Father Andrew Mullen 1790-1818: a study in early nineteenth century spirituality

This thesis is laid out in three parts: Part I. The life and death of Andrew Mullen. The life is based, to a large extent, on a long letter to his mother, Catherine Mullen, dated 7 January 1810. The letter gives a definite insight into his spirituality based on his membership of the Archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. There is a hint that he had a premonition of an early death. Part II. The burial of Andrew Mullen and the immediate cult to him This is based on documentary evidence. Part III. Most of this part is a catalogue of testimonies taken from 1993 onwards. Then there is the conclusion on the popular devotion to Andrew Mullen stressing the theological aspect of the subject. In the course of writing the thesis it was decided to separate the documentary evidence from the oral tradition. This was advantageous in developing the thesis, and the documents provided a secure basis for the oral tradition. Two pieces of information were found in March 1997. They are death notices: 2 January 1819, The Leinster Journal and 7 January 1819, The Car low Morning Post. There is a slight discrepancy between the two on the date of his death. Also this discrepancy shows a slight difference from the date of the tombstone

African origin of the malaria parasite Plasmodium vivax.

    No full text
Plasmodium vivax is the leading cause of human malaria in Asia and Latin America but is absent from most of central Africa due to the near fixation of a mutation that inhibits the expression of its receptor, the Duffy antigen, on human erythrocytes. The emergence of this protective allele is not understood because P. vivax is believed to have originated in Asia. Here we show, using a non-invasive approach, that wild chimpanzees and gorillas throughout central Africa are endemically infected with parasites that are closely related to human P. vivax. Sequence analyses reveal that ape parasites lack host specificity and are much more diverse than human parasites, which form a monophyletic lineage within the ape parasite radiation. These findings indicate that human P. vivax is of African origin and likely selected for the Duffy-negative mutation. All extant human P. vivax parasites are derived from a single ancestor that escaped out of Africa

Data protection: the challenges facing social networking

    No full text
The popularity of social networking sites has increased dramatically over the past decade. A recent report indicated that thirty-eight percent of online users have a social networking profile. Many of these social networking site users (SNS users) post or provide personal information over the internet every day. According to the latest OfCom study, the average adult SNS user has profiles on 1.6 sites and most check their profiles at least once every other day. However, the recent rise in social networking activity has opened the door to the misuse and abuse of personal information through identity theft, cyber stalking, and undesirable screenings by prospective employers. Behavioral advertising programs have also misused personal information available on social networking sites. Society is now facing an important question: what level of privacy should be expected and required within the social networking environment

    No full text
This paper discusses firstly, the  poetical space of celebrated American poet Adrienne Rich who died in March 2012, at the age of 82. The analysis focuses on Rich’s complex  figurations of female subjectivity as well as on her nuanced positions in relation to the public role of the poet today. Rich’s attention to the political dimension did not exclude intimate reflections on personal relationships and on their modalities. In this respect her poetry is close to another important lesbian author, the poet laureate Coral Ann Duffy. In The World’s Wife (1999), Carol Ann Duffy presents thirty sketches of famed men from both history and mythology by their wives. Each wife extols or criticizes her own husband in a combination of sarcasm and sentimentalism, with peaks of  extreme bitterness and self-pity. Such singular and irreverent feminine versions show a series of references to the animal world. As a matter of fact, Duffy creates a downright vast and varied bestiary, which focuses on the problematic association between the female and the animal body. The aim of this essay is to explore the multiple possibilities of representation and placement of the human body in the space, through the lenses of ecocriticism and posthumanism.

Carol Ann Duffy, a prestigious contemporary British poet and first ever female Poet Laureate, was never translated into Portuguese despite the status she has already acquired in British literature and her extensive bibliography. As a result, her work is not yet part of our literary system. Consequently, this dissertation can be considered a pioneering work as it introduces and studies selected segments of Carol Ann Duffy's collections. Furthermore, it also incorporates a critical analysis of the author, a description of the theoretical framework underlying the translation process, and a translation of selected poems. As far as the study of Carol Ann Duffy's poetic characteristics is concerned, emphasis is laid on her focus on gender and the different components that are the foundation of gender conventions. The author manipulates the notions of femininity and masculinity in her attempt to subvert these conventions and explores the concepts of sexual identity and language with which she occasionally associates the representation of social roles. The poet uses intertextuality as a mechanism for both revision and reinvention, adopting a critical approach when she raises these questions, along with others about the role of women, their experiences, as well as the revisitation of former love affairs. In the course of this attempt at translating Duffy's poems, emphasis is placed on the main characteristics of poetic translation and the problems that they pose. The translation of poetry, potentially even more than other types of translation, demands a higher level of creativity on the part of the translator both in solving problems and in finding new alternatives. In such cases, significantly, the negotiation between fidelity and the manipulation of the source text becomes an effective theoretical background. The dissertation also includes a reflection about the translator's competences and the processes applied to the practical cases found in the selected corpus
