Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The paper is dedicated to analyzing the ways of expressing the notion of quantity presented by preschool-age children from activities based on the Reggio Emilia approach. Guided by the question ‘What ways of expressing quantities are presented by preschool children from activities based on the Reggio Emilia Approach?’ we held a research with children aged four to six years in the context of three activities based on playfulness and dialogue. The qualitative research, of an explicative and explanatory nature, took as its approach Design-Based Research (DBR), in which activities were developed to mobilize strategies and resources to express quantities. The empirical material consists of field notes and transcripts of audio recordings of conversations and interactions with the children (wheel and individualized) and the children’s worksheets. The analysis pointed out different ways of expressing the quantity notion, which are circumscribed in the themes: estimation, counting, and numerical writing. The estimation was evidenced in the light of the children’s efforts to express quantities indicated in the tasks using drawings and verbalized justifications. The counting was used in distinct situations, as a way to determine the quantities requested in the activities. Numerical writing characterized the process of expressing quantities from the writing of numbers. As a result, we highlight the relevance of the Early Childhood Education teacher to provide children with situations in which they can mobilize and develop mathematical notions, such as quantity and number, developing their hundred languages, as proposed by education in Reggio Emilia. The activities proposed within of the DBR boosted the children’s ways of expressing quantity, developing the children’s multiple languages, at the same time as providing for listening, socialization, autonomy, and child protagonist.El artículo está dedicado a analizar las formas de expresar la noción de cantidad que presentan los niños en edad preescolar a partir de actividades basadas en el enfoque de Reggio Emilia. Guiados por la pregunta ¿Qué formas de expresar cantidades presentan los niños en edad preescolar a partir de actividades basadas en el Enfoque de Reggio Emilia?, Realizamos una investigación con niños de cuatro a seis años en el contexto de tres actividades basadas en la alegría y el diálogo. La investigación cualitativa, de carácter exploratorio y explicativo, tomó como enfoque la Investigación Basada en el Diseño (IBD), en la cual se desarrollaron actividades para movilizar estrategias y recursos para expresar cantidades. El material empírico consta de notas de campo y transcripciones de grabaciones de audio de conversaciones e interacciones con los niños (rueda e individualizadas) y las hojas de trabajo de los niños. El análisis señaló diferentes formas de expresar la noción de cantidad, que se circunscriben en los temas: estimación, conteo y escritura numérica. La estimación se manifestó a la luz del esfuerzo de los niños por expresar las cantidades indicadas en las tareas mediante dibujos y justificaciones verbalizadas, el conteo se utilizó en diferentes situaciones como una forma de determinar las cantidades solicitadas en las actividades. Escritura numérica que caracterizó el proceso de expresar cantidades a partir de la escritura de números. Como resultado, destacamos la relevancia del docente de Educación Infantil para brindar a los niños situaciones en las que puedan movilizarse y desarrollar nociones matemáticas, como cantidad y número, desarrollando sus cien idiomas, como propone la educación en Reggio Emilia. Las actividades propuestas en el ámbito de la IBD potenciaron las formas de expresión de la cantidad de los niños, desarrollando los múltiples lenguajes de los niños, al mismo tiempo que propiciaron la escucha, la socialización, la autonomía y el protagonismo del niño.O artigo dedica-se a analisar as formas de expressar a noção de quantidade apresentadas por crianças em idade pré-escolar a partir de atividades baseadas na Abordagem de Reggio Emilia. A pesquisa qualitativa, de natureza exploratória e explicativa, tomou como abordagem a Investigação Baseada em Design (IBD) em que foram desenvolvidas atividades mobilizadoras de estratégias e recursos para expressar quantidades. A contagem foi usada em diferentes situações como forma de determinar as quantidades solicitadas nas atividades. A escrita numérica caracterizou o processo de expressar quantidades a partir da escrita de números. Como resultado, evidenciamos a relevância do professor da Educação Infantil oportunizar para a criança situações em que possa mobilizar e desenvolver noções matemáticas, tais como quantidade e número, desenvolvendo as suas cem linguagens, conforme propõe a educação em Reggio Emilia. As atividades propostas no âmbito da IBD potencializaram nas crianças as formas de expressar quantidade, desenvolvendo as múltiplas linguagens das crianças, ao mesmo tempo em que propiciaram a escuta, socialização, autonomia e o protagonismo infantil
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
