Fitting Percentage of Body Fat to Simple Body Measurements
The dataset, created by Roger W. Johnson of Carleton College, presented in this article, contains body measurements for 252 men and can be used to illustrate multiple regression and to provide practice in model building. Some of these measurements include: body fat, age, weight, height and ten different body circumference measurements. The author shows how to "fit body fat to the other measurement using multiple regression" and provide a easy method to estimating body fat percentage. This is a good example of using regression and also model building
A rigorous approach to the technical implementation of legally defined marine boundaries
Placed on UMER with the consent of the author. © 2007 Mr. Roger W. FraserThe management and administration of legally defined marine boundaries in Australia is subject to a variety of political, legal and technical challenges. The purpose of this thesis is to address three of the technical challenges faced in the implementation of marine boundaries which cannot be dealt with by applying conventional land cadastre and land administration principles. The three challenges that are identified and addressed are (i) marine boundary delimitation and positioning uncertainty, (ii) the construction and maintenance of four dimensional marine parcels, and (iii) the modelling and management of marine boundary uncertainty metadata
Ekumeniczna Wspólnota z Taizé a zmiany polityczne w Polsce końca XX wieku
The principal aim of this article is to show the relationship between the Ecumenical Community of Taizé and Poles in the time of political changes in Poland at the end of the 20th century. The Youth Council initiated in the 1970s by the community, which was later transformed into the Young Adults European Meetings, created an opportunity to intensify the ecumenical process, but also to enable meetings of thousands of young Europeans from two antagonistic blocs, eastern and western, separated by the Iron Curtain between 1945 and 1989. Recently published documents of the authorities of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL), used by the author in the article, prove hostility of the communist regime towards the Catholic Church in Poland, but also reveal some methods used in this struggle. They also show that shortly before the Youth Council organized in France by the Taizé Community, the communist authorities appointed necessity to conduct actions aimed at weakening the Church in the area of ecumenism and the movements and organizations of lay people, which were slowly developing themselves that time. The Poles living in the communist state were accompanied by the Taizé brothers. Their dedication have been continued also after the collapse of the regime. The intensity of the events organized by the community has changed, as well as a number of participants of meetings in this French village and the Youth Adults European Meetings organized by Taizé. While during the time of communism there were only several dozen or hundred young participants from Poland, after the end of the regime, Poles in the number of tens of thousands dominated these events. During the political transformation Taizé has become one of the main foreign destinations for young Polish Christians, as well as a place of their natural integration with other young adults from the European Union countries. The person who contributed significantly to the inclusion of Poles in the activities of this community, both during the communist period and during the political transformation, was Pope John Paul II form Poland.
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Tradução, Florianópolis, 2013.Abstract : This study aims to investigate two translations of FLICTS, first children's book written by Ziraldo and first full-colored album for children produced in Brazil, with a view to discussing the different interactions between text and image that might occur within the translation of children's literature. Considered a landmark in Brazilian Children's Literature since its launch in 1969, its British version was translated by Silvia Caruana and published by the publishing house Roger Schlesinger in 1973 and its American English version was translated by Daniela Pinto, originally published by Melbooks in 1984 - subsequently also published by Editora Melhoramentos and commercialized in Brazil. The theoretical framework informing the study is based on the interface of Descriptive Translation Studies, Translation of Children's Literature and the Grammar of Visual Design. By the analyses of a multimodal corpus and a dossier about the history of this printed book, it was possible to note that the several changes along FLICTS publishing history have made up other possible readings on this work
The Log
“The Log” was a publication of the Champion Fibre Company, a major manufacturing plant in Canton, North Carolina. While images on its cover include a classroom and recreation, the short essay titled, “Want a Raise?” admonishes employees to work without expectation. “We will get more money only by doing more than we are paid to do,” author Roger W. Babson suggests. The pamphlet is a fold-out included in a larger, promotional publication titled, “Glimpses of the Plant of the Champion Fibre Co. / Canton, North Carolina." The entire run of The Log, from 1914 to 1960 is available in our Canton Champion Fibre Company collection
