    Preparation, processing and analysis of physical properties of calcium ferrite-CNTs/PET nano-composite

    The present work is focused on the preparation of composites based on Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and novel nano-hybrid filler composed of Calcium Ferrite (CF)-Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs), obtained by direct growth of CNTs on CF based iron catalysts. The carbon content in the hybrid filler was 76 wt%. Composites loaded with 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 wt% of filler were obtained by melt compounding and processed by thin-wall injection molding. Unfilled Poly(ethylene terephthalate) was processed using the same techniques. Structural characterization and physical properties (thermal, mechanical and electrical) were analyzed and correlated to the hybrid filler loading, and to the percentage of carbon nanotubes

    Effect of alternating humidity and dryness on the durability of adsorbent sheets used in open cycle adsorption processes

    Silica gel based composite materials are considered as promising materials in open-cycle adsorption processes for water vapor adsorption/desorption. However, their long-term performance under fluctuating humidity conditions remains unclear. This study investigates the role of alternating humid and dry aging cycles on the mechanical and water vapor adsorption properties of silica gel-polymer matrix composite sheets. Controlled humid/dry cycles mimicking real operating conditions were applied to the sheets, followed by tensile strength and water vapor adsorption tests to assess performance degradation. The aim was to understand how these cycles affect the sheets' ability to capture and release water vapor effectively over time. The findings show the material's good hydrothermal stability, maintaining mechanical strength and water vapor adsorption after aging. The 50–100–0 samples had the lowest performance post-aging (average strength and modulus of 1.13 MPa and 26.8 MPa, respectively). Critical conditions occur in long aging cycles, such as 40–1000 and 50–1000 batches, leading to substantial performance decline post-drying, hinting at slight permanent damage. The 50–1000 batch showed a tensile modulus of 34.8 MPa after 7 days of dry storage, about 18.8 % less than unaged samples. This information serves as a preliminary approach for optimizing the material design of these sheets for open-cycle adsorption applications. By identifying potential weaknesses arising from humidity cycling, the study paves the way for improvements that ensure long-term effectiveness and reliability in these systems

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Halochromic resorufin-GPTMS hybrid sol-gel: Chemical-physical properties and use as pH sensor fabric coating

    The hybrid GPTMS (3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane) gel containing the chromophore molecule of the litmus dye, Resorufin (7-Hydroxy-3H-phenoxazin-3-one), was prepared by sol-gel method through epoxy ring opening reaction catalyzed by traces of 1-methylimidazole in acidic ethanol solutions. The wet-gel solution was fully characterized by means of different spectroscopic techniques. Proton and het- eronuclear NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy have confirmed the immobilization of the Resorufin into the GPTMS polyethylene oxide polymer, through GPTMS epoxy ring opening and monomer diol-GPTMS con- densation/hydrolysis. The halochromic activity of the Resorufin-GPTMS hybrid sol-gel was monitored by UV–vis spectroscopy, in buffered solutions at different pH values, in comparison with the corresponding dye. FT-IR spectroscopy was also used on solid xerogel residue covering glass surface to demonstrate the attempted GPTMS epoxy-ring opening. The morphology of the treated and washed cotton samples, compared to the original one, was investigated by SEM, SEM-EDX and AFM microscopy analysis, in order to assess the aspect of the fibers after the different finishing treatments in the micrometric scale

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
