The "Felix" Prince-Condottiero in Humanist Literature: The portrayal of Alfonso the Magnanimous’s "Felicitas"

    No full text
This essay analyses the concept of "felicitas" as a political attribute associated to the figure of the prince and military leader in Italian Renaissance literature. This use of the complex idea of "felicitas", drawn from the classical tradition, appears especially in historiographical and political works devoted to the deeds of important rulers and condottieri and are informed by ideological implications. In particular, the chapter focuses on works produced in the context of the kingdom of Naples which can be considered as significant case studies: Bartolomeo Facio’s historical text on Alfonso of Aragon; his "De viris illustribus"; and Biondo Flavio’s works addressed to the Magnanimous. In this output, the political leader is celebrated, and at the same time legitimized, through the description of his successful and virtuous profile in the concrete historical dimension. The "felicitas" is seen as a fundamental attribute of this ideal image of ruler, becoming an inborn gift corresponding with a natural inclination towards success

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Maria Callas

The book profiles Maria Callas (1923-1976) as a singer-actress, illustrating her artistic journey through the directors with whom she collaborated during her career, from her Athenian years to her encounter with her beloved Pasolini.

    No full text
