Le «buone letture». 2. Giovanni Casati

No full text
The study consists of two parts; the first is dedicated to the history of the Federazione italiana delle biblioteche circolanti cattoliche since its foundation (1904) up to 1912 and was published in the previous volume of the «Nuovi Annali », XXVII (2013), pp. 137-163. In this second part, the author outlines the intellectual figure of Giovanni Casati, who directed the «Rivista di letture» from 1912 to 1944, transforming the magazine of the Federation in a journal engaged in the spreading of Catholic culture. To this militant engagement Casati matched an intense publishing program, which found its expression in the publication of literary essays, manuals and reference works

Comico e tragico del diritto nella novellistica italiana: il novelliere di Giovanni Sercambi

No full text
In the late medieval and humanistic novellas, owing to their very realistic character, the right is an important central and inevitable element in community life. Giovanni Sercambi’s novelliere is no exception even if the author lacks a legal culture, nor is specifically interested in right. This essay intends to analyze these novellas under this profile to verify what kind of right they consider and how the stories are enriched

Chapter Atto biografo di Giovanni Gualberto

No full text
The paper examines the Vita s. Iohannis Gualberti by Atto, reconstructing its genesis and fortune. Probably the author wrote this hagiography when he was abbot and before becoming bishop of Pistoia. He re-elaborated the Life of the saint by Andrea of Strumi, adapting it to a changed historical and ecclesiastical context. The text was successful among the Vallombrosan Order and it was used by later hagiographers to create epitomes and rewritings of the Life of Giovanni Gualberto

Thanks to two documents published in this article, the author ascribes two altar clothes stored in the Treasure of Palermo’s Cathedral, coming from the movables concerning the chapel of the Crucified, to Giovanni Rassanelli called "Florentine". One of them is identified as the one embroidered with coral, which is part of the Treasure’s current exhibition

Frankenstein Rather Than Faust? The Decline of Limit-Surpassing Forces

No full text
Giovanni Bottiroli’s article “Frankenstein Rather Than Faust?” aims to problematize and investigate further the challenge to the notion of «rigid identity» proposed by extant scholarship. In order to do so, Bottiroli dismantles a univocal understanding of «identity», bringing to light the polysemy and porosity intrinsic to this term. In order to do so, the author discusses here different modes of identity, concentrating on two in particular: coincidence and non-coincidence with oneself. Taking this distinction as his point of departure, Bottiroli applies these interpretative frameworks to two of the most significant figures of Western imagination, Frankenstein and Faust

Assessment Development in Measuring Students’ Context-rich Problemsolving Ability in Physics

This study developed 17-item physics problem-solving ability to measure the students’ performance in solving context-rich problems. In this process, 8 students were interviewed on how they solve physics problems. Qualitative analysis showed 37 latent attributes that describe their ability. Attributes were surveyed to 370 students to establish psychometrics via rating scale-graded response model (RSGRM) and to ensure psychometric assumptions through Mokken’s scale analysis (MSA). Analyses showed that there are 17 valid items or set of outcomes in designing assessment tasks that define what is to be learned as a problem solver. It represents a unidimensional construct (SRMSR=0.043) that provides more information to person ability that ranges from -2.0 to +2.0 values (SE2=0.81). The measurement information generated useful information in describing the students’ problem-solving ability. It also demonstrated a 3-ordered response expectations that could represent the solver’s actual reasoning as a a cognitive structure. This study noted that the ordered response requires further study and exploration

Jigsaw Technique in Learning Physics and Problem-solving Dimensions of Senior High School Students

Physics was perceived as a difficult subject with in dire need for cooperative learning and problem-solving skills rubric modified from Jennifer Docktor, namely, useful description, physics approach, the specific application of physics, mathematical procedures, and logical progression. This study aimed to determine and describe the effectiveness of jigsaw technique in physics learning and problem-solving skills which employed pretest-posttest and quasi-experimental research design with a 95% confidence level. There were two groups included in the study as control and the experimental group which received jigsaw technique and traditional teaching respectively as treatment. Independent samples t-test results showed the use of jigsaw technique as cooperative learning has a statistical difference on the post-test and post-rubric scores against the control group with the large effect size in which the students showed a proficient performance in learning physics and problem-solving skills with the common use of useful description and physics approach. There is no significant difference on the pre-test and pre-rubric scores between the control and experimental group with the p-value of 0.772 and 0.019. Moreover, this study revealed that the experimental group struggled with mathematical procedures and logical progression posting low percentage gain. Overall this study concludes that students' exposure to jigsaw technique improved physics learning

Conceptions of Learning Physics among University of Mindanao Students: A Validation Study

The students’ conception in learning physics profoundly influences learners’ characteristics vis-à-vis learning outcomes. This study examined the validity of the models of conceptions in learning physics based on Tsai's original framework (2004) among randomly selected University of Mindanao students (n=321). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the second-order factor structure (Model C) showed an acceptable fit (RMSEA=0.068, CFI=0.93, TLI=0.92) which demonstrated lower information criteria such as AIC, and BIC against other models given with the valid constructs (Raykov rho>0.7). It revealed the composition, and factor correlation (0.72) of 2 domains of conception such as quantitative and qualitative learning aspect with acceptable factor loadings (λ=0.5 to λ=0.98) of its constructs and items. The analysis via generalized partial-credit model through item response theory (IRT) analysis showed that the items could distinguish students’ conceptions via item difficulty and discrimination thresholds. Given the valid domains and constructs, this study could provide meaningful insights to improve physics instruction, inform learner characteristics and learning outcomes. It should be noted that teachers should design problem tasks that evoke students’ qualitative-quantitative reasoning to produce meaningful attention to learning. Investigation of interplay between students’ conceptions, problem-solving ability, motivation, and self-regulation situated in varied environments requires further study
