using PubMed. CASE REPORT: A 57-year-old patient with a history of depressive disorders was admitted to the Clinical Department of Toxicology and Cardiology in Lublin for intentional intoxication with the drug Absenor (sodium valproate). The patient had taken 3 packages of Absenor 500 mg (300 tablets in total) for suicidal purposes. The determined concentration of valproic acid was 841 µg/ml, and the patient's condition was very severe. Despite the treatment administered-multiple attempts at gastric lavage, administration of activated charcoal, performance of hemodialysis procedures, administration of infusion of catecholamines, the patient died on the fifth day of hospitalization. CONCLUSION: An overdose of sodium valproate can be fatal. Keep this in mind when ordering this drug for patients with a positive history of suicide attempts. KEY WORDS: drug overdose; sodium valproate; sodium valproate overdose; sodium valproate poisoning; suicid

    Self-publishing – zarys najważniejszych problemów

The aim of the following article is to understand popularity of self-publishing phenomena in Poland. At the very begining author is explaining what is self-publishing, taking as an example three most popular self-publishing portals in Poland (Wydaje.pl, Virtualo and RW2010) and comparing them to the foreign self- -publishing portals. Author is writing about different types of self- -publishing: vanity publishing, subsided publishing, partnership self-publishing, whole self-publishing and self-publishing at the Internet platforms. Next part of the article is entitled discussions about advantages and disadvantages of selfpublishing and reception of this phenomena. Author writes about first self-publishing success (novels by Stephen King) and major, american stars of self -publishing in the effort of seeking polish self publishing success stories. It turnes out, that polish self-publishing market is lacking bestsellers and independent authors. Subsequently changes in publishing circuit are analyzed. Author compares self-publishing to second publishing circuit in Poland (1971–1989). Selfpublishing is described as samizdat without political context, in commercialized version. Theory of long tail (by Chris Anderson) “generation upload” theory (Jeff Gomez), cognitive surplus (Clay Shirky) and economical context of self-publishing (free access to publication) are recalled to understand popularity of independent self-publishing. Next author is analyzing an editor side of self-published e-books trying to compare it with traditional published book. It turned out, that independent authors not always follow editorial standards, but they are trying to follow them. They resign from the editorial freedom in order to use one developed by publishing standards – the aim is being understood by readers. In the last part author is referring to the status of an author in self-publishing, pointing changes (and refer to Roland Barthes, Michael Foucault, Walter Benjamin) – author is becoming the most important part of the communication chain in self-publishing by making decisions and staying in touch with a reader.
