This article presents new information in regards to the collection of drawings by J. C. Panyó preserved in the Library of Catalonia, as well as contributions from private collections. In the first place, the drawing of the monument of columns and lions dedicated to the celebrations of the arrival of the king and queen to Barcelona is analysed in order to amend the traditionally attributed chronology. This is followed by a close study of the drawing of the Holy Thursday monument in Tura Church in Olot, of which a new, more thorough version has also been discovered. Lastly, this paper includes a bundle of letters between Panyóand Esteve Estorch, a merchant from Olot. These documents evince that Panyó wasa versatile artist and designer, since the master was not only a pedagogue, painter and decorator, but he also designed civil buildings and made artistic contributions to religious buildings.

The article continues with the edition of the second part of the youth diary that was written between 1958 and 1962 by the Catalan ecclesiastic and historian Josep Maria Marquès Planagumà (1939-2007). The pages extend from 1960 to the middle of 1962 and reflect not only the personality of its author but the lifestyle of a Catalan seminarian who, in addition, was a servant of the bishop, that is, he performed domestic services and lived in the Episcopal Palace. This time also coincides with the years before the start of the Second Vatican Council (1962) and the priestly ordination of its author (1963)L’article continua amb l’edició de la segona part del diari de joventut que entre 1958 i 1962 va redactar l’eclesiàstic i historiador català Josep Maria Marquès i Planagumà (1939-2007).

The level of advancement in the understanding of the mechanical properties of volcanic rocks is comparatively lower than that of sedimentary rocks. As part of the SUCCEED Project (Synergetic Utilisation of CO2 Storage Coupled with Geothermal Energy Deployment), which aims to investigate the feasibility of injecting captured and produced CO2 into the reservoirs to enhance geothermal production and achieve permanent CO2 storage at the Hellisheiði Geothermal Field in Iceland, this experimental research provides significant insights into the petrophysical and mechanical properties of the volcanic rocks collected from surface outcrops. The subsurface in Hellisheiði is mainly built up of hyaloclastite formations and interglacial basaltic lavas. During a field campaign samples were collected in different outcrops, ensuring that the samples were of high quality and sufficiently diverse to enable comprehensive analysis. Four samples per block and rock type have been prepared from the collected blocks, and they have been subjected to different laboratory tests to evaluate their petrophysical properties, such as porosity, density, and permeability, and their geomechanical behavior, using Unconfined Compression Test (UCS), Active-Source Acoustic Test, and Splitting Tensile Strength Test. Additionally, laboratory experiments have been conducted to investigate the impact of rapid cooling on rock damage due to thermal fracturing. The results show that there are interdependent relationships between porosity, bulk density, ultimate strength, Young's modulus, and wave velocities that can be observed when considering average values per rock. The rocks studied showed a negative correlation between porosity and other parameters and a direct correlation between ultimate strength and Young's Modulus. When examining individual rock samples, no significant correlations were observed between porosity and other parameters, however, those correlations where evident when comparing between different rock types, emphasizing the importance of analyzing rock properties from a broader perspective. The rocks studied could be classified into five units based on their petrophysical and mechanical properties. Ordered from higher porosity and lower mechanical parameters, these units are: unit 1 consists of hyaloclastite HH-1, unit 2 includes porous basalts HBA-18 and HPB-23, unit 3 consists of low-porosity basalts HB-4 and HBimp-9, unit 4 is made up of dike ND-6, and unit 5 comprises gabbro G. This implies that there is a notable variation in the properties of rocks between different units, but the properties of rocks within the same unit do not differ significantly. Volcanic rocks have a significant amount of unconnected porosity, which, if connected, can enhance the storage capacity of the reservoir and improve the reactive surface area of the rocks in contact with the reinjected fluid, leading to a more efficient mineral storage process. The results of a thermal shock conducted to simulate reservoir and injection temperatures (270ºC and 60ºC) have shown no significant changes in the petrophysical and mechanical properties of the rocks, indicating that this temperature difference does not increase the effective porosity nor compromise the integrity of the reservoir. This study validates the potential use of certain rocks collected from surface outcrops in Hellisheiði as reservoir analogs for future geological models, particularly those with lower porosity.SUCCEED ProjectApplied Earth Science

    No full text
International audienceBetter known for his essays than for his poetry, Senegalese author Felwine Sarr has nonetheless developed a large body of literary work, borrowing from the short genre, whether in the poetic collection Ishindenshin or in his experiments in poetic prose in the works Dahij, La saveur des derniers mètres or 105 rue Carnot. This article intends to approach these texts from the perspective of places, showing how they encapsulate narratives, imaginaries, and arts of living. Weaving together the concrete places of his childhood in Senegal, those he has travelled throughout his life, in France, Rwanda, Japan, and those that run through his multiple readings, Sarr draws a poetic cartography in accordance with a relational ethic open to the world

The Architecture of Disclosure: A Critique of Symbolic Phenomenism

    No full text
This paper provides a critical analysis of Robert Gervais’s 2025 treatise, Symbolic Phenomenism: A Treatise on Function and Form. The core of Gervais’s work is a "daring reclamation of the objective world," arguing that symbols are not mere social constructs but are the "true names of things" that reveal real structures within the fabric of being. The critique explores several key dimensions of the framework: Epistemological Validation: While critics argue the theory is unfalsifiable or circular, the author likens the apprehension of symbolic truths to mathematical discipline, where perception requires rigorous intellectual and spiritual formation. Form and Function: The paper examines Gervais's claim that functional utility must align with form. This is illustrated through the ontological significance of beauty in Victorian infrastructure and the symbolic weight of biological morphology in gender. Political and Ontological Implications: The treatise challenges contemporary egalitarian and liberal presuppositions, asserting that hierarchy and sexual dimorphism are genuine ontological structures essential for human flourishing rather than arbitrary instruments of power. Philosophical Limitations: The author identifies a significant underdeveloped area in Gervais’s treatment of mathematics, specifically regarding abstract algebra and non-Euclidean geometries, which possess an objectivity not fully accounted for in his current framework. Methodology of Restoration: To overcome modern "symbolic blindness," the paper outlines a pragmatic path of symbolic restoration. This involves cultivating the "remaining embers" of awareness found in the experience of beauty and the sublime, and engaging with "native speakers" of symbolic literacy

    No full text
International audienceThis article analyzes the representation of the collapse of the socia- list regime in Guinea. It focuses particularly on texts written locally at the beginning of the 1980s, which remain unpublished or with a very low circulation. The author chooses to focus on the very local level with local publications in order to document the writing strategies of Guineans, faced with the dereliction of the socialist government. Abdoulaye Fanyé Touré, Fatima Barry, and Commandant Kaba 41, amongst others, chose different ways of describing their country, and this is representative of the comple- xity of the relationship between intellectuals and power. That kind of literary material and archives questions the role of fiction and its relation with politics: on the one hand, fictional works are useful in propaganda and a key element in the making of the socialist utopia (and still vivid in Guinean music today), but on the other hand, fiction can be a very efficient means of satire. This role of denun- ciation, of the Camp Boiro for instance, will be addressed in the second part of this article.

    No full text
This article proposes an analysis of La plus secrète mémoire des hommes , the most recent novel by Senegalese author Mohamed Mbougar Sarr, winner of the Prix Goncourt in 2021. In the form of a roman-monde or world-novel, this text traverses the long twentieth century, exploring the relationships between literature and the universal. The character of Elimane, at the center of the narrative, brings into focus the racialized reception of Francophone literature and critical responses to its authors. Elimane’s trajectory serves as a fictional double not only for that of Yambo Ouologuem, but also for a whole series of other writers targeted by media cabals, such as Camara Laye, Bakary Diallo, and René Maran. The article shows that in representing this racialized reception, Mbougar Sarr uses fiction itself to play with these critical labels. The interplay between history and literature staged in the novel contributes to the elaboration of a new literary universal, taking up and glossing Souleymane Bachir Diagne’s notion of the “lateral universal.” Pastiche, irony, inconsistencies, games with doubles and mirrors, and the tangle of intertextuality are all mobilized by Mbougar Sarr to emphasize the power of fiction to resist racialized readings
