An Exploration of Poor Female Understanding about Health Hazards of Indoor Air Pollution in Bangladesh

    No full text
This paper will identify health hazards associated with indoor air pollution (IAP) in Bangladesh. Research into IAP in Bangladesh has been neglected for many decades. This neglect may reflect aspect of the marginalization of women in Bangladeshi society, especially as cooking is considered a social responsibility of women. The main purposes of the paper are to examine types of the IAP-related health threats female domestic cook experienced and to understand their level of awareness about the link between IAP exposure and poor health outcomes. Two hundred female domestic cook in Rajshahi City, Bangladesh, were interviewed by using a semi-structured questionnaire interview method. Levels of monthly household income and of education, oven and fuel types are used as proxy determinants of class. Based on educational level, respondents were categorized into three classes: illiterate, primary (1-5 level) and secondary (6-10 level). It found that the higher the educational level the respondents had, the more they were likely to be aware of health effects associated with IAP. The author draws a conclusion that women with less monthly household income (below 5000 BD Taka) and minimum level of education, using solid fuels and mud-ovens in poor ventilated environment, are more likely to be exposed to IAP and, as a consequence, have greater health risks than others. Finally, as recommended, if the Bangladesh Government is able to supply green and clean fuel sources with subsidies for poor women, it would be easier for Bangladesh to achieve the 3rd Sustainable Development Goal—ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages—at the right time (2030).Smoke in the home, the fourth greatest cause of death and diseases in the world’s poorest countries, kills more people than malaria does, and almost as many as unsafe water and sanitation. It kills 1.6 million people annually, nearly a million of them are children. Most of the rest are women (Smith et al., 2005)

This essay is comparing two authors and the way they make use of and explain some of the archaeological methods and artifacts through their books. The first author is the Swedish archaeologist Stig Welinder, who has written Jordbrukets första femtusen år (The First Five Thousand Years of Agriculture). The second author is the American archaeologist and writer Adrian Praetzellis, who has written the book Death by Theory. These books are very different in some ways, but not in others. The main difference is that Death by Theory is belles-lettres while Jordbrukets första femtusen år is science. Both authors explain and in some way apply the use of the terms ?artifact? and ?ethnoarchaeology?, which is the two main subjects of comparison in this essay. The way they present these subjects, through their different styles of writing, is compared and discussed. The discussion as follows is also about how the reader may get influenced by a writer's style of writing, but also the means of how the authors may have come to certain conclusions

Book Review: Deep-sea benthic foraminifera from Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary strata in the South Atlantic - taxonomy and paleoecology. By J.G.V. WIDMARK in Fossils and Strata, No. 43

    No full text
Joen Widmark has enriched the literature on benthic foraminiferal taxonomy with a thorough treatment of the deep-sea faunas of the South Atlantic (Walvis Ridge area) Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary interval. All taxa have a detailed description, and most are illustrated with the excellent pictures for which Fossils and Strata is renowned. The differential diagnoses, indicating the differences with related and similar taxa, are extremely useful. The taxonomic designations are backed by extensive comparisons with the Cushman Collection in the Smithsonian Institution, Washington. The author managed dextrously to avoid the traditional taxonomic pitfalls. He should especially be congratulated for refraining from adding new species to an already redundant taxonomy, and for avoiding the assignment of taxa too easily to existing species, and instead listing them with a 'confert' prefix. Of the 132 taxa treated, 55 are determined at species level, 12 are compared with existing species (using 'cf.'), 29 taxa are left in open nomenclature and 36 infrequent taxa are lumped at a generic level. The generic classification largely follows that of Loeblich and Tappan (1988). A minor point of concern is Widmark's identification of Angulogavelinella avnimelechi, which, according to the description, lacks the highly characteristic apertural features of AngulogavelinelIa. Biogeographically its presence in the South Atlantic also falls far out of its well-established distribution in Europe and North Africa. Another negative detail, though completely outside the influence of the author: the preservation of the material could have been slightly better. In the introductory part of the paper, Joen Widmark gives a detailed and useful overview of the existing Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary studies concerning benthic foraminifera. The common points as well as the differences between these studies are underlined. Furthermore, the author makes a very laudable effort to discuss the faunal patterns in the light of modem ideas on benthic foraminiferal ecology, which tend to consider organic flux to the benthic ecosystem and bottom water oxygenation as much more important parameters than water mass characteristics, which have traditionally been considered as the main factor structuring the benthic faunas. However, as very rightly observed by the author, it is a very hazardous affair to assign microhabitat characteristics to individual species on the basis of test morphology. This is even more so when taxa which have been extinct for more than 50 million years are concerned. Erroneous microhabitat inferences could at least partially explain the discrepancies shown in literature, in which some authors show an important increase of the infaunal component at the boundary, whereas others show an opposite trend. In summary, this excellent taxonomic and ecological update will be indispensable to all workers on this type of faunas we congratulate Joen Widmark for this very attractive contribution to the foraminiferal literature!status: Publishe

    No full text
This thesis conducts with a subsequent phase of design development project of IPA booster seat. According to the need of Joen Erikoiskaluste Oy, a local furniture manufacturer company located in Joensuu, Finland, the first round of the design development was completed by Saara Newton in the year of 2011. To develop it further, the second round, which is to say, the subsequent design development is confided to the author. The refinement of the user-oriented design is based on a deep study of usability, including the MDF material, the ergonomic, and the European standard safety requirement. Moreover, the user testing is the important basis to examine the design. Last but not least, besides the MDF and pine wood seat models, the logo and the user guide design also has been developed as the complement of branding. In conclusion, the IPA booster seat design development is a comprehensive application of both 3D programming and graphic design skills

Nu-DESC DK: the Danish version of the nursing delirium screening scale (nu-DESC)

    No full text
Abstract Background Delirium is one of the most common complications among elderly hospitalized patients, postoperative patients and patients on intensive care units with a prevalence between 11 and 80%. Delirium is associated with higher morbidity and mortality. Reliable instruments are required to detect delirium at an early time point. The Nursing-Delirium Screening Scale (Nu-DESC) is a screening tool with high sensitivity and good specificity. However, there is currently no official translation after ISPOR guidelines of any Danish delirium assessment tools available. Thereby hampering the implementation of 2017 ESA-Guidelines on postoperative Delirium in the clinical routine. The aim of this study is to provide an official translation and evaluation of the Nu-DESC into Danish following the ISPOR process. Methods The Nu-DESC was translated after International Society for Pharmacoecomonics and Outcome Research (ISPOR) guidelines to Danish after permission of the original author, and is evaluated by medical staff and finally approved by the original author. Results All steps of the ISPOR guideline were consecutively followed, without any major problems. The evaluation of the Nu-DESC DK regarding its intelligibility and feasibility showed no statistically significant differences between nurses and medical doctors ratings. The translation was authorized and approved by the original author. Conclusion This study provides the Nu-DESC DK, an official Danish delirium screening instrument, which can detect all psychomotor types of delirium

The distribution and transport of water in oil paintings: A numerical moisture diffusion model

    No full text
Oil paintings are complex, multi-layered systems that are prone to chemical degradation. While it is increasingly recognised that water plays an important role in these degradation reactions, little is known about moisture concentrations in oil paint systems and their temporal variation in response to fluctuating ambient air humidity. This knowledge is necessary to further preventive conservation, specifically to establish optimal environmental conditions to safeguard works of art for future generations. We developed a transient one-dimensional moisture transport model based on Fickian diffusion enabling the integration of experimentally recorded relative humidity data. Moisture sorption and transport data for painting materials have been reviewed from literature showing that each component of a painting has rather distinct properties. Including the properties of the individual layers enabled predicting the behaviour of a multi-layered painting system. A sensitivity study indicated that the response of a multilayer is determined by the combination of diffusion coefficients, isotherm shapes, maximum water contents, layer thicknesses, period of RH fluctuation and stacking order of the layers. Finally, the model was employed to investigate a case study of 18th-century painted wall hangings in a historic house to illustrate the insights that can be gained from this approach and the types of conservation-related questions that can be answered.Team Joris Di

VIVALDI NELJÄ VUODENAIKAA : Lieksan Nuorisojouset Vivaldi-haasteiden parissa

Abstract In this thesis, the author recorded the process of teaching the Lieksan Nuorisojouset -youth string orchestra as they played Antonio Vivaldi's Four seasons in two concerts on spring 2009. Lieksa Nuorisojouset operates in Pielisen Karjalan music school in Lieksa, and strength varies between 15 and 20 young string players. The Vivaldi-productions' purpose was to give the orchestra a chance to learn this difficult piece and acquaint themselves into musical challenges. Other goals for the production were to increase the local musical activities and realizing the wishes of some long term musicians of the or- chestra. Lieksan Nuorisojouset presented Vivaldi's Four seasons in two concerts kept in Joen- suu's church on 4 April 2009 and in Lieksa's church on 26 April of the same year. The concertos, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter solo parts were played by long term musicians, violinist Minna Nevalainen, Anu Horttanainen, Anna Saarelainen and Maija Matikainen. Both the soloists and the orchestra succeeded exemplarily and received commendations from the audience. From the first concert the author felt that the orchestra had valiantly performed a diffi- cult opus. The clarity of notes, rhythmics and tempo had some problems, but the orches- tra performed boldly and gave themselves to the work. In the latter concert rhythmics were clearer and the tempo stayed course better than in the previous concert. The musi- cians reported they had enjoyed the concerts, and that the work gave them enthusiasm and joy. The conductor was quite pleased with her own work, although the score tied her down too much in the concerts. The report introduces Lieksan Nuorisojouset -orchestra's work, capabilities, artistic lev- el and conducting in practice. Central themes are Vivaldi's opus's contents and realizing it with a youth-orchestra. Despite the challenges, the production proved that a work this technical and musical can be done, when the musicians and the conductor trust each other. The report brings forth among other things the techniques used during lessons, with which the musicians' skills were honed, and the conductor's view on working with orchestras and what it gives to the young
