Embora os lançamentos de atualização impliquem a oferta de produtos melhores, a exposição dos consumidores a upgrades os leva a sofrer um declínio hedônico mais acelerado para a versão do produto que possuemThis work investigates how the release of upgrades influences consumers’ well-being. Specifically, it explores how the exposure of consumers to upgrades determine their hedonic trajectory with products they currently own (i.e., the status quo). Across a sentiment analysis of tweets about iPhones, a survey with iPhone owners, and seven experiments employing a variety of stimuli, findings support the conclusion that consumers exposed to upgrades experience a faster hedonic decline with their status quo than those not exposed to upgrades. Results also provide moderation-based and mediation-based evidence that consumers’ hedonic decline accelerates because their locus of attention moves from the status quo to the upgrade. Taken together, these findings shed light on the potential harm of upgrade releases on consumers’ well-being. Although upgrade releases imply the offer of better products, the exposure of consumers to upgrades leads them to experience a faster hedonic decline for the product version they currently own

    Get PDF
Hedonic adaptation is the attenuation of affective reactions resulting from ongoing ownership and usage of a particular product (WANG; NOVEMSKY; DHAR, 2009). This phenomenon depends on the consumption repetition (REDDEN, 2008) and explains why individuals enjoy their products less over the time. Although the effects of repetitive consumption are known in the body of research about hedonic adaptation, the impact of consumer beliefs about usage repetition on hedonic adaptation prediction has not yet been investigated. Our research addresses this issue. Specifically, we test whether people predict less future enjoyment (faster adaption) with a product when the usage repetition is made salient. Based on literature about affective forecasting (WILSON et al., 2000), we propose that the focalism is the mechanism underlying the effect of salient usage repetition on the increased hedonic adaptation prediction. Aiming to understand this effect, we sought to provide evidence about two boundary conditions of the effect of usage repetition salience on hedonic adaptation prediction: assortment variety and how much the product draws attention. Moreover, we tested whether people prefer products that allow consumption variety when usage repetition is made salient. Our results show that participants are more likely to predict less future enjoyment when the usage repetition is salient, and they suggest that this effect occurs because of focalism. The assortment variety is a boundary condition of this effect, and the usage repetition salience explains why people prefer products that allow consumption variety. There is no evidence that how much the product draws attention affects the relationship between usage repetition salience and hedonic adaptation prediction

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Grounded on Status Consumption Theory (SCT) approach, this article analyzes how the consumption habits of children of high and low Brazilian social classes are constituted, it also criticizes the Global Trickle-down Model (GTDM) and analyzes the precision of the recent theoretical modifications suggested by Üstüner and Holt (2010) concerning the inadequacy of SCT to the developing countries. We carried on a theoretical-empirical research based on 36 in-depth interviews with children between 9 and 12 years old, of high or low classes. Based on a content analysis, we present and discuss the results through the following analytical categories: influence agents, relation with the universe of possibilities and impossibilities of each class, and social distinction. To conclude, we compare the TCS concepts with the results found in the context of high and low Brazilian classes and evaluate the adequacy of GTDM to this context. The research’s main finding are that peers have greater influence on the habits of children of higher classes; the media has a different impact depending of the child socioeconomic position; and, against previous theory, consumer desires of lower class children are not prisoned by their existence conditions

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
