Flame Front Propagation in an Optical GDI Engine under Stoichiometric and Lean Burn Conditions
Lean fueling of spark ignited (SI) engines is a valid method for increasing efficiency and reducing nitric oxide (NOx) emissions. Gasoline direct injection (GDI) allows better fuel economy with respect to the port-fuel injection configuration, through greater flexibility to load changes, reduced tendency to abnormal combustion, and reduction of pumping and heat losses. During homogenous charge operation with lean mixtures, flame development is prolonged and incomplete combustion can even occur, causing a decrease in stability and engine efficiency. On the other hand, charge stratification results in fuel impingement on the combustion chamber walls and high particle emissions. Therefore, lean operation requires a fundamentally new understanding of in-cylinder processes for developing the next generation of direct-injection (DI) SI engines. In this paper, combustion was investigated in an optically accessible DISI single cylinder research engine fueled with gasoline. Stoichiometric and lean operations were studied in detail through a combined thermodynamic and optical approach. The engine was operated at a fixed rotational speed (1000 rpm), with a wide open throttle, and at the start of the injection during the intake stroke. The excess air ratio was raised from 1 to values close to the flammability limit, and spark timing was adopted according to the maximum brake torque setting for each case. Cycle resolved digital imaging and spectroscopy were applied; the optical data were correlated to in-cylinder pressure traces and exhaust gas emission measurements. Flame front propagation speed, flame morphology parameters, and centroid motion were evaluated through image processing. Chemical kinetics were characterized based on spectroscopy data. Lean burn operation demonstrated increased flame distortion and center movement from the location of the spark plug compared to the stoichiometric case; engine stability decreased as the lean flammability limit was approached
This dissertation analyzes the female characters in the romance novel "Pedro Paramo", written by Juan Rulfo in 1955. The novel investigates the construction of the representation of women and how they fictionally constitute the relations between men and women in the society of the Mexican Revolutionary era. To understand how Rulfo creates these personages, I select some of them, and through documentary and fictional bibliographic research, I develop a reading on the construction of these female roles. The aesthetic and fictional development of the psychological profiles of this romance novel attempts to show a decadent rural society where everyday life and relationships are governed by disenchantment and the hope(lessness) of a different story

Writing with the Ghost: Specters of Narration in Anil’s Ghost by Michael Ondaatje
This paper proposes an analysis of Anil’s Ghost (2000) by Michael Ondaatje in the attempt to overcome a marginalisation of Sri Lankan literary production, both in the canon of the contemporary South Asian novel, and postcolonial criticism. The novel is set in a Sri Lanka ravaged by the civil war between Sinhalese and Tamils that plagued the country for about a quarter of a century. The war represents a pivotal historical and political circumstance that has attracted the attention of many Sri Lankan
literary authors for the last 30 years. Such scrutiny sometimes put in the foreground the active influence that past events still exert in the present, an influence that is often invisible, hidden or neglected. This is also true for Ondaatje. The author chooses to focus on the investigations of a forensic anthropologist who has returned from the United States to her native Sri Lanka in order to recover the identity of a skeleton abandoned in a zone protected by the government. In her surveys to solve the mystery behind the identity of the nameless victim, and uncover the truth about the mass killings plaguing the region, not only does Anil’s quest represent a new generation’s attempt to give voice to the voiceless victims of wars and national conflicts but also provides her author with a narrative space made of voids, gaps and blind spots.
Attention to such narrative breaks provides space for truths that prove essential to making visible those unaccountable processes through which social authorities and symbolic formations interacted during those warring years. Following Jacques Derrida (2016) and Homi Bhabha (1990), the aim of my paper consists in showing that Ondaatje’s novel belongs to a wave of literary fiction concerned with (and even haunted by) the ‘ghosts’ produced by the violence of the recently ended war. In
Ondaatje’s literary effort the Civil War works as a moment of temporal negotiation, whose dreadful events are used to highlight the need to recover history in the clash between historical happenings, subjective experience and the distortions of memory
When Narration is Made Flesh: An Affective Reading of Geetanjali Shree's The Empty Space
This paper examines Geetanjali Shree’s The Empty Space (2011) as an exemplary novel exploring the performative power of language in order to re-create an episode of violence somewhere in the Indian sub-continent. Describing the explosion of a bomb in a university cafe, the narration makes events emerge as the product of a field of forces relying on the bodily perception and sensorial participation of the reader. The essay focuses on the ways through which Shree’s novel shuns hermeneutic or representational readings of violence in favour of a skin or ‘haptic’ writing whose performative power relocates a story of violence from its geographical location to the body of the reader. In acknowledging the human body as the shared ground of any possible communication, the author attempts to overcome the divisive binarisms and cultural juxtapositions brought about by the ocularcentric understandings of knowledge and culture
Abstract : This work first presents a research that has focused on the investigation of the relationship between electric load and temperature in the Island of Santa Catarina and the influence of the temperature on short-term load forecasting regarding different temperature intervals. Based on historic data of load and temperature, it is built a load over temperature curve from a third-degree polynomial approximation, which is used to estimate the influence of the temperature on the load and the nonlinear relationship between these variables. For the studied region it has been shown that there is a central temperature interval with minimum influence on demand, while above and below that interval, respectively, direct and inverse relationships with the behavior of the load is observed. Furthermore, the load prediction accuracy of a neural network is affected by the temperature range considered. This study may produce as result a better scaling on load demand, resulting in financial gain to the distributors. Based on this knowledge we propose a correction method for the neural network that minimizes the prediction error generated by the temperature ranges that most affect the load forecasting. Experimental studies suggested that a neural network which initially showed instability when subjected to temperature changes after correction, managed to reduce forecast error to rates very similar to the normal days
The article reflects about the use of humour in teaching sociological, political and anthropological contentes in high school, as well as its contribution to critical reflection. We seek, through the teaching stage experience in the course of Ciências Sociais, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), to understand how the humour – by irony, sarcasm, laughing, etc. – affects teaching and learning. We investigat concepts related to humour and its different manifestations, emphasizing its relation to the understanding and construction of sociological, political and anthropological concepts, through a confrontation with an exclusively academic and scientific language, which can hold off the student from knowledge. This confrontation occurs in the critical analysis of the concepts discourse, discipline, power relations, truth, science and language, by Michel Foucault, field and symbolic capital of Pierre Bourdieu, profanation of Giorgio Agamben, among others. We observed a positive change in the behavior and students learning, compared to the classes taught by the teacher of the discipline, whose stance was expressed by the traditionalism of an expository and contentbased lecture. The paper intends to contribute for the teaching of a critical and reflexive sociology nearest to young people, using language familiar to them
O Riso de Fausto
This article constitutes an inquiry into one of the most subtle themes in Thomas Mann's novel 'Doctor Faustus' – namely, Adrian Leverkühn’s laughter. Its aim is to establish a connection between a specific element within the novel (Adrian's laughter) and the overarching theme of artistic creation in the modern age. Not only does the author explicitly link the novel to the broader concept of artistic creation, which is its central concern, but the presence of Theodor Adorno, who was both a reader and critic of the work further underscores this connection. Consequently, the question that guides this study is the following: In what way does Adrian's laughter intersect with his own artistic creation? Throughout this article, we make associations with Stanley Cavell's ideas on acknowledgment and the skepticism which refers to its failure. Theorists such as Bergson, Baudelaire, and Morreall provide the foundation for theories of laughter. What’s more, in the essay, the presence of laughter in other Faustian interpretations written in the first half of the twentieth century will also be comparatively addressed. Thus, in this study, Adrian's unique position in the Faustian landscape is shown to be connected to the eruption of laughter, which, far from being a minor detail, proves to be crucial for understanding his artistic production.O presente artigo é uma investigação sobre “uma das menores recorrências” do romance Doutor Fausto de Thomas Mann, a saber: o riso de Adrian Leverkühn.
