No full textComment réaliser une ethnographie dans un contexte autoritaire, dans un pays où la surveillance participe à un climat de méfiance, où les données se dérobent? Cet article s’appuie sur une ethnographie sur les entrepreneurs en Éthiopie. S’y installer a permis à la chercheure de faire de son expérience un aiguillon de la recherche. La surveillance, la faiblesse des informations et l’incertitude qui en découlent sont apparues autant comme des freins au travail de la chercheure que comme des révélateurs des conditions dans lesquelles les entrepreneurs étudiés travaillent. Entrer sur le terrain a nécessité de mettre à distance les institutions de contrôle et de surveillance, mais aussi d’adopter une posture de marginale sécante. Faute d’information fiable, l’analyse des rumeurs dont la circulation est amplifiée par le contexte autoritaire lui a ainsi permis de saisir à la fois la structuration de la communauté et la réalité de la place qu’elle y occupait.How do you do an ethnographic study under an authoritarian regime, in a country where surveillance is part of a climate of mistrust and data hides? This article is based on an ethnographic study of entrepreneurs in Ethiopia. Going there was a chance to use my experience as a stimulus for the research. Surveillance, scanty information and the resulting uncertainty both constituted a series of brakes on my research and revealed the conditions in which the entrepreneurs I studied work. Going into the field required me to distance myself from the control and surveillance institutions, but I also had to adopt a position on the margins yet intersecting the situation. For lack of reliable information, I analyzed the rumours that circulate even more easily in an authoritarian context, and this allowed me to understand both how the community was structured and the reality of my place in it
