No full textAs a consequence of the French invasions in Portugal, the Portuguese court moves to Brazil and this colony develops very fast. This growth has made it a favorite destination for Portuguese emigration and, after the return of the king to Portugal, Brazil became an independent country. The newly created Brazilian empire remained attractive for thousands of Portuguese, many of whom would later return to their homeland with a favorable financial situation. Under these circumstances was Manoel Pinto when he returned to Portugal and started a family in Castelo de Paiva. However, unexpected events made of him a fugitive and took him back to Brazil, where a new episode set an unlikely path to his situation and to the outcome.Como consequência das invasões francesas a Portugal, dá-se a partida da corte portuguesa para o Brasil e o consequente desenvolvimento daquela colónia. Esse crescimento tornou-a num destino de eleição para a emigração portuguesa e levou a que,após o regresso do rei a Portugal,o Brasil se tornasse num país independente. O recém-criado império brasileiro manteve-se atrativo para milhares de portugueses, muito dos quais regressavam posteriormente à terra natal com uma favorável situação económica. Nessas circunstâncias, estava Manoel Pinto quando retornou a Portugal e constituiu família em Castelo de Paiva. Porém o imprevisto fez dele um foragido levando-o de novo a terras brasileiras, onde um novo acontecimento deu um rumo improvável à situação e ao desfecho que lhe seguiu

antropológica de Fernão Mendes Pinto aquando do seu contacto com a cultura
Oriental. É também nosso objectivo comprovar que a definição que o autor
tenta fazer do “Outro” oriental lhe vai permitir redescobrir a sua identidade.
O encontro de uma cultura nova permitiu ao homem de Quinhentos
iniciar o processo multicultural, e por conseguinte encetar o diálogo
intercultural. Na análise da Peregrinação tentaremos reflectir de que forma
Fernão Mendes Pinto foi influenciado por esse processo ao descrever o
“Outro” com o qual se encontrou, e em tantos aspectos tão diferente de si.
ABSTRACT: The present work intends to present an analysis of the anthropological
evolution of Fernão Mendes Pinto related to his contact with the oriental
culture. It is also our purpose to prove that through the definition that the author
tries to do of the “Other” he begins to rediscover his own identity.
The encounter with a new culture allowed the men of the 16h century
to begin the multicultural process, and consequently the intercultural dialogue.
In our analysis of the Peregrinação we will try to reflect about the way that
Fernão Mendes Pinto was influenced by the process of describing the “Other”,
with whom he contacted, and in so many ways so different from him
